An animation detailing how the Rover lands on Mars.
-
Wow thats a really complicated landing sequence! I wonder why they didn't just go for the 'crash it into the ground surrounded by giant airbags' approach, surely has more room for error.
What the hell is that laser it shoots at the rock?
Has this rover been sent to Mars to destroy all life with its laser cannon?
-
Its a friken LAZER ...........

I was curious as to why you could hear the sounds in space!

It's too big and heavy to use airbags.

One month to go before landing.

I bet $5 that the landing goes wrong. I will laugh hardest, if the crawler bit is safe on the ground, the tether doesn't release, or catchs the crawler, and the "fly away" maneuver catapults the crawler to its demise.
-
It's a 40% success rate at best with current simulations, so no shock if some part of it's insane complexity fails
-
NASA has been pretty successful with all thier recent Mars missions. The last 10 years have been a success.
But understandably, landing a robot on a rock millions of kilometers away with a 7 minute delay in communcations makes for a hard job.
Russians have had the worst luck when it comes to Mars.

For anyone with a Kinect, there is a free game you can download off Xbox Live, where you can land the rover by waving your arms around and looking like an idiot.
It's short and easy, but lots of fun.

Nasa tv will have coverage right?
Yes
8 Hours to go.
The NASA Mars Odyssey orbiter (launched in 2001, named after the 1968 film '2001: A Space Odyssey'), will be in position to pick up the confirmation singnel that the rover has landed, it will then transmit back to Earth.
It will just be a confirmation signal at first, no images will come untill hours later.

-
What no live stream? WTF!
There will be live streams of the NASA control room and stuff.
There cant be any live streams of the landing on Mars because;
1. There's a 14 minute delay.
2. The bandwidth is limited, and required for important landing stuff.
3. There's no guy standing on Mars with a video camera.

It's amazing to see how far things have come over the last 50 years.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploration_of_Mars#TimeLine
Intrestly, it was Russia who first landed a rover on Mars, this one;
It was supposed to be deployed from the 1971 lander 'Mars 3'.
Mars 3 had the first successful landing on Mars, however 15 seconds after it landed it ceased transmission and the rover could never be deployed.
NASA's Viking 1 landed successfuly 5 years later.

There are a few, but bandwidth it limited. Data can only be transmitted back when the Rover is within line of sight to Earth, or when an orbiter is in position to relay the signal.

Hmm I wonder if the dust on those solar? panels was expected to build up so quick. Looks to me like the gritty shit gets into everything, 2 years seems a long time to keep that thing running. I guess the previous lander kept going for ages though.

Curiosity doesn't have solar panels , it's nuclear powered. An advantage of that is it can operate during winter (the previous rovers had to park up for the winter)
Curiosity is powered by a radioisotope thermoelectric generator.
Radioisotope power systems (RPSs) are generators that produce electricity from the natural decay of plutonium-238, which is a non-fissile isotope of plutonium. Heat given off by the natural decay of this isotope is converted into electricity, providing constant power during all seasons and through the day and night, and waste heat can be used via pipes to warm systems, freeing electrical power for the operation of the vehicle and instruments.
-
Yea I added the ? cos I wasn't sure what they were, they just looked like solar panels... what are those panel looking things?
-
There are no panel looking things.
Those other pictures with solar panel looking things, were from the two previous rovers, which had solar panels.

Oh I thought the http://www.panoramas.dk/mars/greeley-haven.html was from the new rover, well that explains a lot about all the dust on it too.
That pic is from opportunity which has solar pannels, I gather the fact it can move around stops dust from building up too much, as its twin (spirit) got stuck and had to shut down once too much dust built up on it.
interestingly opportunity is still roaming around up there 30x longer than expected, spirit functioned 23x longer than expected.
at the press conference after curiosity landed they said that curiosity's components were tested to 3 lifetimes, but not to failure, the power source has a minimum life of 14 years.
if curiosity were to get stuck it might stay active for 20 years!
when I get to mars, first thing I'm going to do is go ride curiosity.
-
Oh I thought the http://www.panoramas.dk/mars/greeley-haven.html was from the new rover, well that explains a lot about all the dust on it too.
It's amazing that the Opportunity rover is still going, it's been on Mars for 8 years, It's solar panels are at 50% capacity atm due to the dust on them.
They thought after 90 days, ther rovers would stop working due to dust on the panels.
The reason it's lastest so long is because from time to time, dust devils come along and wipe up all the dust, leaving the solar panels clean again.

Funny how Curiosity actually does look like a gentleman with a monocle.
Noob scientists just need to add a small air compressor component to blast dust off the panels. Or give Curiosity a rag and go wipe them up.
-

~$3k per kg to mars.
Plus I dunno if it's worth compressing co2 using electrical energy from a solar pannel to blow dust off the same solar pannel, I think it's on the wrong side of the conservation of energy law....
or a rag? ok now I know you're taking the piss...
-
Opportunity proved they clearly don't need to do anything regarding dust on the solar panels. The rover's still operating after 8 years.
I'd imagine the death of Opportunity will come about due to one of the wheels failing, like what happend with Spirt. A failed wheel increases the chance it'll get stuck, and if it gets stuck and can't position it's solar panel towards the sun during winter, then it's doomed.
-
I guess they've changed the wheels design to make it more robust aswell, especially if the new rover is going to travel further. Hmm I would like a car that could go for 8 years on a battery.

Dents in the wheels?
You mean the tread?
They really should make the next rover with even more of a recognisable 'face'. I reckon in draws more interest from the general public if it seems like a real living creature. Makes us care about him completing his mission.

The same way we humans do. Put the camera on a rock, switch it to 10 second self timer, then quickly run back before it takes the photo.
It's a mosaic of 55 photos taken from its robotic arm (Mars Hand Lens Imager - MAHLI). It looks like the way they stiched the photos together, they were able to not show the robotic arm itself. However I think the shadow being cast on the front left wheel is from the robotic arm.

NASA spends too much time thinking about functionality and not enough thinking about looks.
I think NASA needs to employ a visual design team. They can draw and build an awesome looking robot, then the engineers have to figure out how to fit all the stuff inside it and send it to Mars.
Then perhaps the next rover could look like this:

NASA downplays discovery: http://www.smh.com.au/technology/sci-tech/life-on-mars-maybe-not--nasa-downplays-discovery-20121122-29r51.html
NASA downplayed talk of a major discovery by its Martian rover after remarks by the mission chief raised hopes it may have unearthed evidence life once existed on the Red Planet.
"John was delighted about the quality and range of information coming in from SAM during the day a reporter happened to be sitting in John's office last week. He has been similarly delighted by results at other points during the mission so far," spokesman Guy Webster said
.
"The scientists want to gain confidence in the findings before taking them outside of the science team. As for history books, the whole mission is for the history books," Webster said.
Scientists do not expect Curiosity to find aliens or living creatures but they hope to use it to analyse soil and rocks for signs the building blocks of life are present and may have supported life in the past.
The $US2.5 billion Curiosity rover — which landed in Gale Crater on the Red Planet on August 6 — also aims to study the Martian environment to prepare for a possible human mission there in the coming years.
US President Barack Obama has vowed to send humans to the planet by 2030.
