Yeah there still seems to be a lurking red repper somewhere.

Anyway, that photo of Paul with Dad could be explained by his Dad standing on tiptoes to be seen over the top of Mum's head, notice feet are chopped off in the photo so you can't really see. A rough eye measure puts the old man at about the same height then.

I maybe wrong but I think that's pre-WW2 criteria even WW1. The Germans helmets have the extra long neck cover, though its hard to see the lugs they had on the side as well. In WW2 they were similar but the helmets didn't have such a long neck drop. On that, if it is in fact the WW1 era or there abouts, Id say that was the Maxim MG 08-15 light machine gun, a portable version of the famous Maxim (Spandau) machine gun ironically developed in the USA of all places.

My God, assuming the photos are separated by a few years of hair growth, it's like his dad has aged and lost a few inches in height. Or the whole family standing on a surface you can't see.

I don't believe it, personally, but I find it interesting. some people have done a shirtload of work on this and there are some intriguing, but also hilarious comparisons....I've previously made my stand on this purposefully vague ;)
