Technically, at least three of those guys professed to being Deists, but it doesn't take much context to figure out that it was a cover for atheism in a time when it was still illegal to blaspheme under common law which wasn't repealed until 2008. :eyecrazy: :finger:

We ended up going back to his place and fooling around. After too much missionary (and nothing else) I asked if I could get on top. Guy said, "no way, one god, one position!" I laughed, but he was totally serious. So no more than 30 seconds later I was like, "I'm sleepy, I'm gonna go home." Got dressed, and left.

Yeah.

turns out jesus wants us to assault childrem

Turns out not - the verse he is referring to is actually from Proverbs. In fact Jesus wants us to obey the law ("pay unto Caesar what is Caesars" etc), and in the case of NZ the law states that hitting anyone with an alkathene pipe is assault. Thus, Jesus would say "Don't hit your son with an alkathene pipe", which is the opposite of your post.

Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all week.

Seriously though, we get it - people who believe in a god use that belief to justify some pretty messed up stuff. I think we all agree on this now and can stop posting every time it pops up.

Actually, I don't remember the last time I saw a religious message advertised on the side of a bus. Plus, if there is significant complaints from the public then maybe they are forced to do something about it legally.

Oh, and as for science V religion argument - an old man once told me that science is like a shark and religion is like a lion. They're each King in their respective environments, but a shark is useless on dry land, and a lion is useless in the ocean.

This idea of non-overlapping magesteria isnt new. Nietsche stabbed it in the face with 'Got is tot', Wittgenstein poured cement on the idea by declaring that there are no philosophical problems and that the metaphysical language game will never and can never impact the physical world, rendering it meaningless/nonsense.

Here is a fairly long but clear video about the issue:

The Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in their efforts to rationalise the Bible found that it was impossible. Once you removed all things miraculous, you ended up with a very short book dealing mainly with genealogy and some very insightful philosophical musings on the nature of humankind.

You cant walk ten feet in Theist land without tripping over at least one miracle

good old NOMA. Richard Dawkins blew it out of the water in the God delusion but i especially like his point how religion rejects any scientific evidence against god as unusable due to NOMA but if science were to prove gods existence they would go crazy in promotion of this scientific evidence. Hypocrites.

Speaking of Dawkins, did anyone see him speak?

I saw him on the news and he seemed like a bit of a twat, to be honest.
I respect his viewpoint and everything, but he just comes across like an aggressive, entitled prick.

A trait shared by anyone who feels strongly enough about their world view that they have to insist others are wrong. Fortunately they put a cross on top of most of the buildings where this happens to warn people. Unfortunately Dawkins falls outside this warning system.

Quote
Ratzinger is the perfect pope
"Should Pope Benedict XVI be held responsible for the escalating scandals over clerical sexual abuse in Europe?"

Yes he should, and it's going to escalate a lot further, as more and more victims break through the guilt of their childhood indoctrination and come forward.

"Should he be investigated for how cases of abuse were handled under his watch as archbishop of Munich or as the Vatican's chief doctrinal enforcer?"

Yes, of course he should. This former head of the Inquisition should be arrested the moment he dares to set foot outside his tinpot fiefdom of the Vatican, and he should be tried in an appropriate civil - not ecclesiastical - court. That's what should happen. Sadly, we all know our faith-befuddled governments will be too craven to do it.

"Should the pope resign?"

No. As the College of Cardinals must have recognized when they elected him, he is perfectly - ideally - qualified to lead the Roman Catholic Church. A leering old villain in a frock, who spent decades conspiring behind closed doors for the position he now holds; a man who believes he is infallible and acts the part; a man whose preaching of scientific falsehood is responsible for the deaths of countless AIDS victims in Africa; a man whose first instinct when his priests are caught with their pants down is to cover up the scandal and damn the young victims to silence: in short, exactly the right man for the job. He should not resign, moreover, because he is perfectly positioned to accelerate the downfall of the evil, corrupt organization whose character he fits like a glove, and of which he is the absolute and historically appropriate monarch.

No, Pope Ratzinger should not resign. He should remain in charge of the whole rotten edifice - the whole profiteering, woman-fearing, guilt-gorging, truth-hating, child-raping institution - while it tumbles, amid a stench of incense and a rain of tourist-kitsch sacred hearts and preposterously crowned virgins, about his ears.

Why is this accepted though?
Whats wrong with just sharing your opinion without being a complete dick about it?
If people don't agree with your world view, thats their right.

Personal freedom ftw.
