Astronomers have caught sight of an unusual galaxy that, like a lighthouse, has illuminated new details about a celestial "sandbar" connecting two massive islands of galaxies. The galaxy, which is wandering through this sandbar, or filament, has twin lobes of material jetting from its center that are bending backwards as they sweep through the filament's hot gas. The findings are a result of observations made primarily by NASA's Spitzer Space Telescopes and the Very Large Array radio telescope near Socorro, N.M.

Wow, that's beautiful. It reminds me of two guys in my class at high school. Both incredibly talented, but one guy was a prodigy, or genius, or whatever fits.
The older he got, the better he got due to spending every waking minute putting works out.

He spent years painting animal bones, he got his Bachelor of Arts from AUT I think, then switched to painting birds once he came to the realization that no-one wants a giant jaw bone hanging in the hallway.

Thing about his stuff was that he practiced hyper-realism. Not just photo-realism, but hyper-realism. Paintings, sketches and digital works that look real.

This is the best example of photo-realism I could find in a pinch...a painting by Glenray Tutor

And this, found on the Hyper realism wiki page (I disagree that it is hyper-realism);

Check this stuff here...paints and pencils thank you very much.

Our high school teacher told us that a master artist was watching over Michaelangelo's shoulder as he painted at the school where he was training.
The master saw a fly on the canvas, and when he went to brush it away, he smudged it, as Michaelangelo had painted it there. The Master swore never to paint again having seen such technical skill. Probably a wives tale, but very inspiring to a group of young hopefuls.

My old schoolmates name is Adam Clarke, so if you are in a position to buy one of his works, I urge you to do so. They are amazing. (Sorry, no online examples to show).

Catapults. Coolest thing ever is a F-18 catapulted from the deck of a carrier.

What are the drawbacks to vertical take-off and landing as opposed to being rocketed off the end of a ship? Serious question.

Probably the cost of redesigning a few thousand planes

there is a lot of thrust required to take off vertically. this results in a large amount of engine power, which chews through fuel. to have the same range as catapult launched aircraft, it needs to carry more fuel and less payload. These aircraft also tend to be smaller in an effort to save weight

planes like harriers are incredably usefull for small ships/areas, but their payload and range is compromised compared to the bigger jets like the F-18

Also I think speed an maneuverability is compromised somewhat with making the Harrier less formidable in a dogfight. Although I have heard of pilots using the thrust vectoring while flying in different ways to gain advantage.

Must have pic:

The Harrier can't go supersonic but I've heard stories of awesome maneuverability and acceleration. Apparently it is massively overpowered for it's size.

A harrier of another kind and more likely to be found in NZ;

As mentioned, vastly reduced payload and performance.

In reality, the Harrier rarely takes off or lands vertically (i.e. using the engine to offset 100%+ of mass). Instead they will use running take offs and landings so that some mass is lifted by the wings allowing greater MTOW.

The HMS Illustrious with its 'ski jump' was a cunning way to try and do this

In terms of ducted nozzles like the Harrier, you'll always loose efficiency by redirecting a jet of air away from its incoming direction- A conventional jet engine (axial flow) through puts air/exhaust in more or less a straight line and so is more efficient than the Harrier who has to redirect air/exhaust.

I get the sentiment, but it is made of fail.
Directed statement without taking into account personal choices and lifestyle.
To state " there is no such thing as...." is to take an absolutionist stance and therefore instantrly void any wargarbble swardgabble.
