TL;DR. having a HDD plugged into most Asus routers means your sharing all your files with the internet without knowing.

Quote
researcher Kyle Lovett said he went public only after privately contacting Asus representatives two weeks earlier and getting a response that the reported behavior "was not an issue."

lol "yeah, we know anyone can just type ftp://<your ip here> and access all your files, but its not an issue"

what'd you recommend as cheap + grunty?

might be getting one in the next week or two;
flatmate moving out – will the modem go with? tune-in next week

Router != Modem

If you don't already, should have a separate modem and router, with the modem operating in bridge mode.

Will do for the router.. if you want to spend more there are nicer ones.

Modem depends on what sort of connection you have.. ADSL? VDSL? assuming not fibre or shit would be supplied.
