I dunno, never needed to turn them above halfway. The sub can be heard easily even on low. I dunno what they'd be like in a room though as the rear speakers have never really been fully behind me, not enough room where I have my computer at the moment.
Wow are they that cheap now? Got mine for $100 round christmas time.

I got the X-230s because I'm not a fan of putting speakers in shitty places.

They're pretty good.
