A Snapshot of Sea Ice
http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb85/astrodoberman/481308main1_sea-ice-670.jpg
Random Images

The Arctic Ocean is covered by a dynamic layer of sea ice that grows each winter and shrinks each summer, reaching its yearly minimum size each fall. While the 2010 minimum remains to be seen, NASA's Aqua satellite captured this snapshot on Sept. 3........................As the sea ice nears the 2010 minimum later this month, look for images and analysis from NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center, in Boulder, Colo.

A Humpbacked Dinosaur Has a Unique Story to Tell

http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb85/astrodoberman/OBOX-2-popup.jpg
Random Images

Researchers have discovered the most complete fossil of a meat-eating dinosaur from Europe in Las Hoyas, Spain. Curiously, it is humpbacked. The study appears in the journal Nature. Named Concavenator corcovatus, the dinosaur belongs to the theropod family. In most ways, the dinosaur is not unusual, and it shares many characteristics with other medium-size theropods.

But the humplike structure on the 20-foot creature has previously never been seen in a dinosaur.

“We have no idea if this hump had flesh tissues; if so it could have been a fatlike deposit,” said Francisco Ortega, a biologist at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia and the study’s lead author. “Or if it was decoration, it was used as a display.”

The hump probably looked similar to that seen on some cows today, he said.

The fossil also suggests that the dinosaur had bony bumps on its limbs, possibly structures from which feathers protruded. The dinosaur lived during the Early Cretaceous period, about 130 million years ago. Earlier dinosaur fossils have shown evidence of feathers, and birds are now generally considered to be dinosaur descendants.

He and his colleagues uncovered the dinosaur in a 2003 dig, but the assembly and analysis took seven years. The complete fossil can be seen at the Museum of Science in Castilla-La Mancha, Spain.

Hybrids May Thrive Where Parents Fear to Tread

NEW BREEDS Hybridization examples include a zorse (zebra-horse) named Eclyse.

On May 15, 1985, trainers at Hawaii Sea Life Park were stunned when a 400- pound gray female bottlenose dolphin named Punahele gave birth to a dark-skinned calf that partly resembled the 2,000-pound male false killer whale with whom she shared a pool. The calf was a wholphin, a hybrid that was intermediate to its parents in some characteristics, like having 66 teeth compared with the bottlenose’s 44 and the 88 of the false killer whale, a much larger member of the dolphin family..................The discovery of hybrid species and the detection of past hybridizations are forcing biologists to reshape their picture of species as independent units. The barriers between species are not necessarily vast, unbridgeable chasms; sometimes they get crossed with marvelous results.

Last night, the sun's magnetic field near Earth tipped south. This opened a crack in Earth's magnetosphere. Solar wind poured in and fueled a magnificent display of arctic Northern Lights:

Random Images

Thilo Bubek took the picture not far from Tromsø, Norway. "We had some nice auroras," he says, with what can only be described as Norwegian understatement. "The clouds and calm sea contributed to a photogenic scene."

This is the time of year when south-pointing magnetic fields from the sun frequently puncture our bubble of protection against the solar wind. High latitude sky watchers should be alert for equinox auroras.

This high forward oblique view of Rima Ariadaeus on the moon was photographed by the Apollo 10 crew in May 1969. Center point coordinates are located at 17 degrees, 5 minutes east longitude and 5 degrees, 0 minutes north latitude. The Apollo 10 crew aimed a hand-held 70mm camera at the surface from lunar orbit for a series of images of this area.

An archaeological complex full of typical Chachapoyan round builds has been discovered in the district of San Juan de Lopecancha, province de Luya in the Amazonas region. The discovery was made by local explorer and photographer Martin Chumbe in a joint expedition with the district's mayor, owner of the land.

The complex, named Atumpucro for the hill it sits on, is located on the western side of the Utcubamba river a two hour drive and 40 minute walk from the modern city of Chachapoyas. The site appears to have an extension of more than two hectares and about 150 homes in a good state of preservation.

"It is a beautiful place. All the houses have rectangular windows, niches and friezes all around. The houses are build upon large terraces and there are impressive walls about 50 metres long and 3 metres high," Chumbe explains.

Located between the tourist sites of Revash and the citadel of Kuélap, it is thought the site could become a new tourist attraction. From the top visitors would enjoy views over the valley of the river Utcubamba and the district of Jalca Grande.

"The architecture and the skilled work that has gone into building the site has allowed the building to survive for all this time despite their precarious location", Chumbe adds.

"It's now up to the authorities to see to it that the site is conserved and protected".

Sept. 15, 2010 -- This prehistoric bird weighed about 64 pounds and belonged to a group known as pelagornithids -- birds characterized by long, slender beaks bearing many spiny, tooth-like projections. It's now thought that 17 feet may be close to the maximum wingspan that can be achieved by a flying bird because of weight and other complications.

the photograph resonates powerfully with a number of the images that were prominent during the coverage of 911. These all included women covered in dust or blood and often being helped as they walked, staggered, or were carried while emerging from the scene of the catastrophe.

Looking at the way shes grimacing I'd say shes crying or similar, that angle of her head vs the camera lens makes it look like a smile, thats all.
