2008 Office on Mac is sexy.

get off the bandwagon.

There's not alot of other alternatives, so have fun writing documents/spreadsheets/slideshows in Text Edit.

Open office, I guess it also depends what you're doing as well aye. Like do you run xp within your mac?

Powerpoint & Outlook are tolerable but word? Yeah right, inDesign is the real deal.

You're a graphic design student? Saw your sexy desktop

Oh pipe down. There is nothing wrong with MS Word. Sick of so many people jumping on the "hate MS" campaign. I have MS Office 2008 on my MacBook Pro and it runs/looks better than it's Windows counter-part.

InDesign for word processing?  I don't even know what to say to that.

Not a student. graduated last year.

InDesign for word processing over Microsoft/Open office word any day, with InDesign you have so much more freedom to create professional documents.

We've never had a seriously large client come through this printery with a Word created document for mass production. The job bags always come through with InDesign created documents

Sure word is fine for joe the plumber, but for anyone that actually knows how to use InDesign, and then proceeds to use word knowing full well word puts shame to any kind of document creation, really just feeds the problem.

I don't personally hate Microsoft, i just dislike things they have done like word and publisher, the whole "why learn how to make a aesthetically pleasing document when you can save hours making rubbish looking documents with the same content."

'Grats on the graduation :)

Try dealing with a Manager of one of the countries biggest construction workers when he comes to you wanting a 12 page A3 booklet designed in PowerPoint in 4 days time (including the weekend).

Don't blame the tools, blame the tradesmen.

I can create a pretty damn professional looking document in MS Word. I think the industry calls them Letter-Heads. Also, i am talking in terms of WORD PROCESSING, as in everyday use, not creating files that are going to go in a print run of 10,000 prints.

Try firing up inDesign every time you want to write a simple letter or essay. Bet you'll get sick of it.

Well effing duh. an MS Word file isn't a print-ready document. Your taking it out of context. That's like arguing what car is better, a Ferrari or a Land Rover then saying that the Ferrari is useless because you can't drive up Mt Everest in it.

Point taken, nice. We had that recently actually lol. An engineering place gave us a 25 page engineering mag made in word, had to pdf it and lay the pages into indesign, our rip kept spazzing over the word files! What a headache that was.

But i really do hear what you're saying in that last sentence, the tools are fine, so instead of blaming ms word, blame the ms word users who try to use it as a complete alternative to designing application like quark or indesign.

Yeah generally clients get the letterheads printed in mass then they over print in the office (because printing on the same paper twice generally fucks printers in case anyone wanted to know, so they're offset printed then they can be printed over digitally.) As for typing out documents myself, i'll use textedit/notepad and then import to InDesign. It may not be quicker then word but definitely have a lot more control eh.

LOL, that's excellent, and true. You're right. Although MS Word does do some very odd things when printing images from it (not just rgb to cmyk passing but other distortions.)
