My girlfriend wanted me to start this game that she plays online called "GaiaOnline" so i went and had a look at the forums before i did anything..was not good..found a gaming forum so was thinking i'd find shit like CoD4,BFBC2 etc..but no it was about games like Legends of Zelda,Ragnarok shit like that..THEN i went to the computer tech forums they have and found one about a question involving ATI Raedon 5750 and the 5770..and this was the response from some little kids    "The other numbers indicate the power, not the age. In fact usually the highest-powered cards come out first to show off, followed by the lowest (as they improve yields to make more parts for the cards).

So yes, the 5770 is better than the 5750, but only by about 20% or so."

There is no way in hell i am playing such a retarded online game with people like this..what do you think..am i being too harsh or should i try it out..keep in mind its for kids aged 12-16..and has 20+ year olds on it.

This thread is about GaiaOnline.

GaiaOnline appears to be an advertisment funded, forum based, animal crossing style online game/social networking site. It is very similar design to the proposal for a game in the GetSome programming competition thread:

How about we design and/or write a game for our forum?

Something web based which members could log into and it uses, I dunno, their post count, sign-up date, title, and reputation to build that person 'stats'.

People could compete with each other in categories, similar to the way our forum is split up into subjects and sub-forums. Earning 'points' or 'wins' would let you gain custom titles and competitions could be held weekly so a person could hold, I dont know, "Leader of the Christchurch Treehouse of Awesome" for a week or something.

Could even have regional titles. Could have 'thread quotes of the week'.

The benefit of this is that it gives people a sense of achievement. The drawback would be the reputation thing since that is more of a popularity contest.


Another benefit is that non-members would be able to see the games in progress and may become interested in joining. Even better: The 'Forum Help Threads' may actually be read so that people requesting bans may place them in the relevant forum!

Pigs may also start to fly and I can fly a winged marshmallow back to the sherbert kingdom.

After re-reading my seemingly stupid idea, this 'reputation spending' idea at least has merit. We have people in the forum who have already clocked their reputation and have no way to spend it, leading to what all player run economies suffer from: Inflation!

Spending reputation to change your avatar or gain a title, even if temporarily, would give a pretty big sense of achievement. Like all those strange people on Starcraft 2 who have the Kerrigan avatar or the M1911 pistol in BC2.

That is about the only clear idea I have. The other ideas such as 'best thread post' need some form of liking similar to digg or youtube.

A Milestone achievement system due to posts would be good, possibly Posts x Karma , With an equal system for negative rep, So people who strive for negative rep will still achieve the same, but evil doer's with say, 100rep who gets a neg rep would suffer, where as someone with -400 rep, who gets neg rep would benefit.

We COULD have a currency, originally made of Posts x Rep, but could be slowly depleted without the actual posts or rep depleting. The points would have to be based off Posts, with the rep being multiplied to the end result.

in this next example... 100 rep will be equal to 1.

So if you had

10 posts
100 rep

you would have 10 points. (10x1)

You spend 2 on a custom title for a week

You now have

10 posts
100 rep
8 points

but then I rep you for posting that funny picture in Random Images.

But say I was a rep giant and repped you by 19 rep.

You have
11 posts
119 rep

and now we have 1.19 x 11 = 13.09
Rounded down, thats 13 (herp derp)
minus the 2 points from that spend, and you have 11 points. thats 2 extra points

and just to do another example

Someone else (who is also a rep giant) reps you 19 again, whilst you have the same amount of posts.

You now have

11 posts
138 rep

Your points are now 1.38*11 = 15.18, rounded down, 15.
annnnnd minus the 2 points from that spend before, you have 13 points. Without posting, your points have increased.

How this will work the same way with negative rep? no f**king clue.

What is quite interesting is that I have found a forum which allows users to disable reputation


The idea probably wouldnt work here. People would be forced to spread the abuse via posts, which is interesting in and of itself because Post Count is usually more respected than actual reputation.


Maybe we should replace Rep with Achievements instead?
