Its fun until you die after an epic 15 minute walk... Try a 45 minute crawl When you play BGE you have to learn to expect and accept that sort of thing. Getting past that barrier is probably the biggest problem new players have, as BH said. Its not easy of course and I still get frustrated from time to time but you adjust to the style of play and keep at it.

What you really want is Binoculars. I forget where ey are now, used to be about rank 4 or 5 I think.

You drop back to the mission/brigade interface where you can either respawn immediately using the same unit type (providing there are numbers available) or a different type. Alternatively, you can change to a different mission or brigade and try something different.
Getting back in only takes a few seconds though.
As Swampy says, joystick isn't neccessary but for aircraft you will definitely want one. I'd recommend it for ground vehicles too although there are a couple of very good keyboard bind sets you can download now.

Naval combat is by far the least developed aspect of the game. At present there are gunboats, Destroyers and freighters. Thats it.
Plans have been in the pipeline to add plenty more to the mix but the reality is that the navies have a very small area in which they can operate effectively and the largest part of it (the French/Dutch coast etc) is cut out of the war relatively early on regardless of whos winning. The rest consists of the river networks and once you are restriced to operating there you're looking at gunboats only.
So it always gets the short end for updates being pushed back despite the fact they have been promised for a very very long time.

Its one of the most challenging yet rewarding games you can play. Because you have to really work for each kill you get it, gives you alot of satisfation when you get one. Damn straight. My most satisfying kill would have to be downing a Hurricane with MG34 in the middle of the night while defending one of those towns in the northern islands (forget the name). The bugger had been strafing us back and forth for ages so it was nice to shut him up by ventilating the canopy as he swooped down for another run. We had about 40 ground troops and limited air support but managed to fight off 3 British paradrops and a sustained naval bombardment; the Stukas were a beautiful sight after the Destroyers had been pounding us for over an hour. I later spent an hour real time sitting in a PzIV on the back of a transport ship en route to reinforce the island with armour. Was crazy, air and naval escort, engaged enemy aircraft and gunboats through the narrow channels before finally landing the tanks and having them roll over on the beach! Gah! Good times though. Those vids just make me want to login right now...can't get this damn desktop working soon enough

the thing that fucks me off about the graphics complaint is that no game is truely photo realistic yet.
and in any case when you're dogfighting in bge the graphics are the last thing on your mind. Too true. The same applies when you're engaged in a duel with tank 2km away. I'm glad you're enjoying it so far Xtinct, its not for the faint of heart but if you can get past the initial brick wall of 'wtf' then it offers up some amazing gameplay opportunities. Of course mate you always have an open door policy here Poor old Bozza/Hoover, what number did he get? I still remember trying to revive him on Beach when I didn't know you could run out of needles. Never been a game as good as that since. I remember that, funny as heck once we worked out what the hell was going on. I forget what number he had...3 maybe? I think Happy was #4 but beyond that I forget, we had a fair few members by that point.

Theo is still over in Hamilton, should be catching up with him at some point since I'm now in Tauranga. Will probably be up to Auckland at some point too, may have to have a drink for old times sake Temp

Hey foxy, long time no see. Iv been playing ww2O off and on for awhile now.Probably the best fun iv ever had in a game.Graphics are mud but you don't really notice after awhile.Havn't played in about a year so don't know how things have improved.Might have to resign up and see. P.S where are all the old -101- hanging out these days foxman? Long time indeed! Things have improved greatly in the last year and with luck they will continue to do so. The old crew...not sure to be honest. Most are still scattered about the various forums here and there, bump into them every now and then heh. Unless you have a fair bit of spare time, I'd avoid it. Did some inf movements attacking a town, took me ten minutes to run there.... Did you try asking for a ride? Did you check to see if there were any mobile spawns closer? The game is a simulation so if you're after an action fix then you'd be best to look elsewhere. I remember one instance where myself and Lapp crawled towards an enemy FB in order to spot the fall of shells from our tanks and artillery further back. It took us about 40 minutes real time to get to a position where we could provide feedback and we lasted all of about 1 minute before a frenchie capped us in the back. On the other hand, battles around towns are often incredibly intense with multiple armour and infantry attacks from different directions, all while air support fights overhead. Plenty of AA and AT fire to keep people on their toes and when a Stuka finally slips through and lands a 500lb'der on the damn Matilda 2 that was guarding the armybase entrance...its pretty awesome. Manning the last remaning PaK38 in a town and trying to fend off an armoured column long enough for air support to arrive is a rather tense experience. So if you are willing to be patient and learn how the game works then you'll be treated to some amazing battle pieces. Otherwise, stick to BF2 or CoD4 or whatever other spam shooter is the prefered one this month.

There are/were a few kiwis in the game on the Allied side as the ANZAC squad, not sure how active they are in WW2O these days but you can find them here http://anzac.mdsnews.com/. I never interacted with them other than to shoot them since I play Axis but all accounts point to them being a good bunch. On a side note, CRS have recently landed a deal to publish the game in China which will hopefully mean more revenue for them to use improving the game in future.

I've played it on and off for about 4 years now and overall its brilliant. The combat is on a massive scale with proper combined arms maneuvers involving hundreds of players, all coordinated by a dedicated group of players that make up the high command unit. I've had some truly amazing experiences in the game and the changes/additions over the last year or so have vast improved the game further. Ping isn't a huge issue although it will rear its head from time to time with the odd instance of warping or rubber banding. However, the learning curve is steep and the player population is relatively small. Finding action can often take a long ( long) time although the interface has been improved to help players get into hot spots faster. The game enine is old and although its gradually being brought up to more modern specs, its not the greatest looking game. Its functional more than pretty but when you can engage a tank at a range of 6kms, prettiness takes a backseat to functionality very fast The benefit of a small player base is that they are incredibly helpful and new players are generally well looked after. The best thing to do is not load the game and try to play it like a regular online FPS as that will result in frustration very quickly. Combat is a mix of urban and rural centred on townships or cities. In a rural setting, you'll almost never see what kills you as the average range of engagement is around 250-350m and a prone person is actually really really small at that distance. Vehicles are more obvious but of course deadly at far greater ranges. Urban combat is only different in the ranges, you'll still get plugged by something you never see more often than not. Patience is the order of the day. Its definitely worth go with the 14 day trial and as long as you approach it with the mindset of a complete noob (ie don't think you know how to use certain weapons based on other games) then you'll find the learning curve easier to overcome. Take some time to read the player guides on the website and don't be afraid to ask questions in the game. Heres the best place to start: http://wiki.wwiionline.com/index.php/Main_PageIf you want to try out vehicles, heres an excellent guide on Panzers which demonstrates the level of accuracy. http://home.arcor.de/Jalik/pzguide/panzerguideeng.htmlI'm not active at the moment (dead desktop) but I'm happy to answer any questions that don't require an in-game response I can tell some pretty crazy stories of multi-crewed tanks and aircraft as well as some epic battles hehe.

I rather like the way he subtly (and somestimes not so) sneaks in some scathing commentary regarding the US on a semi-regular basis.

ya reckon? imo he has way more charisa than that other guy If you equate the number of swear words one can cram into a short space of time as being 'charisma' then yes. However, if using the proper definition then I think that guy had all the charisma of your average rock. That swears a lot. Yahtzee is clever in the way he puts his stuff together. He doesn't appear on screen so calling him charismatic perhaps isn't a particularly good description. At least he doesn't rely on extensive swearing to get a few cheap laughs because he doesn't actually have anything of substance to say.

hehehe check this guy out...
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/20300.html Thats just too try hard. He relies on swearing for the 'humour' whereas Yahtzee uses wit and is actually funny.

I still think his Halo 3 review is the most accurate one out there. I love posting the link to that one just to piss of Halo fans who can't handle an alternative view point

all those games vonn said are budget games made for crappy computers Dear god are you retarded?! System Shock 2, NOLF and Scrapland are not 'budget games made for crappy computers'. Have you ever played them? Do you even know when they were made? Do you have any idea what you are talking about at all? If you did know what you were talking about then you would be well aware that SS2 and NOLF are 2 of the most highly regarded games in PC history. By both gamers and critics alike. Scrapland is more recent and not as highly regarded but it is by no means a 'budget game made for crappy computers'. Honestly, the idiocy of some people never ceases to amaze me.

Darwinia is a great game. It may look 'crap' but personally I think it plays a damnsight better than COD2. Its a unique concept for a start...not like 'lets take a best selling game, give it new graphics and then shuffle the campaigns around a bit...ooooo! Its 100% new'. Yeah right.
Sure it was fun and all but man...talk about the same shit over and over. I actually got bored and I haven't bothered to finish it.
