 ok what do you think is the best game you've ever played and why?
for me it's prbably the elite series of space sim games - good story / good game play / and total freedom (sound familar ?) was around in the eighties and is possibly a precurser to games such as freelancer. Flip side of the cion would have to be civilisation 1/2/3 as far as turn based stratergy , of course you could add railway tycoon but civ for me just edges it out anyway would be interested on your thoughts about which game(s) wherre are your all time favs :bounce:
forgot to add fps morrowind/bloodmoon/tribunal great visuals storyline gameply also an open ended game which allows you to go off on your own and explore or follow either the main quest or multiply other side quests. :bigglasse
-
Transport Tycoon, one of the first games I ever played, and I still play it sometimes. The first C&C was great, but the number 1 game of all time, has to be none other then...
Duke Nukem 3D
"I'm going to rip off your head and shit down your neck."
-
Chess
-
Doom. In fact...I might go play Doom MP now. Bye.
-
Morrowind
It's a game so open that I still haven't finished with it :)
When I first started playing, it was so pretty that I walked to the end of the pier in Seyda Neen and watched the rain on the water :) Later on that day I watched the clouds pass across the two moons moving through the sky.
I love it. It's like a home away from home... with diseased demons LOL :D
Netherai.

pfft, the corprus disease is no match for me!

COMMANDER KEEN!!!1111!!ONEONE
duke nukem 3d comes a close second
-
(1) Half-life. at the time there was nothing like it on the market... it rocked.
(2)I also like painkiller because of its awesome sets and bring-it-on enemies.
(3)unreal because of its colorful levels.
i know thats 3 but i still play all of them regularly.
-
Duke Nukem 3D
That game was fun! :) If I looked at it now though, I might just keel over at the graphics..
Placing pipe bombs all over the map and detonating them all at the same time :bigglasse

Transport tycoon ELITE,
TTD was a joke.
best game now BF2 :rnr:
-
Transport tycoon ELITE,
Whats that?
-
elite - the mother of all space exploration /trade and ship to ship battle games. elite 2 unfortunately slightly buggy and well decidedly average / elite 3 - more bugs / less development.
privateer - what elite was headed to. nicer graphics great plot /quests. trading was dumped.
freelancer the multiplayer. never played it. lost interest in the genre.
RPG
baldurs gate - fantastic left ultima series reeling. played the entire series. morrowind was just more of the same?
RTS
star craft C&C / red alert / RA2 / C&C generals.
FPS
doom / halflife / BF2
first two 'shame about the sequels' halflife 2 was disappointingly short and apart from geewhiz graphics (like doom3) had no real interesting new stuff.
Course theres a thousand games i loved to play over the years (super cars 2 - AMIGA / Last Ninja series - AMIGA / Bruce Lee -c64 / International karate / way of the exploding fist / barbarian - c64 & amiga) and lots i can't remember the names of there was a awesome side scrolling shooter for c64, silkworm on teh Amiga was pretty good. Metal Gear solid - PS / Soul Blade - dreamcast.
BF2 is simply the most advanced, but i am pretty sure a mod for BF2 engine will become more popular & fun than bf2 soon enough. FEAR seems to be getting some good reviews too.
-
Quake and Grand Theft Auto
Classic's!
-
omg, GTA, that was awesome!!!!
-
RTCWMP
-
There was a game called Elite - going back many many years. It was sort of a pre-runner to Freelancer, and it was awesome. I think that would be one of the best.
In FPS terms you can't go past the likes of Quake and Doom, and obviously CS is the most popular online game ever....BF2 is pretty shit hot as well.
-
Best RPG
Baldurs Gate 2, Throne of Bhaal - awesome story, great ending to the series. One of the highlights of my gaming career was when i finally got an audience with the dark elf high priestess and instead of doing her bidding my 33lvl monk walked up to her and quivering palmed her - killing her outright. (and no, quivering palm is nothing sexual). You really need to play all the other BG's to get the full appreciation of this game.
:edit:
And yeah I fully agree, Elite was the best game on it's platform. And Last Ninja was a close second. The sound track to that game was awesome.
-
lol ape, i can't remember how i finished BG2, i remember i was a sorcerer and had a shitload of death magic.
-
pizza tycoon
railroad tycoon
simcity original
simearth
civilisation 1
colonization
xcom: ufo enemy unknown
xcom: terror from the deep
street rods
master of orion
master of magic
cant remember anymore, but there plenty of other classics than simply own todays games
-
moon cresta
castle wolf (the original)
defender
quix
choplifter
Streetfight 2
SimCity 2, was much better then 1
Freelancer
-
mercenary
star glider 2
actually i remember playing a game (damned if i can remember its name it was on the Amiga 500) it was 3d and you were a single player versus the enemy who controlled everything basically you were behind enemy lines, there were jeeps / tanks/ helicopters / boats / windsurfers! & men, your weapons were a gun & grenades (and the vehicles) it was all green for land blue for water. there were sharks in the water and missiles, always watching fuel levels and you got linear 'missions' goto A destroy the antenna and return. etc. I can't beleive i totally forgot this game existed and it annoys the hell out of me that i can't think of its name. its like the original battlefield but not multiplayer, and oddly enough had more vehicles / stuff. it was about the time carrier command was out.
-
Enjoyed Transport tycoon.
As a kid used to like Death Track (dunno just something about blowing things up while in a car race)
-
Deus Ex, easily. Hands down, most fun I've had in the first person enviroment. When it comes to being addicted to a game, it would have to be either KotOR or KotOR2, both of which ended up in all nighters for a single player game.
-

I remember that too, not the name though. Was a great game.
Elite on the amstrad was great as well, tough to dock though!
-
was it a vector based game? you know - with filled polygons?
-
STAR CONTROL 2 - the best role playing games of its time in my opinion, and still is.
kknd - was alright, good C&C clone for its time, spent many house on its amazingly impossible missions,
all of the sim series was rather good, SIMANT gave me some good memories.
sid meires - PIRATES, was a classic too, the newest version that just came out recently is a total revamp of the classic, its a bit unfortunate that it gets a bit repetitive/...
-
STUNTS
the best car game EVER!!!!!!!
-
best game ever is.............let me think........for me probably resident evil one
i have good memories from my first time playing that game. my brother had hired it out with a bunch of his friends and they were all too scared to play it so i had to play and i was way younger than them
tetris is probably one of the best games ever tho, because its timeless
-
all of the sim series was rather good, SIMANT gave me some good memories.
OMG, I remember simant... poor little spider! I loved the speech balloons with the spider deciding which ants he thought were most tasty, then not liking ants at all when he was overwhelmed LOL.

 am curious - is deus ex like system shock 2 game wise had heard it was and was wondering if this was so as sys shock is a cool fps and can get dues ex at local store really cheap - worth it?
-
was it a vector based game? you know - with filled polygons?
yes filled polygons, rather slow from memory.
-
HUNTER, and while i searched to find its title -many many more sprang back. makes every game i play today feel all dirty and just a rehash.
-
notice we are not mentioning any new titles? simply old games that were made back in the days of originality and virtual success.
those were the days eh?
-
Nothing beats the originals, Sonic (Any of the Sega Master Systems or Mega Drives) and Crash Bandicoot was the real first 3d version of it...
DoW disappointed me to be honest but deserves a mention because it's 40K... Starcraft is best Strategy game... Still play it, gotta find the CD though...
GTA 2, was my favourite of the series...
Worms is a good one... Duke 3D I loved for the Pipe Bombs, why hasn't anyone kept that in FPS? Half Life 2 Deathmatch with Pipebombs... Oh god... I wish I could mod HL2...
Half Life is good, and it's little add ons...
Transport Tycoon had me going for hours... I'd just buy all the companies out instead of waiting for them to go Bankrupt...
Mech 3 was the best of that series two, MW4's slot system sh*ts me off!
That'll do for now...
-
:rnr: got to admit mechs rock - by the reason alot of us are mentioning older games is because alot of the newer ones are simply clones of the older ones
-
Transport Tycoon had me going for hours... I'd just buy all the companies out instead of waiting for them to go Bankrupt...
But when you bought them out you ended up with the most messed up train networks, the AI was so bad in that game, lol
-
Americas Army 2.4
Battlefield 2
Painkiller
Halflife 2
and i hate KAL!!!
-
whats KAL?
-
 am curious - is deus ex like system shock 2 game wise had heard it was and was wondering if this was so as sys shock is a cool fps and can get dues ex at local store really cheap - worth it?
system shock was ok as a FPS. it was a tension / scary thriller. you were ALWAYS low on ammo, the only time you have lots is when theres 30 things to kill around the next corner.
Deus Ex had a large range of weapons / modifications and your character coul be developed to be exceptional at whatever you thought was important (at some point of the game you'd regret it).
Deus Ex was a great game in its time, and its still playable but it looks quite dated.
-
:rnr: got to admit mechs rock - by the reason alot of us are mentioning older games is because alot of the newer ones are simply clones of the older ones
thank you MS office assistant
-
whats KAL?
KalOnline (http://www.kalonline.com)
Korean free MMORPG
-
I'll have a look at this, a lot of people seem to play it...
-
any of you guys ever played Realmz? was an awesome little RPG, id almost say the best!
id have to say the game ive got the most fun from is definately CS!
-
thank you MS office assistant
;) well i am a public servant so stating the obvious comes naturally. :D
black heart - thanx for info on the game :bigglasse

Guild Wars

Half life 2
HL2 wtf ren YOU TRADER
-
traitor?
you gotta love some of the ICONZ crew sometimes.
-
he means renesis is into the merchandising busness
-
maybe he traded AA for HL2?
-
Chess
I agree, 1400 years and still going strong :)
-
Some favs:
Civilization 1, 2. Played the original to death as a kid.
Colonization. Hell, most Sid Meier games were classics. Still are! Pirates etc. Looking forward to Civ 4 this year!
Deus Ex. Damn awesome game. Sure it looks a bit dated graphically as it is about 5 years old... but the gameplay is phenominal!
Half-Life 1 & 2
Theres so many good games... Rome Total War has become a fav too.
-
williams/midways defender
why because its got a certain magic to it, its one of these few early games that you really can get a feel for(in the zone kind of experience)
it imo was a ground breaker in that it reqired so many buttons but once you interfaced well with them it added to the experience.
-
As reported in major magazines, the best video game ever in history is: MARIO (super). And in second place is Pac Man... With a world that's obsessed with the most highly advanced games on the market, they have a long way to compare with the greats of old. :rnr: :rnr:
-
..
they used to rock in a 26" upright cabinet with stereo speakers
they must base that on sales or something mario was neither revolutionary (platform games are one of the oldest genres) and it didn't bring anything new to its genre either.
2 titles straight off the top of my head that are far superior, but of the same genre
ghosts and goblins (arcade & c64 & amiga?)
impossible mission (c64)
-
hey Cowie, what time did you play till last night? musta been late?
-
I think the original age of empires was a great game, way ahead of its time.... im also a fan of command and conquer generals - zero hour.... hours and hours of fun, a new game which i think is f****ng awesome is Prince of persia warrior within, brilliant graphics, and so fun to play... and of course the cs's are all great :)
-
ah age of empires 1, i remember getting that when it first came out. awesome originality
at least until i discovered warhammer (or was it warcraft) was the first map game. But it was still awesome getting a lan game going on it, i was fricken good at it too.
One game i think was made before its time is Descent. a 3D 360 made long before wingcommander. your flight was limited tho but its physics were very good for a game made in the 2D era
-
Yeah i remember descent it was pretty cool.... but compare warcraft to aoe... and its no contest graphics and gameplay wise, even warcraft 2, in my opinion has nothing on age of empires, i used to play aoe hardout back in the day of 56k before good online fps
-
*stricken by more memories of the sumerian empire winning countless victories* those were the days
-
hey Cowie, what time did you play till last night? musta been late?
yeah i have a little bf2 addiction problem at the moment, im slowly cutting down my hours, so i dont suffer withdrawal symptoms(i think ive got a handle on it now)
besides summers comming up can't waste that.
-
for me-ps2-final fantasy series best game, but sonic, ceash always good for a blast.
-
Jagged alliance and later versions. Slower than everything out now, still just as addictive now as then. Recommend it to anyone into startegy and tactics.
-

i hated that game! it would tell you youhave a 90% chance to hit then miss 4 out of 4 shots, and they would kill your character! AAARRRRGH just thinking about it ARRRGH.
-

You were probably hiring cheapo mercs who used to work at the post office! What's that guys name again...
That game was great fun at the time! Probably a bit zzz now though. Love firing mortars around :D
An impossible game to play is Fallout! That's ARGH! I heard it's a classic and all, so I tried it out, didn't get very far :(
-
haha yea fallout, JA2 all the same engine / issues. my mercs were the most expensive peasants with the sharpest sticks & stones money could buy!
they all pale in comparison to laser squad.
-

I would have previously said css was the best game ever but after buying world of warcraft last week i would now have to say that wow is definitely the best game I've ever played although css can't be beaten when you're playing with your mates.
My nights now consist of 5hrs WOW and 1hr CSS = =
-
id have to agree that ELITE is the best game ever, for those who aint played it im sure if you search hard enough you can get emulators and the game,
Duke 3d. Everquest. Commander Keen series.
some that others may not have played.
MonteZuma's Revenge - old atari game. brilliant also available on atari emulators if you wanna look hard enough. when i played it, had to load it from a tape drive. hehe. but when it was loaded was great fun.
-
my old 386 has commander keen 1 to 5. i bet everyone has encountered at least one version in their life
-
If I am right I own Commander Keen 1 through 5, and Commander Keen 8 (However this one was no longer numbered)
-
ah how many are there. i only know about 1-6 which i have on my comp. although they maybe the freeware/shareware versions, demos in other words. would like to get hold of full versions if they are not. hehe. brilliant though. get bored, play paddle wars on the watch/menu.
-
486 Style - ROTT (Rise of the Triad) FPS
There was one guy you could only kill with a pistol, i remember hiding somewhere that he couldnt hit me and sitting some coins on the shoot key so i could go and eat.
Sonic (I bought a ps2 version, same graphics and shit just with like .. 5 sonic originals on it)
FF 1 - X2 I have every game in the serious except 3. Tactics doesnt count.
Tetris, Chess, Pong, Frogger
Landstalker - Master system RPG with over 200 hours gameplay.
River Raid - Atari game, navigate your plane around brown blocks for as long as possible.
Loderunner - C64, You control a little man who has to outrun three bad guys, picking up 'treasure' before the escape ladder showed at the top of the level. (Im sure the original mario was much the same i.e a hack up of loderunner.) There we're 200 levels, varying in difficulty and design (Some weird ones made into words and other things like that)
After completion of the 200 levels you'd be back at the starting level but the bad guys would move twice as fast.
CS:S of course, it's all i really play now. Sometimes when i get bored of dying i play some MSN solitaire.
- DDM
-
i rem as a kid watching my dad play civilization one, it was awesome when he finally let me have a go, that game has since stuck in my head...That and starwars tie fighter or xwing or something...cept i lost the manual and to play it u had to enter a code ><
-
is this only for computer :S Suikoden 1-3, still playing 3rd on ps2
-

pfft lode runner. how about impossible mission? WIth synthesized speech?
-
I had Impossible Mission as well.. that game really was impossible =\ It frustrated the crap out of me.
-
If I am right I own Commander Keen 1 through 5, and Commander Keen 8 (However this one was no longer numbered)
there is an 8! holy shit.
I thought they stopped production at 6. That was when other game designers wanted to get involved with keens popularity. Eg: theres a keen 13, (random number) made by gamers edge, not apogee. Still a product ID software however.
I remember rise of the triad also, that game had a sence of humor :D . I think i still have the demo.
-
ROTT, dog mode.. so cool
-
Hmm
real ol skool
double dragon
Street fighter 2
that orange/red racing car game that drove around shooting smoke out of its bum.
oh FF series and resident evil..soo scary! :D :D
-
hehe yeah. ROTT played that. was kinda fun. a bit different though from the main stream FPS games of the day. the way the maps were set out and what not.
-
when i first played ROTT the sound gaurds made when being shot by the MP40 made me piss myself laughing.
-
there was another FPS like ROTT shadow warrior? which was funny as shit
"sticky bomb like you!" Throwing a 'sticky bomb' on an enemy
"Pooo, did a baboon die in here?" opening a door to a toilet.
Had naked girlies aswell, and was a hoot in multiplayer with a odd variety of weapons.
-
AAO 2.0.a, the game that got me away from PS2/X-box and in to on-line...even with 56k and 64M intel graphics, once I was hooked.....well....'nuff said?
As far as console games go, I was a great fan of the GT series...always loathed NFS and RR
Had a diablo2 addiction for a while, but thankfully it went away :)
Thanks to ICONZ, AAO just got a whole lot sweeter, makes me shelling out $$ for BF2 even more unlikely......until it gets down to $29.95 :D
-
For me Tie Fighter and Diablo would be definately be on my fav list. Hell if you see the condition of my Diablo CD its a testament to how awesome it was. :D
-
bubble bubbles..
mortal combat on sega? can't remember what game console.
-
Best game ever by era/machine i've had.
Spectrum: Leaderboard Golf, Gauntlet is a close second, let down by the near 60 minutes it took to load off of tape.
Amiga: Sensible Soccer, ET Rugby League, the Pinball Game
386: Links without a doubt
486: Tie Fighter (or X-Wing) cant remember which
Must have partied too hard in the years between the 486 and P4 as the rest escapes me.
P4: RTCW Multiplayer, followed by ET (Enemy Territory). All of the people that play CS and BF1/2 that have not tried these games are really doing a disservice to themselves, I've played *all* of them and these two are by far the best . YOu won't find any local RTCW servers anymore (I don't think) but you will find heaps of ET action. And the best bit is that ET is free!!!!!!!! Search for it in our downloads section... and don't be an idiot, just because it is free it is not crap! It was intended as a full price release but due to the company making the single player part of it not coming to the party in time they scrapped the whole project and released the multi player part which was finished, for free!!!!!!!
I honestly cannot believe the amount of people who have not tried ET that are FPS MP fans..shame on you all.
-
:D flock temp started om amiga type systems then moved to p1 what happened - r u really that old u can't remember?
-
Only two titles compete for best game ever created:
Nethack - 1987 to now. Best game ever created
Space Empires III - Only game I played for 1 whole day 7am - 7am. Still remember the epic 4 hour battle in the Vorlon system and the genocide of Beta Cygni III
-
Game that sucked up the most of my life for an extened period would have been Motocross Madness 2, with the many many tracks released each week and constant online tournaments I was a busy man.
Mrs Metla nearly divorced me 3000 times during that period.
Recently it would have been F1 Challenge with all its mods, carsets and tracks.
Currently its rFactor, that game should have a few years in it.
Stunt Car Racer on the Amiga sticks out like a set of canine nads.
Amazed that Impossible Mission has already been mentioned, Both 1 and 2 were shit hot, 2 being the better game though. Can't remember if I had them on the C64 or the Amiga....
-
sorry if any of u disagree, but half life, always was, always will be
-
SOF2 is the best game. I played more games then the rest of you have had hot dinners and i always comeback. BF2 almost had me.. but then i realised how shit it was. Halflife is an absolute joke.. gameplay sucks. SOF2 For ever!
Oh and KiLL3r is a cocksmoker.
-
Oh and i just read the Lack of Sof2 servers in NZ thread that is now closed. The new posters are just alot of sof players that are about to lose their only sof server in NZ. We are asking ICONZ if they can do this for us as we know they are a great multiplayer gaming provider. Killa if you read this your jsut a noob with the most unoriginal name ever go suck buttcake wanker.
-

righteo then :laff: sof2 sucks compared to bf2 hahahhahhahaha
-
I can see something brewing here
If Chook responds with a flame Im gong to slap you both
I like this thread
sorry if any of u disagree, but half life, always was, always will be
I don't know about the best
but HL was a revolutionary game, it changed the way people though about what a FPS had to be
Quake 1 was another revolution
To a lesser extent the original BF and Halo were to

-
Gloden Axe for the amiga was and still is the undefeated champion of games
-
haha golden axe rules
the whole series was great
Im also partial to loadrunner
-
Diablo 2 owns all :D (at least until i played it far far far too much and got bored)
Bring on diablo 3!
Oh and CSS aint too bad either...
-
Crystal Caves and Prince of Persia :D
-
HL2, no doubt.
-
So whats the summary of all the games voted to be the best? We need a tally to find out what game just got nominated the most.
-
yeah a list from all the replys to this thread. although u can tell who are new gamers and who are old gamers.
especially when they say things like CSS, Halflife, Diablo2 and other recent games are the best lol.
there are a lot of games that far surpass them. although everyone has thier opinions. but older games are far superior as they had better story lines and imersion.
-
but older games are far superior as they had better story lines and imersion.
Like pacman
You can't say old games were better or new games are better
It's just not true
there were some great games back in the day, and there were some absolute rubbish ones to
and the same holds true today
I'll admit it seems to take a few hundred thousand more than it used to to make a shit game
-
well lotsa classics here. ... good to see theres still alot of good taste out there
i would say ..
FPS:
Doom2 (double barrel action is essential), Quake (NIN sounds pwned), SOF2 (awesome game for its time and really set the bar for real world mp fps)
RPG:
BG2 (wicked storyline), Betrayal at krondor (omg this game was the best! Gorath and owen were the A team! LOL), Realms of arkania (also another indepth rpg that had a really good turn based combat engine)
RTS:
starcraft and age of empires 2 conqs expansion were the best multiplayer RTS's ever!
did any1 ever play Theme hospital? .. hehe i luved that game
also i reckon MDK was pretty impressive for its time..
aaahhh good times
-
MDK was great, sniper bullet cam awesome
Has anyone mentioned Fallout 2 yet?
-
MDK was great, sniper bullet cam awesome

wwwooooooooooo (slaps self)
um whats MDK
-
speedball on the amiga
battlefield 1942 on the pc
madden on the playstation
-
you could say that a new game is best, but you wouldn't be judging the games very fairly, some old games are damn awesome for how long ago they were made.
everytime i play dr mario i get soooooooooo hooked, i sit there for hours killing those lil buggies, its my one weakness eheheheh
plus heaps of old games have good memories for me
-
beachhead 2 c64. multiplayer, and a series of minigames.. was awesome fun.
-
:bigglasse SOF2 is and aways will be the best game ever for me. i don't play it as much, but i will probably never stop playing it. SOF2 4 eva :bounce:
-
I played the 1st SOF.. reviews were pretty mixed for SOF2, not a lot more too it? I really can't see how a FPS could ever be the best game ever... its too limited in scope.
-
That Savage game was pretty cool... RTSRPG
-
its the sentimental value that gets old games points in the BEST GAME awards.
They may be outdated by 60372 sentences in its system code, but they spanwed first ideas and concepts. They are responsible for the quality of new games we have today. Old gamers owe their respects.
There could be other reasons why we cling to old games.
perhaps we should judge the best game by era:
mid 1980's: Commander keen 1
1990's: Duke nukem 3D
mid 1990's: half life
the Zero's: Freelancer
Mid 2000: Halo 2
-
Freelancer is a bloody good game.
Besides, although i agree doom is an excellent game it wasn't the first FPS.
Wolfenstein kick started that.
-

not another crying sof2 n00b, tell me have u gotten ur server yet
-
i remember playing commander keen and after playing amiga games it was a step backwards.
-
FF7 owns all. period and MGS...
No storyline or gameplay can come close, those two games alone have more single player reply than anything on the PC.....except their PC versions :chuckle:
-
PONG!
You know the one with the two paddles and the square that bounced from side to side :)
-
yeah doing game by era is a better way of seeing what games where best.
commander keen series was brilliant. um final fastasy series. all of them not just the ones everyone knows. ff1,2,3... and there was another one that had no number, used to play that on a nes or snes emulator. pretty much the same as the new ones, turn based combat. main diff was graphics.
-
Yeah i still have em all on emulator:) even with crappy sprites they still pAWn
-
http://www.dosgamesarchive.com
-
i passsionately hate turn based combat style in FF series. theres more entertainment removing all your pubes with a crowbar.
-
Blackhearts got a point.. nothing matched the Amiga for a long time afterwards. Go Super Cars 2!, oh and Toki.. and North and South.. and mouse trap.. And Giana Sisters!
-
theres more entertainment removing all your pubes with a crowbar.
You do this to!?!
Does anyone remember megarace?
"Hi, Im Lance Boil"
"You've won a fabulous evening out with yourself!!"
-
Its amazing how black heart earns credit by disagreeing with everybody.

I disagree yokel.
-
anyone mentioned dune yet ? :rnr:
wasn't it the precurser to all the rts type games ?
-
I disagree yokel.
hehe i thought you might say that.
-
anyone mentioned dune yet ? :rnr:
wasn't it the precurser to all the rts type games ?
no way, warlords etc were around before that. mighty awesome rts tho.
RPG: baldurs gate 2 for SP, NWN for MP
FPS: maybe doom2 for SP, Return to castle wolfenstein for MP (Enemy Territory not far behind)
RTS/FPS: Savage & NS
RTS: Red Alert 1
MMO: maybe EQ2? seemed to like it more than WoW....
-
RTS
Command and Conquer the original, then the original red alert, also C&C Retialiation for PS1 awsome fun playing linked till the they overheated after 4 hours.
FPS
BF1942 modded to DC.
Shadow Warrior this game was awsome.
Original UT <- How could people not mention this?????
Original Quake, 16 player multigames at highschool, oh the fun.
Racing
Toca Touring cars 1 & 2
Need for Speed < the original old ones that actually involve police.
Morrowinds not bad, just to plain for me.
Also Et's ok but slightly boring after a while.
The reason we dont see games like this now, is the cost of producing games, its in the millions and so the companys arent prepared to take such a huge risk, which is why we are seeing a lot of sequels at the moment.
But we are seeing some changes, eg EA's new NFS Most Wanted has finally got police back in it and looks like its going to be an awsome game.
-
UT and its sequels are awesome games but its background isnt well put together. Its made to be the best MP game rather than the best SP game, thats probably why noone has mentioned it.
-
anyone mentioned dune yet ? :rnr:
wasn't it the precurser to all the rts type games ?
Man that game was *so* old. I remember playing it when it first came out. It was *awesome*. Then I played it again in 1995 and its controls were clunky, it was slow and it just wasnt user friendly. Considering the amount of time and effort I put into finishing that game too!
I think it was the precurser. There were a few other games that contained real-time strategy ELEMENTS, but none contained the construction/control system that has now become the standard point and click RTS format

Ornithopters were never a problem for me since I played Atreides. Death Hands were the killers, but....man House Ordos sucked. If you havent tried Dune 2000, give it a go. Brings back memories without the clunky controls
Oh and for anyone who doesnt know, clunky controls are this: No multiple unit selection, no shortcut keys, no keyboard controls at all, an idiot AI and a limited number of TOTAL units. That is if all three houses + Imperial army was playing and there was an 100 unit limit AND the computer has 80 units including buildings, you couldnt build

hmm so dune was first RTS? but by this description i doubt anyone would call it 'best'

it was a 'benchmark' game - others improved on it - alot of current rts's 'learnt' from the mistakes of those that preceeded them :sunnies:

Hahaha I used to love Golden Axe, Crazy Sue 2 on the Amiga was another one of my early favourites :D
My favourite game of all time has to be FF7 :bounce:
-
UFO- enemy unknown. TFTD was just a rehash. a welcome rehash tho.
Morrowind. Rocks out.
Q3A- the first reason to want to be in a clan.
have been mentioned. lol.
-
ive played Dune2 in the last 12 months....abandonwarez are cool.
golden axe was the shit but what really got me hooked on computers would have been Commadore64 games Commando, Montizumas Revenge or Gauntlet.
The Kings Quest and Space Quest serious was also good....ooooo and Police Quest was wiked
Best fps ever Action Quake 2, i miss the hell out of that and hated CS for stealing players. First lan i went to was because of Aq2.
-

dbz tenkaichi
theres heaps more but i cant think at the moment
-
Theres too many opinions on the best game, i dont think there is one.
you may as well pick a variety.
I think half life got the most votes however, but i could be wrong. Counting these nominations is like counting the stars
-
Theres too many opinions on the best game, i dont think there is one.
You're missing the point
It's not to find the best game there is no such thing, find me the pefect snowflake
The point it to discuss great games and what made them great
-
Storyline and character attachment, games that make you forget that you actually sitting in front of a PC are the best
-
arnt all snowflakes perfect untill the hit something, all of them are different, which is some type of perfection in itself. there is a best game ever, we just needa find it lol. and yeah ones that make you forget you are at your computer. tis what is called imersion. you are so imerssed in the game that you dont notice anyting outside the boundries of your monitor
-

the best game is the sims2, and then CS:S, cos those are the only 2 games iv ever played.

Sims LOL, i only played that game once for like 5 mins not my kinda game :D Go live your own life people...CS:S is good though.
Another awesome game was Prince of Persia: Sands of time. Cool action, cool puzzles and funny :D Warrior within is probably cool aswell but ive been too lazy to play even if i do own a copy.
-
You're missing the point

the title of the thread is a bit misleading. but it would be nice to know anyway which game has the most fans;). it still wont insist that there is a "best" game since all games have enemies too.
PS: one of my friends is a control freak because of Sims.
-
oh crap i cant beleive i for got to mention metal gear solid in my fav games
the metal gear solid series is fukin awesome :rnr:
any body agree?
-
the best game is the sims2, and then CS:S, cos those are the only 2 games iv ever played.
they > u
sims... hmm definately a genre to its own. 1 person who was addicted to it, actually had a bit of a reality check, they realised to make his sim a successful and happy person he worked hard and looked after his health, etc etc. he noticed he didn't allot 10 'sim hours' a day playing games and that as far as real world life goes that pretty much how his own life was going, and consisted of. the shock of realising this conclusion made him stop playing the sims, and focus on his life as he had previously focussed on the sims. so its actually (in this case) a rather good affect on people, of course i myself had no such moment of clarity, as i simply deleted the most boring game i have ever played since 'little computer people', on the c64.
to each their own i guess.
-

Little Computer People! :)
Eliot, his back-scratchy chair, his deliveries to his house, his little letters he wrote :D Totally forgot about that game.
-
until that affect happens. Some people tend to get so involved in sim lifestyle that they begin to control other people around them like they do to the sims.
Unless the 2 people im talking about just have a commanding personality.
-
The Sims?
Damn, Games without guns just suck.
Unless they have V8's.
-
Streetfighter 2 Hyper Fighting

FUK YEah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think i have to say that Homeworld 1 is the greatest game ever, the music and just the whole game, its been the only single player RTS game that i can be bothered actually playing through.
-
oh crap i cant beleive i for got to mention metal gear solid in my fav games
the metal gear solid series is fukin awesome :rnr:
any body agree?
roger that :rnr:
-
roger that :rnr:
cool i knew there were some fans out there
-
RTCW
the first game i shat my pants in.
-
Also,
I think HL2 made a fair bi of head way in terms of AI, closely followed by FEAR. I cant walk around in my house at night without thinking that alma is behind me or around the corner.
-
To me AOE 1 is the king of RTS. I never get tired of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory. I also loved freelancer but only ever clocked it once and never played it online.
-
Freelancer was an awesome game online, the best part was that its made for modding.
Almost all tactical data was comprised of easily edited ini files; factions, systems, ships. Everything could be changed. I have created my own weapons, bases etc for that game.
i was one of the first players to join ICONZ FL server, ahh those were good times.
-
How could anyone forget Diablo 1 and 2?
Great gameplay, awsome storyline and an infinite amount of items to collect and sometims even modify.
-
The Worms series will have to be my favourtie, simple, yet extremley satisfying.
CS:S and all the others follow closly
-
Go Home Stay home, good old primary school classic back in the old old old old days.
Virtual Jenna :rnr:
-
go home stay home! used to love that game. it was the first in the series of sneaking around like a spec op in my old school days,.
what about half life death match, or just original half life, does anyone still play that anymore? or am i the only one, its my fav of all time, was the first fps i played ever, and i still play it and own most maps i play in the aussie server list, cause nz only has one, and it had bots on it,
but so fast and simple., gives a rest from all the hard out games these days, good to get back to low tech,
and besides that, computers that were made 12 years ago, wil;l still play it fine!
-
i just started playing tiberium sun again....and i see EA is releasing all the Command and conquer games in one pack for 80 bucks
thats all the full games AND the expansions
-
For action which is based on TOTAL skill, INTENSE fun and EXTREME BRAGGING RIGHTS for the winner:
Street Fighter 2: Turbo
Ken vs Ryu, ultimate showdown EVER (although my money is on Ken, especially becuase im always Ken :S )
Best game just for design and simplicity, probably chess or Reversi (Or Othello, as my version of the boardgame is called)
Best PC game... I dunno. Freelancer, for multiplayer. I owe a tiny, TINY part of my life to Freelancer. Yes it really was that fun and involving.
-
Redline Gang Warefare 2006 it's a quake 3 arena daytona usa cross lotsa fun. ;)
-
Get offa mah land!

I've read some very dodgy reviews about this. Bugs causing problems. Apparently all the games run ok on XP, but the Soviet FMV's do not play between missions on Red Alert and the internet multiplayer doesn't work.
Just do what I did, buy multiple copies. ATM I have three copies of RA1. So good.
-
command and conquer for sure , i concur ghost.
-
My favourite game of all time has to be FF7
^^ im gna have to go with slapper on that one aye, i freakin loved ff7, played it for a gud couple of hundred hours and was choked when aires died :sad2: The rest of the FF series rocked also!
-

yeah you're right...all and all a very poorly put together pack (try this; you have to enter all 12 CD keys!)
but the is a work a round for online play of the early games...i'll see if i can dig it up

nope....when i bought tiberium sun the ex pack was discontinued

What gets me is the fact that they're NOT releasing one of the C&C games. the did an "online" game called Sole Survivor, based on the original C&C, and I've been wanting to play it for ages. But they didn't bundle it, probably because it didn't sell well. Fucking EA! I WANT WESTWOOD BACK!
-

soul survivor was terrible...it wasn't so much that it didn't sell well....it's that it was HATED by the community
any way....as far as the first decade pack goes...i found the forum on this site;
http://www.planetcnc.com/
to be really helpful, telling me what bugs there were and work a rounds for them.
i have held off on buying the pack because of it
-
one unhappy gamer
One thing I want to friendly remind EA is that I paid good money for a 'good' game. Whether or not you perceive this package to be 'good value' is irrelevant. You have created a product and are selling it a price you want to sell it for. If people buy it, they should get what is being advertised. Saying that it is 'good value' is not an excuse for selling a faulty or defective product. A product is not good value if it is broken.
Your argument that it is 'good value' is flawed anyway. The only game in the package which may be providing a significant income still is Generals. In reality, nobody is buying the old games anymore. They either already have them (C&C fans) or don't want them because they are so old (standard gamers). Look at old versions of other games, Grand Theft Auto for example. You can now download the original games for free.
To create this package, you haven't had to produce any new gaming content. You have simply had to compile and make compatible a compilation of existing games. All the time creating the package should have therefore been concentrated on getting this right. In my opinion, the number and seriousness of the bugs is above average for a debut game. This is a second release of existing games.
In reality, the price we have paid is the price of convenience. Through eBay, you can get most of these games for the same total price as paid for this compilation. I admit it is nice to have them all on one disc in one collection. However, why didn't EA take the time to get this right? Why can't EA accept they have made a mistake?
Please don't take this personally Apoc. Customer support and the developers have to take the flack for decisions made by the EA bosses. Apoc is just doing his job trying to console the disgruntled customers. However, I think there are things to be learnt from this.
Look at the Battlefield department of EA. I am a great fan of the Battlefield series and have played every game since release. There is no denying that bugs have been an issue with battlefield. However, the Battlefield team work hard to release patches that they are comfortable have fixed the issues. They also keep the community informed. Look at the Battlefield 2 website. There are frequent community updates letting people know what problems there are, what is being done about them and expected release dates. Now take a look at the C&C website. The news releases go from The First Decade being released, to a post on how to play the original C&C and RA online. Ok, so where is the update telling me there is a problem in the first place? Where is the update telling me what is being done about it? Where is the update telling me a patch is being worked on and what is being addressed? I find myself looking around fan forums for the latest inside information. Why aren't official updates posted for everyone to see to keep everyone updated? It is not half as bad there being problems if you know what is being done about them.
Anyway, I think I have said more than enough for now. EA, please release a patch to sort all of the problems and make this one of the best game compilations ever. Also, please keep the community updated regularly with your progress. If you can do these two things, I'm sure it would make a lot of people happy, including me.
-

Perhaps, but I have never had a chance to play, or hate, it. And I want that chance. If you're going to round up a series, release a "First Decade" pack, then why NOT put in Sole Survivor.
I'm sure most gamers would be pissed if a Doom collectors ed pack was released and The Ultimate Doom was missed, or one of the other official expansions/spin offs. And before anybody opens their yap, I know that a doom collectors pack has been released, and I know it included The Ultimate Doom. So shut your traps already.
-
nope....when i bought tiberium sun the ex pack was discontinued
i got it... its pretty good pm if you would like more details etc .....

on the other hand star craft is almost as old but is still played... who has played dune in the last 12 months?
I played Dune last year to celebrate its 20th Anniversary!
It took about eight hours, but I finished again. First time in.....10 years.
Also: The game Moonbase (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonbase_(video_game)) from 1990, aka "SimCity on the Moon", Planted its base on the Moon in 2013
I wonder what those 90's folk would do if they knew how the future turned out.

Dune 2, that was the shit. Made me fall in love with RTS.
-
Used to love dune 2, atreides all the way, their freemen were/are the worst special attack but the sonic tanks are the best top tiered tank.
First comment in this thread but I personally think Super Mario Bros should be sitting near the top if we're talking console games as well, but if purely PC, then for the games that first captured me for their genre and runners up:
FPS: Duke nukem 3D, Doom
Strategy: Civilization 1, Nuclear War
RTS: Dune 2, C&C
RPG: TES Arena, Might and Magic 3-X, The Bards Tale (1/2)
Not sure what category: X-wing, Privateer
-

Ouch! Playing this game gives you Carpal Tunnel! After years of being spoiled by Dawn of War and StarCraft 2's excellent interfaces, this one has made my Actions Per Minute go through the roof.
Incidentally: I found a, um, 'evaluation' copy of Dune2000. It is in Spanish. Its frickin awesome.
OTT: We should all reevaluate our games into categories. Something like "First Favourite Game", which for me was:
Space Wars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Wars) (NOT SpaceWar! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacewar!) which was way before my time)
Greatest Game Ever?
Mario Kart
Anyone can play it
Everyone loves it
-
Half Life
Greatest game ever.
Brilliant level design, Unique and original game play. No annoying Cut Scenes, In depth story told through the characters encountered in the game. Bitchingly difficult AI with marines that worked as a squad and finally:
Easter Eggs in levels
-
Half Life
I dunno.
It was poos shooty gameplay with a brilliant setting, narrative, and characters.
For the time: Poos shooty gameplay games had little narrative beyond "You shoots the people and they fall down"
In that respect: Ico is similar. Poos escorty quest gameplay with a brilliant setting, narrative, and characters.
Or Tetris. Poos puzzley gameplay with a simple design and interface.
-

poos? Poos?!? POOS?!?!?
Heathen, Unwashed, Heresy!
also with my reasoning for the greatest game ever is what it did for all subsequent games - it forced the story to not only be integral to the game but also be told through the game. No longer was the plot an after thought with a screen of text telling you something had happened...

I was having a look through games from 1996 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1996_in_video_gaming), games from 1997 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1997_in_video_gaming), and games from 1998 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_in_video_gaming) and you know what?
You are totally, totally right. It is like someone from Vave in 2005 teleported back to 1998, took a look around, and said, "Why hello their chaps! You seem to be trying to make First Person Shooter video games but can only seem to theme it around fantasy or fantasy horror with no story. This is how you should do it.", plonked Half Life down and then promptly disappeared back into the future.
And when 2005 rolled around the same guy was there in his top hat and monocle
"Well well. Took 7 years for you chaps to catch up? Heres Half-Life 2. I'll see you in another 10 years"
And promptly vanished, never to be seen again until 2015.
We should call that man "G-Man" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G-Man_(Half-Life))

Actually, if you have a look back a little further you run into this game by Bungie of all people:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marathon_(computer_game)
Marathon is a first-person shooter video game developed and published by Bungie, and released in December 1994
Although Marathon features action-heavy, first-person shooter gameplay similar to Doom and other contemporaries, the game is renowned for having an intricate story line that is also an essential element of its gameplay
UNFORTUNATELY:
it was widely seen as a Macintosh counterpart to Doom
Seriously: Games for a Mac? How laughable

Elite on the amstrad was great as well, tough to dock though!
If you want a revisit to Elite you can try Oolite
http://sourceforge.net/projects/oolite-linux.berlios/?source=directory
Description
A cross-platform, user-modifiable three-dimensional space trading and combat game.
I just crashed into a space station. I cant remember Elite being this hard!

Command & Conquer: Red Alert.
I've never had such a satisfying experience with a video game as I did one day when I sat down and had a skirmish, almost getting wiped out and bringing my army back from the brink of annihilation and slaughtering every son of a bitch.
Next to that, probably playing Final Fantasy 7 and allowing myself to get headaches from too much game time.

Actually I was just thinking I really liked Morrowind, played that heaps, I liked being able to create my own spells. Also FF7 was great, ultima VII was also awesome, Doom, also awesome. Ok now that I have started thinking about it there are quite a lot of games I really like but I can't give one the title of best.
Also great games:
BF2
BF1942
Goldeneye on the N64
Ultima VI
Gran Turismo 2 and 1
Diablo
Diablo II
Half Life
Quake II
Gran Theft Auto Vice City
My Hero for the sega master system
and I should probably include alex the kid as it was built in to my Sega and I ended up being able to clock it without dying.
I'm sure I have probably missed some.

My Missus owns all challengers to that game - she can clock it without dieing after all those years still - and she remembers all the glitches and codes

yes that should have also been on my list, had good times playing that.
-
I remember playing duke3d and being wow'd by the fact the environment actually allowed you to be on a level directly above someone.
Forgot to add, my first foray into online FPS was Unreal Tournament, cannot remember what NZ servers I played on but back at the end of 1999 and for most of 2000 this was all I did online. I had played duke3d 'online' first via modem head to head.
-
My first online game was Command and Conquer renegade, was fun times, that has quite a unique multiplayer setup. Played on dial-up, awesome pings.

I remember hiding in a cupboard while shrunken with a jetpack.
When I flew out, my friend stood on me, like stepping on a sweary, vicious bug

Those movies are awesome
-
I usually don't bother with horrors because they're usually just "oh look, doing stuff, doi-CHEAP SHOCK TACTICS TO SCARE YOU UNEXPECTEDLY".
That Evil Dead remake actually looks genuinely scary.
Still not going to watch it.

Games, like movies, require experience. The more games you play the better chance you have of spotting a really good one, which is why the "Best Games" always tend to fall on the oldest or most influential of the type.
This is why games like Elite (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_(video_game)) keep getting brought up. Because it is a simple idea i.e Get Rich or Die Tryin' with many intricacies. Plus the many many remakes never caught the originals charm, which a possible exception being Freelancer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freelancer_(video_game)).
However the "Best Game" would have to be M.U.L.E as later games have taken one aspect of that game and turned them into full blow games.
Other great old games are:
Universe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universe_(1983_video_game)) and from The same Universe: Breach 1 (http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/37-strategy/19833),2 (http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/37-strategy/19834),3 (http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/37-strategy/19835)/Rules Of Engagement 1 (http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/37-strategy/20620) and 2 (http://www.hotud.org/component/content/article/37-strategy/20621) - Gameplay which would be instantly recognisable to players of The Xcom Games (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xcom). You build a ship, you attack other ships, and you can board their ships or planets with your squads to perform missions.
Kind of like Xcom, except you are the aliens, not the defenders.

Have any of you kids played Microposes only RPG game Darklands (1992)?
http://www.myabandonware.com/game/darklands-1k5#download
It was amazing in its day and is a masterpiece of historical RPG, even by todays standards. System/Setting wise: It was even better than Fallout and Elder Scrolls: Arena

Other than the classic Alone in the Dark and Aliens games, there was another surprisingly scary game:
Space Hulk
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Hulk_(video_game)
Essentially you remote control several slow but powerfully armed and armoured Space Marines around a derelict Space Vessel which is infested with Alien creatures known as "Genestealers" (and which look like H.R Gigers famous Aliens). There are an infinite amount of Genestealers, but if you can secure points of the map you can cut off their entry points rendering sections of the ship 'safe'.
The reason the game is so bloody scary is because of its controls: It uses the old dungeon style of control system where you can only move in the four cardinal directions, so when you spot a blip coming towards you from 90 degrees it may already be too late. This combined with the incredible slowness of physical attacks they Marines perform means ALL hand-to-hand combat is tense. Especially when the marine being attacked is the only thing standing between the Genestealers and the backs of the rest of the Marines.
Also: Marine guns jam with incredibly unlucky timing.
Marines you are not directly controlling automatically go into 'Overwatch' in which they will shoot anything enemy that appears. Watching in powerless horror as a Marines gun jams and his life light blinks out is a feeling no one should ever be allowed to experience.

Correction - you are not controlling Space Marines, you are controlling Terminators.
