top one would be from a documentary on the air crash at tenerife airport in the carany islands back in 79 i think it was - 500+ ppl died when 2 747s collided on the runway

And all because the Spanish thought it would be a good idea to redirect all flights to a small airport on a hill on a small island that was prone to fog and had absolutely no radar equipment...

That and KLM worked on a completely different visibility safety system...

And that the KLM Captain only got ATC and decided to go ahead and take off anyway...

Also that the KLM first officer didn't keep up communication with Pan Am and pretty much ignored the tower's (admittedly confusing) warnings...

But it was nobody's fault... Right? :sly:

I believe the majority of fault should lie on the Captain of the KLM flight, surely common sense should have prevailed and he should have waited till he was 100% sure the runway was clear before attempting a take off in those conditions.

Visibility was reduced to 10 metres (Yes 10 metres ladies and gentlemen:eek:) and the KLM captain had been sitting on the runway for ten minutes after receiving ATC (After Takeoff Clearance) waiting for runway (also called Final) clearance. In short he got impatient with the tower (which only had two people manning it to take the entire flow of all air traffic that side of Europe :eek:) and made the decision that there must have been a mistake in the clearance instructions... he was wrong.

Poor undies!!


About that crash.. in the end it came down to the tower control guys. They apparently could see what was what on that foggy day. The pilots just had to trust them.
Reading that, see the heat was that intense it cleared over 1 square kilometer of fog from around that crash site. O_O

Although I have to say, being in the process of becoming a pilot, Instrument landings (which is what the Captain would have been forced to do on arrival) SUCK. They REALLY REALLY SUCK.

Another factor on the crash was KLM's overtime policy: You finish on time or you get fired.
