one random thing I want to try is to see how well it works with a PC xbox controller playing some (lightweight) steam games. It could come in handy for some casual gaming when on holiday

I dont really need a full laptop, i am already running Win8 on my desktop, and my phone is a Lumia 920. So the Surface Pro seems like a pretty natural choice to me.

Nice work on the PR.
Its getting about time I go for another personal record on deadlifts. The other day I did 140kg x 5, 160kg x 4, 170kg x 3, 180kg x 3 and 190kg x 2.
My current deadlift PR is 200kg.
Doing high reps deadlift is hard; one of the few times i went for reps i got 120kg for 21, which I have no plans to do again.

I am currently employed as a software developer - about 2 years into my current job (first one out of uni).
Background: Before I did computer science, i did a psychology degree, which ended up being basically a waste of time. After psych I did a 1 year Graduate Diploma in CompSci from UoA - my math was abit rusty and some papers can be tough to get started on (e.g. 3d graphics with matrix transformations, etc) but once you get up to speed, they arent too hard, but you will need to study.
Moving from a compsci degree into the software industry I have realised that in compsci, they teach you how to code, but they dont teach you how to make software. Working in a team to deliver a product requires a whole new skill-set that compsci doesnt teach you.
As for using my compsci degree in my day to day work, I wouldnt say that that I use my computer science skills very much. I have yet to need to analyze any algorithms or anything of that nature. In fact, I work with afew people who don't have compsci degrees, and it doesnt have any effect whatsoever.
Basically, a compsci degree/any other programming qualification helps get your foot in the door, but once you are in, then it doesnt really matter.

tbh, how can the catholic church be in denial about joseph sleeping with mary when they were married. at that time period, to state the contrary would have been absurd.
btw, i thought the billboard was gold. that guy used to be the vicar at St. Andrews in epsom when i used to go to church.
on another note, one thing ive never understood is that jesus is supposedly the prophet promised through the line of david (i.e. from joseph), but jesus isnt related to joseph at all... can anyone explain that to me?

im watching the closeup segment now. I think its hilarious when asking if there is a stigma about atheism, the host (his name eludes me) says in an aside to the rev. "with all due respect." If i were being interviewed, i would have challenged the host by asking him why he would feel the need to say that, unless identifying yourself as atheist would somehow be taken to be an insult to whoever the fuck she is..
too bad he didnt, would have got the point across far more clearly than his shit about rational enquiry.

which leads to the next issue. If heaven is such a great place why dont christians just kill themselves? Why bother hanging around on this crumbling world when paradise is one high cliff away? it used to be a problem... suicide didnt used to be a sin, the peasants thought "well things are crappy here, but when i die i go to paradise" so they went and killed themselves. The nobles and the clergy werent too pleased about having their sheep kill themselves, so voila, suicide becomes a sin and people stop killing themselves because they wont go to paradise.

just to dissect this part:
Firstly it requires you to not lose anything by believing, i would argue that this is not the case and you lose a lot e.g. a life free from superstition - with the likelihood of a god being so close to zero your expected gain from believing is quite small.
the second part is you need to do more then believe to get salvation, there would be a cost in believing - going to church, interacting with people, donations etc
thirdly: There is not universal agreed way to get salvation across the religions - the fact that you would have to pick one and hope for the best eats into your odds again.
you are best to be an atheist - at least you will be right and be able to think freely fourthly: any god that you do pick, and hope its the right one, would have to value dishonest belief over honest skepticism. If you dont believe in something, but just go through the motions of believing just to get some reward at the end, then any all knowing god would just call you a fraud.
