wow heres an oldy. 2007 lahar on whakapapa side of ruapehu. had to sneak past a squad of police men to get to it, mate took the photo on shitty camera phone as the cops had just seen us and there wasnt time to get the good one out haha

What a wee cutie, ben

Early last year I was fortunate enough to accompany a MSc student on a coring trip to Otago. We cored two peat swamps with a 'D-Corer' which is a hand corer. The core is extracted as a half-round and the method involves two holes next to each other , alternating between holes for coverage.
The core lengths we obtained were 2.4 metres and 4.1 metres (hitting the silt layer beneath the peat) and were obtained from Clarks Junction in Taeri, and swampy summit above Dunedin (a peat swamp on top of the hill, near the Radar outpost for the airport. Sam (the Student) is investigating the onset of grassland to try and get some handle on the response of vegetation to climate, and how this relates to the present. To aid him in this he is extracting pollen and plant phytoliths. Fascinating stuff!

These then get wrapped up and stored in a fridge until needed. They are photographed again, logged, and then subsamples are taken for investigation.
