Eastern Seaboard at Night

An Expedition 30 crew member aboard the International Space Station took this nighttime photograph of much of the Atlantic coast of the United States. Large metropolitan areas and other easily recognizable sites from the Virginia/Maryland/Washington, D.C. area are visible in the image that spans almost to Rhode Island. Boston is just out of frame at right. Long Island and the New York City area are visible in the lower right quadrant. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are near the center. Parts of two Russian vehicles parked at the orbital outpost are seen in left foreground.

This image was taken on Feb. 6, 2012.

I look at the ISS some nights, I look at photos like this too. I used to think "How can city lights be THAT bright and THAT concentrated that you can see them from space? It seemed like a have, like it was too far away. For years I thought like this, like the distance wast too vast, how could it all be so close until I saw this image, which I'm sure has been posted.

They're not far away at all really are they? You imagine you could almost see houses from up there, or people waving.

But anyway, that sort of shit is not my MO around here, have some lols with your morning coffee...

If it's visible from space it is visible from space, there is no atmosphere up there to absorb any of the photons. So if you are close enough to make out such features then you will see them. I would imagine that if there were cities of similar magnitude on the moon you would still see the light from Earth during a new moon, and vice versa. I can't imagine why you wouldn't.

I don't know if I would use the word "epic" to describe a video of an obviously fatal accident. :-\

Seems a bit insensitive.

Totally instant extinction. I wonder how many other vehicles crashed as well from that.

On a lighter note, an old Crex Clan group photo...

Random Images

This composite image shows the distribution of dark matter, galaxies, and hot gas in the core of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 520, formed from a violent collision of massive galaxy clusters.

The natural-color image of the galaxies was taken with NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope in Hawaii.
