Nows a good time for us wellingtonians to get the quake kit sorted. Definatley a wake up call. My nana said she has no water :/ poor old girl, she was very shaken.
The government has got it wrong.

Man hugs all round, some scary shit eh?I had to go to work this morning and totally missed all the news about the earthquake. My boss said that his sister in Christchurch called him this morning when it happened (he starts work at 5am) and he was talking to her all the way through it.
Pics here...Those are crazy and scary. Like the whole city got nudged in one direction at once.

That only happens when the Crusaders lose mate, go home and beat the wife and head out for some good old shop destruction.
Enough to feel, not enough to scare.
Lasting mere split seconds, but enough to keep on toes for hours :/
I have very slow DSL but no dial tone on the line, don't know wtf is going on there :/
Well, I've never seen Christchurch for myself, so how do I know the shops there are not usually missing their walls, with the bricks covering the street in front of them.

errr an aftershock this morning was 5.1 on the richer scale and lasted longer than a few split seconds..
since the first hit the place hasnt stopped shaking some aftershocks lasting a few minutes.

You know the Richter scale is logarithmic right? 5.1 is less than half as bad as the original.
I woke up for it, but it was pretty mellow rocking until the very last jolt. It felt like a few minutes to you, but I can assure you it was much less.

Ok, correct me if I'm wrong (see Ngati, Menial) but this is to account for the massive differences in the damages between different parts of the city:
1) The main factor being the soil. The Avondale / Darlington and New Brighton areas were affected the most due to them being former swamp areas / close to the sea. This results in sandy, loose soil which not surprising doesn't fair well in a earthquake. Sandy soil also occurs around the Kaiapoi area thus why it was affected so badly as well and also accounts for the soil liquefaction in these places. Combine it with burst pipes = significant flooding. This is compared to the gravel / clay soils in the western parts of Christchurch, such as Middleton, where little damage occurred.
2) There are many state houses built in the 1930's-1950's in the western part of Christchurch as these were the main growth areas post WWII in Chch. These houses were very well built, with stronger materials, particularly with the strong use of native wood such as rimu and kauri, which are thick, dense woods and much more earthquake proof than modern cheaper building materials such as brick and pine.
3) The SW parts of Chch were or still are industrial areas resulting in a pioritsation of communication lines and critical infrastructure such as roading and water and sewage pipes.
Can the geologist chime in on say the bedrock types in Chch and if that was a factor?
The University of Canterbury’s acclaimed James Logie Memorial Collection has sustained significant damage in Saturday’s earthquake.
The damage to one of the finest collections of Greek and Roman antiquities on public display in the southern hemisphere is devastating to the University says Vice-Chancellor Dr Rod Carr.

“Fortunately, one of the most valuable items – the Stilts vase by the Swing painter – is currently on loan to the Getty Villa in Malibu, California, where it features in The Art of Ancient Greek Theatre.”

The Salvation Army has launched an appeal to help those affected by the 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck Canterbury on Saturday, 4 September.
Within hours of the disaster, The Salvation Army was asked to feed around 1000 people in at least two Christchurch locations, and was ready to mobilise in other areas as requested by Civil Defence. In Christchurch's suburbs and rural locations, The Salvation Army has also been responding to the emergency situation
There will be a multitude of needs in the days following the earthquake, and The Salvation Army is appealing for cash donations to strengthen its response.

We're a wealthy country with support mechanisms in place, public donations shouldn't be needed at this stage. This isn't Haiti. All house/contents claims etc will be processed in due course and additional assistance will be given by the central government. Already banks are wavering fees (both business and personal) for people in Christchurch. What people really need now is a helping hand from a neighbour or friend to clean up or taking over a warm meal etc

Anyone caught looting in the wake of Christchurch's devastating earthquake on Saturday would be harshly treated by the courts, a judge has warned.
"The court will be taking a close look at people who offended during this disaster," Judge Michael Crosbie said.
They would be presented to the courts as being people who were capable of anything.

Hi all,
I hope everyone has survived the earthquake and hasn't suffered too much damage!
At the moment the UC research teams are leading the liquefaction mapping effort around the city. Today we had 5 teams active around the city and hopefully more tomorrow. This data is time perishable - so we are really keen to record what has happned at your flat or house.
Could you please make a recording of (and email to me):
1) The location of your house (in latitude and longitude) - use Google Earth if you need.
2) Please report whether there has been any liquefaction at your location - this might be subsidence, soil boils/volcanoes, etc.
3) Please take a reading of the orientation (i.e. strike) of any cracks/fissures or sand volcano trends. Many of them will be associated with your foundations - but record this anyway. Please state the geographic location of the feature. Please be specific about your level of accuracy (e.g. measured to mm or estimated). State weather you used a compass, your iPhone, or just took a best guess.
4) Make measurements of the cracks (length, thickness, horizontal and vertical offset). Again - please try and be as accurate as possible. A full geographic description of the crack's orinentation would be great. The orientation, alignment of vents is really useful as we can back-analyse these with respect to local relief, river, subsurface geology etc later.
5) Has there been fissuring/cracking with or without sediment being ejected.
6) Where sediment has been erupted from the ground, undertake a full textural description - e.g. massive, light grey coloured, well sorted, fine grained sand. If you could take a representative sample (small plastic bag) and bring it in when uni reopens that would be awesome!
7) What is the elevation with respect to sea level or the river? An estimate is fine.
8) Descriptions of any evidence of subsidence or block rafting etc fissure envelopment etc. are all useful.
9) Take as many photos as possible!!! Just hold onto these at the moment - we will have a website you can up load them to ready within a few days.
10) Post a description of your experiences in a 'Felt Reports' at http://www.geonet.org.nz (if you had any additional damage - please make a description and include within this report).
11) Enjoy being part of this event!!
Please send your responses to me - in this rough format (just reply to this email). Please forward this onto as many friends and family in the Canterbury area as you can. We realise that much of the liquefaction material has been cleaned up already - but do what you can.

I can come help map grim!
The earthquake produced a 22km-long surface rupture and up to 4m of horizontal displacement in alluvial terraces that were deposited about 16,000 years ago at the end of the last glaciation.
When the last ice-age ended, rivers brought large amounts of gravel from the high country and distributed it throughout Canterbury, many meters thick in some places.
"Before Saturday, there was nothing in the landscape that would have suggested there was an active fault beneath the Darfield and Rolleston areas," said Kelvin Berryman, Manager of the Natural Hazards Platform at GNS Science.
"Geologists have no information on when the fault last ruptured as it was unknown until last weekend. "All we can say at this stage is that this newly revealed fault has not ruptured since the gravels were deposited about 16,000 years ago."
"It is highly likely there are other 'hidden' faults around New Zealand which may be capable of producing large earthquakes in the future," Dr Berryman said.
The fault had been accumulating stress for thousands of years. Faults fail catastrophically when stresses exceed a certain threshold.
Saturday's earthquake produced the strongest ground-shaking ever recorded in an earthquake in New Zealand. The highest ground-shaking measurement of 1.25 times the strength of gravity was recorded at Greendale near the epicentre.
Much is being made in the media of this as being a "new fault". This is probably not a "new fault" in the sense that the earthquake caused a previously unruptured part of the Earth's crust to rupture. My suspicion is that this fault has had earthquakes in the past, but has a sufficiently long recurrence interval (time between earthquakes) such that any prior evidence of past earthquakes was not visible on the surface prior to this earthquake. Much of the Canterbury Plains consist of sediments with soil profiles that suggest the surfaces are ~16,000 years old (person. commun. P. Almond, Lincoln Uni) - if these show no prior evidence of faulting then a reasonable conclusion, as proposed by GNS scientists, is that there had not been an earthquake on this fault in the last 16,000 years prior to this event. However, given the active nature of Canterbury's major rivers, it is possible that the oldest surface cut by the fault may be less than 16,000 years old, and may be as young as 6.000 yrs old. In that case, it is possible that the recurrence interval on the fault is much shorter than 16,000 yrs.
Yeah, I couldn't access it this morning...bandwidth exceeded...(his, not ours).

Bzzzt wrong - unless the company has a specific policy that covers them for 'Acts of God' & employee remuneration, it's annual leave or no pay - or up to the individuals to negotiate.

and why do we have aftershocks kids?
Aftershocks
Part of living with earthquakes is living with aftershocks. Earthquakes come in clusters. In any earthquake cluster, the largest one is called the mainshock; anything before it is a foreshock, and anything after it is an aftershock.
Aftershocks are earthquakes that usually occur near the mainshock. The stress on the mainshock's fault changes during the mainshock and most of the aftershocks occur on the same fault. Sometimes the change in stress is great enough to trigger aftershocks on nearby faults as well.
An earthquake large enough to cause damage will probably produce several felt aftershocks within the first hour. The rate of aftershocks dies off quickly. The day after the mainshock has about half the aftershocks of the first day. Ten days after the mainshock there are only a tenth the number of aftershocks. An earthquake will be called an aftershock as long as the rate of earthquakes is higher than it was before the mainshock. For big earthquakes this might go on for decades.
Bigger earthquakes have more and larger aftershocks. The bigger the mainshock, the bigger the largest aftershock, on average, though there are many more small aftershocks than large ones. Also, just as smaller earthquakes can continue to occur a year or more after a mainshock, there is still a chance for a large aftershock long after an earthquake.
Yes, the State should cover everything. Infact, lets abolish insurance all together so citizens don't need to take any responsibility for themselves.

doubtful. NZ experiences 10000s of quakes a year.
although, some geologists believe large quakes can cause existing faults to also pop off like a zip. but there is no evidence at this stage to support that occurring.

Small businesses shut down by the Canterbury earthquake will get wage subsidies of $350 a week per worker to pay employees under a package just announced by Prime Minister John Key and Social Development Minister Paula Bennett.
The package will be available to companies with fewer than 20 workers and will be backdated to the date of the earthquake. Ms Bennett said $15 million had been set aside at this stage to cover the payments.
Ms Bennett said it was aimed at protecting jobs and supporting small businesses which could not operate due to damage from the earthquake.
"This is a deliberately fast response because small businesses are particularly vulnerable at this time," she said.
The subsidy will be paid for up to four weeks initially and businesses can re-apply after four weeks if they are still unable to operate.
The main parts of the package are:
• $350 per week gross wage subsidy
• Advance lump sum paid to employer
• Employer can 'top up' subsidy
• Backdated to date of earthquake
• Firms holding insurance cover for loss of earnings will be expected to use this before accessing the wage subsidy.
Ms Bennet said it was not yet known how many businesses and employees would need to take up the package.
Firms who can pay wages through their insurance will not have access to the fund.
"We’re very aware small businesses have been hit hard by this crisis and we are determined to help them get through the worst of it," says Ms Bennett.
Businesses can apply from this Thursday and will be paid within 24 hours.
Employers should call the Government earthquake helpline 0800 779997.

UPDATE ON CHRISTCHURCH EARTHQUAKE FOR PRESS AND PUBLIC (AS OF 9:00 am NZ time September 8th 2010): Why the aftershocks and when will they stop?
Mainshock was a Magnitude 7.1 earthquake with epicentre located ~44km WNW (273 degrees) of Christchurch near town of Kirwee. Epicenter based on field evidence ~12 km SSE of Darfield (43degrees34minutes45seconds S, 172d11m15s E).
University of Canterbury, GNS and Penn State scientists have identified the fault scarp in the field and have been making measurements of the fault displacement. Updates will appear here. Seismologists busy processing the constant stream of aftershocks. See GNS Geonet for aftershock data including magnitudes and approximate locations. The location data will improve with implementation of seismographs in the vicinity of the fault zone.
My take on the aftershocks is as follows:
1. Aftershocks are caused by slip on the sticky parts of the fault and the fault tips that did not rupture during the main earthquake. They may also occur in the broader area around the fault, as the surrounding rock mass adjusts to the main earthquake. It is also possible that some of these earthquakes may record slip on another fault, as large earthquakes such as our 7.1 are known to adjust the stress field in the crust and even trigger movement on other faults in the region. We know that other E-W trending faults are present throughout Canterbury, including offshore, so this is possible. I am going out with a field team shortly to attempt to get a better understanding of the geometry of the main fault and possible others beneath the surface.
2. Significant aftershocks such as the ones we have been feeling in our beds at night or walking around during the day are likely to continue for weeks to months. We will not get another Mw 7.1 earthquake on the same fault that generated this large earthquake as the main earthquake relieved most of the strain energy that had gradually built up on this fault over time. An aftershock as large as Mw 6 is possible. However, my optimistic guess is that we are unlikely to get an aftershock as big as a Mw 6. For instance, the largest aftershock following the 2010 Mw 7.0 Haiti earthquake was Mw 5.9 and occurred 8 days after the main earthquake. The largest aftershock following the 2010 Mw 7.2 northern Baja (Mexico) earthquake was a 5.7 and occurred 2 months after the main earthquake (Kevin Furlong, person commun). Interestingly, the Baja earthquake also had a cluster of three Mw>5 aftershocks within an hour, similar to what we experienced here on the terrible night of September 6th. I know this is distressing a lot of you but I am hopeful that these aftershocks might be the biggest we get. However, they may not be, and we could get a bigger one months from now.
3. Although there is some uncertainty in the location of the aftershocks, it seems to me that the biggest ones have been located at the tips of the fault, near Rolleston (east end) and Greendale (west end). This makes sense if the slip gradient (differences in amount of slip along the fault during the main earthquake) is high near the ends of the fault, as we have been seeing in our fault offset measurements. In this case, the worst aftershocks we are likely to feel in Christchurch are likely to be the ones associated with slip on the eastern tip of the fault and in the region east of the fault, although this will also depend on the ground conditions and other properties of the aftershock earthquake, such as the depth. A shalllow aftershock will feel more intense than a deep one. We recently felt one this morning (Wed Sept 8) that seemed quite intense. Geonet reveals that it was a Mw 5.1 within 5 km of Lyttelton at a depth of 6km. The reason it felt so intense here was because it was close and was shallow.
4. In general, both the magnitude and frequency of aftershocks will diminsh with time. So please try to remain as positive as possible - I know it is scary but a big part of the fear is your recollection of the shock you felt during the main earthquake

WATER RESTRICTIONS RELAXED
Water in Christchurch no longer needs to be boiled, authorities have announced, after tests revealed no bacterial contamination.
The Emergency Operations Centre this evening lifted its boil-water notice for Christchurch city, including Banks Peninsula.
The relaxation of the restrictions followed three days of testing for the city's water, with more than 500 samples tested by city council and public health staff. The samples were all clear of bacterial contamination.
Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Dr Alistair Humphrey said it was a "small step towards normality after such a difficult few days."
I think I would've gone crazy if I was in ChCh.

Pakistan had an earthquake?
I was taking a walk through one of Palmerstons largest park walks today. It got me thinking.
The Chch council is doing a pretty sweet job of getting things back to the way they were after the quake. A day or so ago Palmerston Had a flood, a pretty big one. Big enough to totally submerge the park and leave tree trunks and bushes scattered everywhere (including dredged up tyres and trash).
How have our council tried to fix it? By driving vehicles all the way through it, totally destroying the grounds.
It's pathetic.
Question about the amount of quakes, is the reason there are so many aftershocks because the ground has moved and now its settling back down?
No, the aftershocks you are currently experiencing is the surrounding bedrock and (potentially) other faults readjusting to the initial quake.

An engineer says he was lucky to not be crushed when an irate worker attacked him with a demolition digger.
Consulting engineering firm director Jade Kirk said he was twice hit by the bucket of a digger after approaching the driver in the central city on Wednesday afternoon.
Kirk was working to stabilise the quake-damaged former Trinity Congregational Church, now the Octagon restaurant, at the corner of Worcester and Manchester streets.
Diggers working diagonally across the road on the demolition of the quake-destroyed Westende Jewellers building were causing vibrations that Kirk said widened cracks in the 135-year-old church "to a point where there was a high probability of collapse" .
After removing workers from the church's tower, he and art historian Ian Lochhead asked the drivers to stop.
Kirk said one of the drivers "went off the handle" and began abusing him.
As he was phoning the demolition company's boss, he said the driver swung the bucket in his direction, stopping "a few feet away".
As a startled Kirk put the phone back to his ear, the bucket swung again, striking him on the right shoulder and knocking him "about a metre sideways across the rubble".
Kirk said he dialled 111, but the driver put the bucket over his head and "drove it down on top of me".
Kirk, who was wearing a safety hat, said he was pushed down about half a metre.
"I had to bend my knees and back to prevent it from crushing me and to get out from under it," he said.
"I got off the site and rang the police and his employer. It was the first time I've been assaulted by a digger. I was terrified."
Kirk was back at work yesterday in his central city office while two Southern Demolition diggers remained idle at the demolition site.
"People just need to slow down and make sure the correct decisions are made when demolishing buildings," he said. "Removing one building can significantly damage another building nearby."
Southern Demolition director Alan Edge said he was unaware of the incident, and there were bigger issues to deal with in the city.
Lochhead, a Canterbury University associate professor of art history, confirmed Kirk's account of the incident.
"If I had taken a piece of three-by-two and given him [Kirk] a reasonably firm rap on the head with it, that's what it was like."
"I had to bend my knees and back to prevent it from crushing me and to get out from under it"

and the moral of the story.... always have insurance! Hell, if we were paying the rent, we sure wouldn't be in a flash pad during this time of uncertainty 8)
Are you sure they're paying?
It doesn't sound like any insurance company I've ever dealt with.
I think that will depend on negotiation. We have a lot of stuff in our house demo people will want, so it will come down to the contract I suppose. If the house is safe enough for you to enter, I'm sure you will be able to take what you want.
I am new to this. Am waiting for AMI to look and tell us what is happening then will start taking necessary steps. Hoping thw salvage available will keep demo costs down.
thanks for the offers guys. At this stage nothing is happening until AMI has been through, then will have to find someone to tell us what to do from there.

I would have thought that ownership passes to AMI if they write it off.
Wheeeeee, decent aftershock.
1 floor up, shaking around. Good times.
slept thru that one
can I go pillage ;)
Yep, i hear yah, the whole thing is a major inconvenience and I can't start to imagine what it is like for you. Was discussing with my better half what's going to happen when they have to come and remove 2 chimneys, plaster half our house and paint it. I'm picking we might be looking for alternate accommodation for a week or so. Cos I am so not letting a 1 year old live in a dusty painty house for the whole period, and lathe and plaster makes a HUGE fucking mess!I'm in the same boat, will have will 3 under 2 1/2, I can see a lot of arguments. in the future, do they just fix all the cracks and paint or do they take the walls off check the 50year old studs and re Jib?
geonet is down for me :(
Is it wrong to want to put bets on which buildings have now fallen down? My moneys on something down colombo near harvey norman

Nothing like a quake to wake you up in the morning..the 'quake wake'...mmmmmmmmm...
Hate to think what the Uni is doing atm lols.
Not looking forward to our 6+ aftershock :(
I thought history had a pretty good record of showing there was normally a -1 mag aftershock for most major seismic events. Bath's Law & Gutenberg-Richter law both seem to agree.
Mr Duck like to share any info here?
college shook like a bitch, felt way more than a 5, since barely anything is noticable for a 4.3 or 4.4

Anyone know when earthquakes in the canterbury region stop being called 'aftershocks'? Is there a specific time or does it continue on until we have another major one?
Srsly didnt feel that big here anyway
In saying that, that 5 last week felt like a 6

Your mum is unstable.

Man, that big?
I barely woke up for it.
So those other places that had huge (even bigger I think?) are still being torn apart?
that one cracked a floor board..........
=( Depressing.
Also, yea I saw that about the floorboard, but NZ is a pretty well off country, where as Haiti on the other hand...
How the fuck are you people still getting aftershocks? Is this normal?
Dude it's pretty serious. You would have no idea what they must be experiencing bro.
Nah I am pretty sure if the earthquake hit Auckland the media would of reported much more. Kinda like how Americans still go on about 9/11 yet hundreds of innocent people from the middle east get murdered every day... Just saying...
My mum has discovered their house piles are cracked too... they have yet to be seen by an EQC inspector.
us... we're still waiting for our paperwork to be spat out the other end of the Melbourne processingfarmfacility

You got your wish then, let's hope this signals the wind down that's needed.
Paul at Playtech has just said that Playtech will be happy to assist anyone with service requirements, and will provide discount vouchers for anyone with a Christchurch address later this week and next week when the couriers and airport are back in to it again. I'll let you know.
Also, just been watching the news, and it's ugly in the city centre, hope there are no GetSome'ers in the mess......
speakman has just posted in BW forums. He's ok and he has MattiH with him as well.

Government helpline 0800 779997 up and running for earthquake assistance..
just a quick note guys, cell networks are useless at the moment, particularly Vodafone and Telecom.
unsure about the bitchiwoo landline
you are more than welcome sunshine just glad you bloody answered. still no word from grim - his landline is up and running but the cell pyro flicked me doesnt belong to him anymore, anyone got an updated mobile number for him?
anyone heard from rex or have a contact number?
I just got home from SIT. The earthquake hit when we were in class and half of us spent it watching news about the earthquake on youtube, twitter, facebook and CNN.
Southland has lost its 111 service, eftpos is mostly down and 3g is currently down. I think all services have been diverted to Christchurch to help.
Are the landlines down too?(generally) I am unable to ring my parents or sister or anyone...fuck be safe guys.
Anyone get incontact with reece/valv?
Have his cell, but probably yonks old from the ISMKI days.
Yea. The church is on the news. People where in that tower, is what the news crew is saying.
Did anyone see the interview on tv with the Tope guy?

I was actually glad to see him and his mother there, when we were evacuating she was screaming on the street and crying saying "my son is in there!" and well who do we see, that lucky sob survived. I think he was just massively camera shy.Im glad you are safe! :D
CHecking in, family all ok, my house gone, mum and dads house gone.
Alive.
Love to all in Chch
RHO is in CHC?
The house is well liveable. No fresh water but we can work around that ( I have lots of beer :D) lots of cracks and the mantlepiece in the lounge fell off, but we can live here just fine for the time it takes us to move
Tough day at the office.
For them or you?
It wasn't for me :/
OK my quake story.
I am one lucky $#@!er.
I was at Chch Hospital having an MRI. I don;t like MRI's as I suffer from mild claustrophobia, so I had been given a sedative, so when the quake hit I felt zero stress, even though I was actually in the $#@!in MRI machine at the time. I was thrown around like a rag doll, but no injury. The technician dragged me out. I was woozy on my feet so they shoved me in a wheelchair and gave me over to 4 hot little radiography students who gave me lots of TLC for 20 minutes until Kris ($#@!i) managed to find me.
The house we're living in has taken some damage and teh street outside is $#@!ed. We have no water or drainage at the moment, but we have already signed up for and paid for the new place we were planning to move to in a few weeks. The landlord rang us this evening to say the new place had taken little damage, so we will be moving very very soon.
I may lay off lotto tickets for a wile. We seem to be using up all our luck in other areas.
Shag Rock gone? confirm/deny anyone?
valv - is fine no power at the mo though'
anyone heard from rex?

also if anyone happens to know an Anna Davidson or Stuart Flecther and have seen or heard theyre ok please let me know, they are the only two staff that have yet to check in - i understand they were out at the time.
for those wondering about sgt187 - hes all fine as well, he was on a roof building away when he was called out to another job site so he escaped unharmed
so pyro/anyone else: if you can think of GetSomeers no one has heard from if you pm me their numbers ill ring around and see who i hear from.
No fatalities or serious injuries have been reported on campus.
Ah bro,
we're o.k...alive! we haven't moved and won't be for a while as this place seems to be really sturdy...glad to hear you're o.k...was worried as you work in town...just got power back on...no cell phone credit :(
Take care

Now on a technical question, refering to: http://quake.crowe.co.nz/QuakeMap/Last24Hours/
Is it unusual that all of the shocks are being logged within that confined area, when the original sep quake was further inland and then swarmed around that plains ?

I have an uneasy feeling about these companies that are marketing Earthquake appeals. Playtech is one of many doing this, my email is being bombarded with them. I'm sure most of them are doing it with the best intentions but it just feels like another sale dressed up in new clothes.
To reassure cynics like myself wouldn't it be better if all profits from the promotion went to the earthquake appeal. I don't want to come across as an asshat, as any money heading to Ch Ch is a great thing. I guess I just don't like the commercialization aspect of it

Something we can completely agree on.
The two skin-headed men waved offensive hand gestures at photographers and court staff and media present in a makeshift courtroom at the Christchurch Police Station.
I think there's probably a reason Lias got away from all that...
Or is it the other way around?

Not my photo, but this is about 300m from my house. When I was 14 a friend of mine and I dug a trench to connect a septic tank to the main sewerage line. It was about half that length and the same depth, and took three days.
hehe was holding my computer the hole time!
I wonder what chch's new population is with all the people fleeing. I doubt a lot will ever return for anything more than to grab their belongings and get back out again.
I don't think this is the case at all, of all my friends/family/extended friends circle etc. I don't know anyone who has left Chch permanently. Nearly everyone I know still has their job and house. Most that have left were due to lack of water/having children/wanting to get away from the aftershocks for a few days.Yeah where as my partner and I know quite a few that have lost their home and work and have nothing left here. They won't return.
a lot of people will say they are going to leave permanently but wont, its just the shock which will passmmmm hard to say.
I agree you with eh.I've just got back from Queenstown and two of the waitresses at Millbrook (where we stayed) were caught up in the quake. They had some pretty harrowing experiences and showed us some photos that they took. One of them bought a car about two months ago and it was destroyed (uninsured) - along with some other possessions. We always have "fines" sessions when we travel, and we'd decided to donate all our fines money to the Earthquake appeal.
It's like "We will only donate money if you buy something off us first", and I don't like that at all. If they were serious, that would make a lump sum payment straight up. I know ANZ and Fonterra are making massive upfront donations, good on them.
I just spent over $1000 at Playtech last week. I hope some of that goes towards Christchurch.
I wonder what chch's new population is with all the people fleeing. I doubt a lot will ever return for anything more than to grab their belongings and get back out again.
I was talking to the Mrs. today. We were discussing how Palmerston North would cope if we were in Chch's situation.
We both came to the conclusion that looting would be out of control.

I second this, during the Queensland floods some businesses were doing donation matching eg. if you donated $10 through them they would also donate $10
Is anyone in NZ doing that?

Subject: Christchurch Earthquake 2 minute silence
healthAlliance intends observing the 2 minute silence at 12:51 pm today. The way I intend making this happen is that;
1. If you are on a phone call you either terminate it prior to 12:51 or you may share the 2 minute silence with the person on the other end of the line (both in silence).
2. At 12:51 an email will go out announcing the start of the 2 minute silence
3. At the finish of the 2 minute silence a further email will go out to advise the finish.
You may do this at your desk or if you want to share the silence with your workmates please feel free to do so and organise your groups prior to the 2 minute silence
lol yeah, he kept it up all the way into Hornby as well.
anyone know when people are allowed into town to even get their cars? Starting to get my rage face on
^ was that a humble brag?

@Tiwaking Glad to hear the latter. I stayed in a hotel right beside that cathedral back in 2001. It's very sad to see it in that state. And I can only hope that the death toll doesn't go up by an awful lot more.
I dont think it was pyro.
As explained on that episode of NCIS that we both saw, a humble brag is when you complain about something that most people would be happy with.

Earthquake in Welly :o
Earthquake in Welly :o
A Waitangi dawn ceremony ended with a Maori elder prophesying the destruction of Wellington in a huge earthquake that would leave the Beehive "lying in the debris of the streets".
fuckit, just flee NZ.
True. But it's the only easy option.
Yeh, but aussie has poisionous shit, floods and hurricanes, retarded heat, ridiculous amounts of bogans (the entire population)... and crocodiles that eat children.
Queensland is not Australia, I would not live in Queensland if you paid for my flights and accommodation. Queensland is full of bogans, where as most other states there is a significantly lesser amount of them..
Sporks mad
A dingo ate his baby
Moving anywhere in Australia is moving too close to spork. The guy that thinks 40 degrees is cold.
Yeah my cars in their closed off area inside the closed off area which is open to military only, not even police are allowed in it :/ so no fucking good for me. Can't get it till next week earliest if it's still up by then and no fucking clue on the buildings status
starting to get really fucked off with this, really regret not taking it out with me from day one.
Bugger. Sorry to hear bro.
Chch >> Perth
Big hole filled with money hungry boguns (I just lived there for winter).
Freo is nice (creatures and others).
Adelaide is a really nice city, if I was moving to Aus without already coming from there I'd rate the main cities as best for Kiwi resettlers;
1. Brisbane - Hot, lots of work, theme parks and a huge Kiwi population and proximity to Surfers is nice
2. Adelaide - Just a nice city with lots of jobs and a bit of soul
3. Melbourne - Huge place where its always happening, you want it, it can be found here all be it a little sprawling
4. Hobart - Small, quaint but very similar to a NZ city people are nicer food is better. Houses are cheaper but you can still get good money.
5. Sydney - Too big and everyone appears to want to kill you, the beaches are overcrowded and its full of nuts. Good job oppurtuniies but the rent is too damn high!
6. Perth - Souless money hungry pit. Every bogun who wanted lots of money and a huge V8 lives here. Six or the eight major buildings are banks and it shows. A night on the town is all about being better than the next person. It fails. Only go here if you have a mining money plan and a trades ticket.
I cant account for Canberra as I've only driven through it and Darwin sounds fkn mad so...

there's massive rage on twitter at john for how rude he was towards the moon man, it's hilarious. One of the moon mans followers is having a huge cry rofl, then when you try and raise the points again the person sits there with their fingers in their ears. Sigh.Just had dinner with my friends parents. They are huge moon man believers or, as I like to call them, moonies (apologies to the real Moonies).
Tiwa, show those believers this:One is a happy clap, one is a Jehovahs witness.

They'll believe any old nonsense.
if panel works all I need i'll be over the fucking moon man. Seriously would be stoked if I got it back
Just found out that my cousin had to walk home from Halswell where he works because no-one thought to give him a lift back to town. His flat is in Fitzgerald Ave and he doesn't have a car. Oh well, at least he's safe.Half of Fitzgerald Ave is a no go area.
Anyone happen to know what state Washington Skatepark is in?
Its the name of the skatepark on the corner of Moorhouse Ave and Washington Way.
The Dean of Christchurch Cathedral, Peter Beck, has told of his elation upon hearing no bodies had been found in the wreckage of the cathedral and its collapsed spire.
Half of Fitzgerald Ave is a no go area. His place has been checked and cleared apparently.
Washington?
Fuck that is awesome news...

Very over itI can understand that. I don't know if I would stick round. Moving sucks though..friends/fam etc. Dunno that living on such an active fault line is worth staying though either. :-(
We $#@!en laughed loud here
Great news, I wonder where the exact number of 22 came from?
:(
I'd hardly say a fault line they didn't know about is 'such an active fault'
I can understand peopel wanting to get out, but I believe it should be a quick holiday and then come back and re-assess the situation.
I've lost my home (though still livable) will probably lose my job with no prospects for other employment. I have a family to provide for. I am still not making any rash decisions to move, Chch has been my home, I don't want to turn my back on it now when the city needs all the help it can get!

Same for us really. We're heading to Wellington for a couple of nights break next thursday, then on the sunday, after we get back, we'll be moving to the new flat we've got, then soem time around the 15th I'll find out if I still have a job. Tough times coming
Beer O'clock next week then....

right... quick escape has been sorted & booked... the bitchiwoo tribe (minus eldest child) will be in Wellyburg for two nights this week.
gonna do some fun things like brush my teeth with running water, drink the tap water without boiling it twice, wander round a functional cbd and sleep in a building that doesn't have major cracks in every wall and moguls in the floorboards.
fun times :p
nope all clear, the brewery was the only building of concern and that looks like it is in full production.

Christchurch residents will be offered quake relief in a surprising form - free beachside holidays in Fiji.
Airlines and resorts in the Pacific nation are planning to offer free or heavily discounted holidays to New Zealanders who were severely affected by the 6.3-magnitude quake that struck the country's second largest city on February 22.
The natural disaster, the country's biggest in 80 years, officially claimed 166 lives, with the final death toll expected to rise above 200.
Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association president Dixon Seeto said Air New Zealand and Fiji's national carrier, Air Pacific, were offering heavily discounted flights between Christchurch and Nadi for March.
Flights would cost as little as US$27 ($36.58) one way.
A number of major hotels were working on free holiday packages for affected families, Mr Seeto said.
"This shows the human side of the industry," he told Radio New Zealand International.
"I mean, we are a people industry, it's not all about making money.
"New Zealand is Fiji's second largest market (after Australia) and I just think on compassionate grounds it needs to be done."
It was recognition that Fiji felt for the people of Christchurch, "especially those who have lost family members and things like that", he said.

OK we've booked a truck for Sunday 13th. If we have 2 or 3 people who are free to help load and unload the heavy stuff, they will be amply rewarded with beer and pizza. PM me or bitchimom if you're free and keen
A mate of mine was a Civil Defence volunteer down in Christchurch and he was telling me that they got training/warning about liquefaction. This was a few years ago - apparently they had a map of the city with areas indicating where liquefaction was most likely to occur.
Candice gets a free advert, in case the boys can't find her new premises.

We have received information that the following sites have received a red sticker and therefore are not accessible until Civil Engineers have inspected them further. It is unlikely that cars will be retrievable from these sites in the short term

It is interesting that after this earthquake people will be very worried about earthquakes, yet the real danger is simply being on New Zealand's roads.

No firm news yet but the Chch earthquake is going to be made to look small by the Japan earthquake, 8.9 magnitude, brace for some bad news for japan, on the tv now
Damn. Poor buggars have just finished helping us in ChCH, now they have to go back and pick up the pieces of their own homes.
LATEST: Numerous injuries have been reported after Japan was struck by a magnitude-8.8 earthquake off its northeastern coast, triggering a 4-metre tsunami that washed away cars and tore away buildings along the coast near the epicentre.
Im already over the moon man. fucking ambulance chasing charlatan.
Peak ground acceleration (PGA) is a measure of earthquake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake) acceleration on the ground and an important input parameter for earthquake engineering (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earthquake_engineering). Unlike the Richter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richter_magnitude_scale) and Moment magnitude (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moment_magnitude_scale) scales, it is not a measure of the total energy of an earthquake, but rather how hard the earth shakes in a given geographic area.So even though the 6.3 was weaker than the 7.1 we had, the earth shook almost 2 times harder, there have only been 3 earthquakes on record above 1g, 2 of them in Chch.
Nice job predicting this earthquake Ken Ring you ambulance chasing fucking fuck.

He did say there would be another quake on the ring of fire, which has happened. He was 9 days out.
The stupid deserve to be preyed on. It's their punishment for being stupid.
hahah his website is 'unavailable'I hope it never comes back ever again. There is enough stupidity on the internet for everyone and their moon interpreting dog.
looks like i'll be free woodawg. pyro, you driving?
He did say there would be another quake on the ring of fire, which has happened. He was 9 days out.
I can understand people venting their anger out on him, but if he BELIEVES he has some sort of system that works in quake prediction you would have to warn people
I'd rather he didn't, warning people on the ring of fire that there will be an earthquake soon is completely redundant and helps noone.
You say he was 9 days out, I disagree he was correct there was an earthquake on the ring of fire on that date, just like most days.
In other news...
I predict someone will be murdered tomorrow somewhere in the North-American region, i'm sure you will find this information very useful.
There is also no scientific basis for his theoriesNot true. You should read up on the basis he uses for predicting the weather - IIRC it's based on moon phases and tides, which doesn't seem too "out there".

Give us your take on it.I've seen a few of his isobaric maps that have been produced up to a year in advance and they don't seem to dissimilar to what the Metservice have published on the day (give or take a day or so). As a result, i can't understand why he's been dismissed out of hand - personally i'd like to see some serious computer batching done according to his theories and compared with the Metservice's own results to see which one produces the more accurate forecasts (which is ultimately what we're trying to achieve, is it not?)
Ring's theories are nothing but psuedo-science.I'm not talking about his earthquake theories - but his weather predictions. I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that he uses the same methodology that was in place for weather prediction before barometric pressure was discovered and adopted as the method for determining weather forecasts.

I was disgusted to see the angle the NZ media are now taking. Now that they have no new news to report about the earthquake, they are doing what they have always done - find someone to blame, and this time they are hounding the people who inspected the CTV building in the first quake.

I can kind of understand those trying to get data so they can start doing business again, but really they should have been doing off site backups if it was that important. Sadly a lot of small business just don't think about that sort of thing.
How do you backup a dress shop etc?
yep, what kitty said. How does a thriving coffee business backup coffee beans and truck sized machines?
How do I roll a machine out that weighs over a tonne, needs a 500kg compressor and 3 phase power.... The data files were the least of my concern after the EQ.... getting production up was.
There are thousands of individual, personal tragedies in Christchurch. A number of current businesses may go under, but the market for their services will remain and be met eventually. It is little comfort for the individuals involved, but that's how it's always worked.
The point I keep making is that any business should be as prepared as it possibly can be for their premises to be razed to the ground by fire. The issue at the moment is how slowly insurance companies come through with their payouts.
Just to give you an idea of what has happened here in Christchurch the following building have been targeted for demolition.
Copthorne (Durham Street)
Park Royal Hotel
Forsyth Barr Building
Grand Chancellor
Holiday Inn
Trust Building (Westpac)
Crown Plaza (Partial Demolition)
CTV Building
Pines Gould Corporation Building
Moorehouse Bridge Overpass
Harvey Norman Building (CBD)
Smith City Building and Carpark
Millennium Hotel (Partial Demolition possible)
Fitzgerald Street Overpass (Rebuild)
Memorial Ave Bridge (Rebuild)
Canterbury Spinners Building
The building above are just the main hotels etc.... There are many business now gone in Christchurch including Bars
last i heard was that the harvey norman building is being repaired, that was about a week ago. if it was official, i'd hope i would have heard from my boss by now if it was a recent development
They should just put some ramps up, 100km/h speed limit. Lets Duks of Hazard Christchurch streets.
Parking is gonna be easy in the future ;)
Anyone else getting sick of being asked to donate money?
I work for the company that owns the stadium so we have some of the core city engineers working with us. The generally agreed figure is that 70% of the CBD will come down
err the CTV & the PGC buildings won't take much to bring down...It was a memo from God. He's got those two and he's working on the rest..............
Where's the Fitzgerald Street Overpass? The only thing that i can think of is around the Avon - by Crighton Cobbers Boys Club (if that still exists).

I was being a littlke sarcastic at the email. It almost certainly referrred to the Moorehouse/Colombo overpass by Harvey Normans
Occasionally, yes. EVERYONE seems to be doing a drive for Christchurch. I haven't had change in my pocket since it happened.
If I start to get annoyed I remind myself that having no power, money, food, job and possibly losing a parent/child/partner/friend would be slightly more irksome.
Crighton Cobbers Boys Club (if that still exists).
Well, the months turned into years and over this time I became totally awestruck over the accuracy of Ken Ring's predictions. This page of Ken's in the magazine became my fishing bible. His predictions were rarely wrong and if they ever were there was usually a sign of nature to explain why, like a storm.
And how does this make news headlines?

Oh, and fishermen fuck me off as well, as bad as hunters. Yeah, let'scause ecosystem collapse but do nothing about it but fiddle while Rome burns.
Meat-eating cunts. Selfish bacon-loving arseholes. You will feel the wrath and it will hit you like a tonne of bricks...oh wai...
I love hangovers, arsehole
I wouldn't think the easing of worry comes from continued exaggerations of our situation.
.
Don't be such a tool.
You of all people should know full well that, hunting in NZ completely comprises of fauna which are introduced and pestilent - and therefore is ultimately to the benefit of natural eco-systems.
And don't try and get on the moral high-ground about eating meat, because plants have feelings to you vegetarian monster! You don't give a fuck about the lettuce or the barley or the hops' or the yeast you kill, how dare you try and be high-and-mighty about some of us feasting upon the Deer and Boar that fuck up our native flora and fauna.
As for fishing, large-scale commercial operations are the primary and most significant cause of overfishing. Private catchment could be completely sustainable if only we had the regulation and willingness to be so. Any fisherman worth his salt is pro-sustainability, because it's essential for his welfare init.
And, I still worked 12 hours today despite a hangover and 5 hours sleep, arsehole.
The problem with being a left wing extremist is that life makes a hypocrite out of you.

^ Have been watching Ashes to Ashes Series III this week, so am very 80's enabled. The ending was brilliant.
i liked the part where he fell off
i love how there was a midget with wheels
I thought the 'across the bonnet' at about 1:40 was a bit off. Only wankers skate on peoples cars.
That is rebuilding.
Lol wow are you serious? And that will work out to be cheaper than rebuilding? That is ridiculous! For Systems Analysis And Design planned and designed a house to be built in three days.
lol
Me 'n Woohoo were both working at ASB Arena today for The Wiggles concert... I'm just really glad the quake didn't happen 30 mins earlier, when thousands of adults & young kids were crammed into the concourse buying merchandise before going home... or 60 mins prior when they were all sitting watching the show.
My radar's a bit off tho, didn't think it was that big at the time. Then the texts start coming in - you ok, we've lost power etc - oh well, being blase about aftershocks makes it easier to calm other people down :o
lolI thought there was still non-molestation and trespass orders that stopped him from being near young kids?

nice meeting you again, it would of been crazy if it happend while the concert was on!

Looks like Christchurch.
I thought it was shit.
I thought it was shit.
I thought it was shit.
Even if it's Borked, it's still better than Palmerston North.
Ya gotta love a guy who's such an attention whore he'll say he's been shunning interviews *in* an interview.
$20 says he contacted the herald to report that he was in hiding.
Quit bitching retardo..
You don't even live there.
Neither do you?
Christchurch has plenty of people capable of that, it doesn't need a lot of bleeding hearts doing it for them.
As long as ezilybaitedbot replies, he'll keep doing it. :)
I too want to argue for the sake of it and subtly attack people. This thread looks good for such trivialties.

best quote, from a Scotsman who now lives in Chch... "You've got to change your terminology... your city isn't munted. In September it was munted, now it's fucked"
Great range of people, heaps of ideas and cautionary tales. Head full now... but have lots of audio recorded from today that I might do something with eventually
The Brewey on ST Asaph has been operating since Feb, they might lose a little of the building but the rest has been in production as far as I can tell. Drive past is twice a day.
A 5.5 aftershock, $#@! you guys must be over this by now!!

Greendale's getting busy again.

Raoul Duke: There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
lol
Y U NO Steam Rii? I wanted to tell you about the two very hawt Uruquayan (had to google how to spell that) surfer chicks that I gave a lift to, they are staying here for a couple of months and were wondering if I had a spare room... I had to say no, the miss would nut me but there was a fair amount of wood.
It was like the ultimate temptation... Empty house, Mrs away for a few more weeks...
Years gone by would have had a crack but I'm older and wiser...

The best way to think of it is to imagine that Zarkov is a troll, which shouldn't be hard.
I can't remember the last time he was a moderator.
I don't blame him though, driving trucks all day must dampen any higher brain function.
Bitchy little bitch today aren't we.
We all know you don't like Zarkov, I mean you point it out every chance you get. As soon as someone has a go at him in you jump with both feet. Why don't you put him on your ignore list if he bothers you so much?
he berates me more than I him. Occasionally I'll bite back.
Umm no
Don't see him having a go at you in this thread
Where are you, age of house, if you don't mind me asking?
*click's Bitchi's sig* cool pics, walk past them every day :P Been real interesting watching that girls panties come down.

Richmond WMC down as is the old church next to it. Massive sand eruptions in Madras St again. About to send wife and kids away to Weedons for water and safer environment for a few nights.
Grand Chancellor still up?
if it goes down, it's so taking the hotel across the street with it.
Maybe the westpac building too depending on how it falls I guess.
Drop a bomb on the fucker.....
Heard an ex-air force guy suggest something like getting the Aussies to drop a dummy LGB down the center, think I would pay to see that.
Have antarctic jacket though.
I could definately find that acceptable.
PS woohoo, best avatar yet I think.
OH NO, YOU KNOW SHIT'S GOT REAL WHEN BOB PARKER'S GOT HIS ORANGE JACKET ON.

Planetary Alignment / Earthquake Watch Update June 13th 2011
Uploaded by thebarcaroller on Jun 7, 2011
This is a Planetary Alignment Earthquake watch video, program used in this Heliocentric visual representation is Simsolarv2.0 and solar system scope
Two significant alignments play a major role on this day with Earth-Sun-Mercury and Jupiter-Venus-Mercury. It is possible that we may have a volcanic eruption on this day or a significant or a 6.5 to 7.5 magnitude earthquake.
Possible locations that could be at risk for this event are 23 Degrees or 44 Degrees South Latitude based on solar analysis. best fit locations are Loyalty Islands or Christchurch New Zealand
Here's another guy. Few more planet alignments still to come this year.

Any GetSome Chch members in the process of moving or buying/selling house?
Rumour is that the insurance companies are baulking again at granting insurance policies to people moving into a new(by new I mean its new for the owners, rather than just built) house in chch.
The 3rd hand account I heard is family A have insurance with tower for house X, are moving into house Y shortly. After the earthquakes on Mon, tower have declined to insure family A in house Y. Obviously there are legal remedies available depending on the facts of the case. But its still disgusting to hear imo. No doubt it has a lot to do with re-insurance stuff. Under its present owners house Y is insured by AMI. AMI may accept a policy for the same house but different owners.
I know there was a lot of trouble with insurance companies with the earlier quakes, mostly resolved now except for those arsehole clauses making the news currently, but anyone heard, seen, read something similar to the above?
East side all good bro!
quakes... a shitty subject
well ......... you do, but Im missing something then O_o
An apostrophe, at least!
ohhh close, 5.3 near akaroa.......crowe says greendale.... meh, canterbury ;)
I told you, volcano KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
At teh rate thinsg are going though teh red zone will get sorted quicker than us. fuckin incompetent AMI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc2GjOYgpeI
I would love to get my EQC claim settled. Im out of pocket $2000 for emergency repairs, Prescription Glasses that were stuck in the Red Zone, not to mention cant afford to replace my iPod that got wet in a building that the sprinklers went off in, my 50" plasma that smashed on the lounge floor, or replace my 3 business suit jackets that were left in the office that's still in the red zone, now assumed fu)ked due to the sprinkler thing. EQC need more workers and less red tape!..

Why? There was nothing wrong with that video? :S
road was closed for a reason.
Oh, I thought they just placed all those rocks there for the video. Where did they get all those rocks from?
Yeah, cos it was a cool mountain biking track
The "cool mountain biking track" is just below the road. I know 'cause I helped build it. I'd say it's munted now though and covered with rocks in places.
You wouldn't catch me biking up there at the moment.Big rocks are faster than bikes!
Knocked down like, Chumbawumba knocked down?
man that makes me sadThe video of the demolition made me sad too.

Lots of empty spaces :(
Wow, that is very telling photo.
Your city is going to look very cool when they rebuild it
Disagree. If that happens, market value of the land will drop and new entrepreneurs will be in soon enough. In the short term it will be ugly, but in the long term it will sort itself out. My personal belief is that the less local and national governments distort the market with welfare for existing investors, the better long term outcomes we will have.
The rebuild is more likely to be a fail if what gets rebuilt is distorted by handouts.
Comparing Queen St to the Square/Strip etc in Chch..... totally diff kettle of fish old chum.
And from what I remember reading, the population drop was sweet fuck all to nothing compared to what was expected
Hey Bitchi.....
Have Tweeterzored your quizzy thang (lotsa #eqnz ers in my stream), but I'd be interested in seeing what you're asking - don't wanna do the whole thang in case my one set of invalid experiences skews the results....
awesome, thx Zol
the questions are about media use of Cantabs over the last year: which media/communication methods worked or didn't, which ones they used to try & find out info about different things and other media/communication-y stuff. I've also got questions about length of time without power, location, emergency kit, transistor radio etc to see if some people/suburbs are more prepared these days. Mayor Bob reckons everyone's got an emergency kit now. I don't fink so... well, we don't (we're just lazy & we have most of that stuff around.... somewhere....)
And there's a part2 which has opportunities for longer answers/rants etc :welcoming:
I get the feeling there'll be heaps of this sort of stuff next year... I've applied for a couple of summer scholarships at UC, both are on EQ topics. I guess, if you can't beat 'em, study 'em! :playful:
So the word from an insider with an SIS contact is that they WERE Israeli spies and a whole lot more of that (training etc) goes on here than we realise.
There'll be a population boost once rebuild labour is imported. Also the CBD developed when Christchurch was much smaller. It's natural for peoples routine shopping and daily lives to be in clusters closer to where they live ( which also helps alleviate traffic issues). I hope the CBD does struggle to attract large corporations back, and stops being the Central Business District, and starts being the Central Living District, so we get a mix of inner city residential, culture, recreation and boutique businesses, that feed into the arts precinct and Hagley Park
With a history of flooding on the Canterbury Plains over the past 40,000 years, a sustainable future takes on a whole new meaning.
Tsunamis are a threat, and it is only a matter of time before our shores are visited again by the monster waves.
The sediments Christchurch is built on are generally less than 4000 years old. The history of flooding by both rivers and sea leaves us building our lives on a very dubious foundation.
Maori learned this lesson the hard way about 1450AD and retreated from seaside and low-lying sites following a catastrophic tsunami.
Another area of Maori wisdom was that the swamp that is Christchurch was never a place for them to live, rather a place to pass across. They viewed this swamp as just another food source. As one of the biggest natural swamps on the Canterbury Plains its future would have been better used for farming, such as occurred in early settlement.
A New Treaty Claim
I understand that for the first time ever, the Crown has filed a Treaty of Waitangi claim against an Iwi.The Government is claiming that Ngai Tahu sold them dud land in Christchurch and they want Ngai Tahi to buy the land back
oh god....I seriously cannot express how I feel about that. It is both funny and scary and funny.
grim what have you been doing?

Got a funny phone call from EQC on friday
^ Don't get precious - you're the one who advocates for bigger government. This is the result. :PWhat the fuck is that supposed to mean?
I don't recall advocating bigger government.
I don;t recall advocating smaller government either for that matter.
try standing between 13m high racking isles with hundreds of tons of food products balancing on thin rails above you. fun fun
Adelaide just had another.. Tremor?
Near Coast of South Australia, Australia.
Magnitude: 3.3 (ML)
Depth: 17 km
AEST: 19 October 2011 @ 02:52:25
And that was much bigger than the last one we had last year I think it was.
Funny thing about it is, the epicentre or what ever you call it, was right below the shopping centre which I have just got a job at, and if Adelaide was to have a proper quake, that's apparently where it would all go down.
not sure I want to watch this

He has archives.
- Technical Category 3 (TC3, blue): Moderate to significant land damage from liquefaction is possible in future significant earthquakes. Site-specific geotechnical investigation and specific engineering foundation design is required.
- There is no one-size-fits-all solution for homes in Technical Category 3 (TC3) that require repairs to foundations or need to be rebuilt. Foundations designed for homes in TC3 will be site specific and may involve deep foundation piles
- Site-specific geotechnical investigation will identify the best foundation design for your property to reduce the risk of injury to people and damage to your property in future earthquakes

Fuck . And now EQC, after telling us for 12 months that we were due a contents pay out, and that it woudl be anything up to 16K, have now decided ( we only know through the media) that they're not sure if they will. So we've been budgeting on that income for the rebuild for the last yearHey, that's our fucken tax dollars you're hoovering up, buddy. Be a bit more appreciative, eh?
cunts....

Well that's what happens when you slash, burn and deregulate to save a few bucks, so there's no safety oversight. The deregulation caused the CHCH earthquake - thank fuck for that, for a minute i thought it was a freak of nature and it could happen again. All we have to do is re-regulate and we'll never suffer from an earthquake or natural disaster again!

Now tell us whose job it was to make sure the people in the CTV building were safe, and why they're all dead now.

whole new meaning for 'working for families'
pike river was what i was was referring to. we have had more than one disaster down here, and I assumed that was the revelations the cat was referring to. There's several thousand people around the country who'd classify leaky homes as a disaster too. You know, that's where a National government deregulated the building industry because the market would ensure homes were built properly.Kool, so all we have to do is sue the government and all the leaky buildings will be fixed. It must be great to live in Woohooland where all the problems are so black and white. Of course, in Woohooland there wouldn't be any council inspectors who failed in their job. There wouldn't be any architects who designed such poor houses that they would leak. There wouldn't be any need to change the building code to try and assist people into housing because prices had got beyond their reach. No, all you need is a government because they deregulated.

Well it's been a busy day around here... And after much consideration we aren't going to just roll over like "the man" would like... we haven't finalised the plan quite yet, and will need your help to implement it, so stay tuned, and don't give up on us yet... we're trying to make a come back..

Sad that Pulzar is gone, alongside the replacement of George (by far the best radio station for young cool hipster motherfuckzzzz out son) for Mai FM (in lieu of Tahu? Never!).
My listening order was more or less
1. George
2. Radio New Zealand
3. RDU
3. Pulzar
4. Hauraki
5. Kiwi FM
Not that I listen to much anymore - bar Radio NZ in the mornings und nights.
I was talking about all of them.
Just more and more examples of why self/deregulation doesn't work.
ACC is probably at the heart of it.

I have now been advised that re-assessments requests for dwellings identified as being TC3 are now on hold.
The next steps for properties in this TC3 zone involves inspections that will consist of 2 main components:
- Drilling and,
- An offsite geotechnical analysis of the results.
Presently, EQC are aiming to get the drilling started in the next 6-8 weeks, however due to the number of properties in the TC3 zone it will likely take up to 6 months to get through every property. These results will then be reviewed by a geotechnical engineer who will establish the best foundation solution for each property
I don't shit coal, so can I put it in a paper bag before attempting to light it?
you'd sue the insurance company if they ever fucked around with a claim like this.
25 months and counting...
No inspection, no money, no answers. Hear from no one. See no one.
And people think all is rosey down here, fucking shambles and EQC are the root of all the problems!
I must have clocked up a gazbijillion hours on the phone to those useless cunts.
Finally..... 26 months later, EQC has agreed we are over cap and will pay us out for Sept and cap for Feb.
Fuck me what a relief, Now the wait for payment! Gonna start ringing every day!

Today we finally got told we are a rebuild!
Fuck me, what a battle to get what I pay my insurance for. Will be a house warming for sure.
Independant QS report happening in 3 weeks then pushing on a cash settlement.
Plans drawn up for new house and foundations costed..... $145k >.<
Trying my best to be in a new house for next winter, plan is to cash settle and rebuild and be mortgage free, fingers crossed numbers all work out.
cost to rebuild is around $2500 per square meter.
Contact Kevin McCloud and say you're going to be building a house shaped like a giant black dick!
Every decently-made object, from a house shaped like a giant black dick to a lamp post to a bridge, spoon or egg cup, is not just a piece of 'stuff' but a physical embodiment of human energy, testimony to the magical ability of our species to take raw materials and turn them into things of use, value and beauty.
Holy shit.....

Lucky that Range Rover was there to slow him down huh!
wow thats really expensive, down here you can get a vere very nice finished house, tiled, undelfoor heating, schist fireplaces, granite benches etc for under $1600sqm. (3604 foundations)
yep, the side NZ public don't see. I have still yet to get anywhere, once I get cash settled I have to go through design, consent, demolish & rebuild.
So in all honesty about 18 months from now, or 5 years after the 1st EQ I should be moving into a non fucked house. That's best case scenario, Im picking more like 24+ months.
Can't believe it's been 3 years.yep, the side NZ public don't see. I have still yet to get anywhere, once I get cash settled I have to go through design, consent, demolish & rebuild.

I'm surprised people in ChCh aren't more angry at the Government about it. EQC was undoubtedly swamped at the beginning, but there is no excuse for the ongoing shitstorm. I guess the Government has done a slick job of ensuring others get the blame for everything that going on.
i could be ALL done and dusted by this time next week....... cash offers being made to us, fingers crossed and hopefully can move on!
FUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YEAH!
On the home run now, offers made, just need to sign the papers and the deals are done!
Was that one as bad as it looks?I'm guessing there was another earthquake in CH?
Was a good weekend to not be in chch!
I'm kind of disappointed, was expecting the end of the world, all we got was another earthquake. It obviously wasn't spacemonkey day :/
