The Avondale is similar to the Huntsman isn't it? If so they aren't venomous. Oh well.

North Island only by the looks of it, they haven't spread far from Avondale.

I feel sorry for anybody encountering one indoors! Imagine hitting it only for it to get up and run for you!

Harvestman spiders always do that to me, resulting in their death...

and i think NZ's only "venomous" spider is the Katipo

The Avondale spiders are the ones they used in the movie Arachnophobia - they played the part of all the smaller spiders that caused all the havoc. Normal tarantula spiders were used as the really big spiders.

And yeah, Katipo are the only native poisonous spiders, as far as I know.

Don't forget the Red back & white tail spiders, both are aussie imports I think.

White-tails are everywhere, infesting NZ. I see one on a weekly basis.
Seen a Katipo twice when I was working in the forestry, it's supposely quite rare to actually see one, ugly little buggers.

Never seen a Red back.

Have any of you seen Giant water spiders? Now they are big, REAL big. Old logs & clay banks are good for finding some big bastards too.

Lived in the country most of my life all sorts of weird & wonderful insects running around.

There is a small population of them in the lower island, I read about it a while back on a few sites.
