Radio New Zealand National :boogie:

The above stuff is far from gangsta rap.
gangsta rap is really only a sub-genre of rap (which is a sub-genre of hip-hop).

Pharoahe Monch - Welcome To The Terrordome

A hip-hop cover, not a sample. Yes, a complete cover with same lyrics as the Public Enemy original. Fantastic cover tbh. A few original verses thrown in though but still great

Pharoahe's probably the best of all the MCs that were on Rawkus. I think all through the late 90s/ early 2000s his music was practically all I listened to. This guy and Black Thought must be the most underrated rappers to have come out from the 90s.

Strong use of feminine rhyming schemes (English literature term) doesn't make it light years ahead of other genres lyrically.
That said, it is a great song.
Rap focuses on strong storytelling and feminine rhyming schemes, mainly based around everyday urban life with a 4/4 beat and use of sampling, so it it from songs or made famous by Public Enemy, sound bytes and urban sounds.

maybe i should've said rap is light years ahead when it comes to storytelling? Maybe i don't listen to enough of other genres but from what I've heard, there are hardly ANY that are conceptually creative.

Actually, I challenge you to (without going into any technicalities), pick any genre and give me some lyrically creative songs. I bet for every song you can show me, I can point you to 5 rap songs.

And just as much as rap is 'mainly based around everyday urban life", country music is mainly based around the same concept. And so is Blues music.... Basically every genre has a common thread so I don't see what point you were making :)

Are you serious? :sly: how can you say that but then go on to state that you don't listen to other genres.. pretty ignorant tbh
you also go on to prove your own point wrong

I can guarantee that other peoples favorite genre will always be better than everyone else favorite genre
Rap imo is absolute crap, n word this, n word that.. bitch this bitch that .. I grew up ina tough hood bro .. gonna pop a cap in your ass if you wear a blue hat cuz im bloods bro

For instance I listen to alot of Black Metal - in particular Norwegian Black Metal; which tells the stories of Norse/Viking Myth ..

with lyrics from songs such as this gem from Falkenbachs song 'Heathen Foray'

Quote
"...In ancient times once rode across the land
A man unknown on a horse of untold grand,
Adorned his cape by thirty runes of gold
Of whom the tales since ages unknown told...

...The man arrived at the shore of sea
And gazed onto the nightly sky,
His ears could hear and his eyes could see
Two ravens dark as night passing by...

...In a distance far the thunder sounds
And lightnings reached the frozen grounds,
His breath ran fast, his heart pounded strong
As the day now came, awaited oh so long...

...Tears will fall and blood will soon be shed
When the dawn heralds the twilight of the day...
Then into battle they will ride with their swords in hand
For a heathenish foray...

...Countless miles he rode through ice and knee-deep snow
Over mountains 'till the landscape changed its face
So he at last arrived where winds blew strong and chill
Like a welcome to all those who trod this place...

...He in cape was wrapped, and with his hammer 'round his neck
He forced his way though he didn't see the path,
But he did not rest, 'till he had crossed this land of chill
And the storm had calmed, when he stood alone on the hill...

...His eyes could see the forest shining bright
And it's trees reflected solens golden light,
The sound of horns then reached his ears
To welcome him and take away his fears...

...From all their lands the kings, they came
With their retinue of countless men,
And the maiden in full Armour sat on their horses,
Winged, until the night began...

So he rested a while an recovered from his ride,
The horizon gleamed by the mighty northers light,
And the elder ones sang tales about the past,
Of their ancestors pride, that will forever last...

...As the darkness fell and gone was solens light
The silence ruled amongst the men of heathenpride,
Who gatheren in a mighty battle-line
And awaited their Gods to give the final sign...

Epic as fuck story telling imo.. the entire album this song is from tells you the story of Thor, Odin and other Gods.. in this particular song it is Thor hence the hammer around his neck.. and it is the gathering before 'Ragnarok' the end of the world.

You can work out the irony.
Hell, actually listen to say, I dunno, the rap I linked above.
I don't care if you don't like rap or any other genre, that's fine as long as you actually investigate it and not base it on stereotypes and ignorance.
Anyway, I've never heard "pop a cap in your ass" in any rap song tbh. Also funny enough, that type of music you describe about is actually made for 'white America' and is gangsta rap, which is a sub-genre of rap and not all of rap (there's many sub genres of rap e.g. G-Funk rap, popularised by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg and Southern rap, popularised by Outkast).

Eminem's lyrics are analysed in high school English for a reason. Fantastic lyricist in many ways. Fantastic storyteller, particularly The Marshall Mathers LP. Such a funny clever hard-hitting album with fantastic storytelling elements.
7th form English...mmmmmmm....teacher was female.......

I've seen many-a-time "oh I don't like rap but I like this rap song" meaning they discounted rap based on stereotypes and when they actually listened to a rap song...oh, it's not as bad as I thought....

Anyway:

Dashboard Confessional - So Long, So Long

Funny enough, proper emo music like above suffers from the same ignorance.
