Yet strangely, her contribution to the betterment of mankind exceeds yours by a factor of one billion. It is a mysterious and strange world we live in.

Oh? Apart from knighting people what contribution does she offer these days that isn't monetary?

"Normally, tax dollars pay only for the costs associated with the  Governor-General and Queen's Representative as instruments of the  Queen's authority, including travel, security, residences, offices,  ceremonies, and the like. Supporters of the monarchy argue it costs New  Zealand taxpayers only a small outlay for royal engagements and tours,  and the expenses of the Governor-General's establishment. Monarchy New  Zealand states "[t]his figure is about one dollar per person per year",  about $4.3 million per annum.  An analysis by the Republican Movement of the 2010 Budget shows the  office of Governor-General costs New Zealand taxpayers about $7.6  million in ongoing costs and $11 million for Government House upgrades, a  total of $18.6 million."

I'm not a monarchist, but the cost is no reason to change.  If we were a republic, we would still need to have a head of state (a President or Governor-General) and the cost wouldn't change downward.

Anyone see how much NZ spent on getting Harry & William here for the RWC 2011? Then they did a no-show?

Something like $12M. (Booking extravagant accom. food, caterers, transport, free gifts & shit).

We already pay for a Prime Minister, so the cost would come down.
The governor general is just some fatcat paid to mooch. We don't need him.

Generally a country has both a head of state, and a prime minister.

So we need the royals because we have to have a head of state anyway.
Even though they don't do anything.

If we got rid of the royals then we would have a President and a Prime Minister, so no savings there

Ummmm, sorry your argument seemed to be that we would save money not having a governor-general, whereas I was pointing out that we would just have to spend the money on keeping a president or whatevz. I don't think I said anything about royals or nothing.

You are making assumptions about the political system that would be the alternative (US has no Prime Minister) and how much it would cost.
Regardless, at least the person who is the head of state actaully does something.
It's OK to love the royals, you can take a big steaming dump on William's chest for all I care. But I don't see them as any more than moochers.

Errr yeah I was making an assumption, that's why I said I was.

Once again, I said nothing about royals, don't really know where the aggro is coming from. Or are you making some kind of assumption?
