Went away for part of the long weekend, had my first try at a timelapse of the sky. Turned out pretty average and way too short. But was a good learning opportunity. Using a 50mm 1.4f, found composition difficult with such a narrow lens.

Better viewed on youtube with larger video size.

awesome start though mate ... 50mm will always be hard in that aspect unless you have a large area to work with ie: .. some decent elevation
best off to use something like an 18-55 or the likes
depending on the time spacings on each shot the best place to start to get it flowing smoothly is to play at .03 of a second and go go forward till your happy (around 4 hours of shooting will produce around 1min 30 secs of footage)

I found that at .03 of a second things moved a bit fast so I set it to about .07 of a second
but you need to play around and see what looks good and how long you want the clip to be.
Time Lapse from up Cape Hill in Pukekohe
I started just after 6pm and took over 2000 photos in about 4.5 hours, 1 pic every 5 to 8 seconds,
when it was dark the exposure time got up to 6sec.

I used the prime because it is my fastest lens. I was in quite a dark area with little light pollution, and wanted to try and get as many stars as I could, but without them showing movement in each frame.
Went with iso 100, 1.4f, 10sec shutter, about 200 images for that 7 second video (rendered at 24fps). Next fastest lens I have is 18-55 3.5f, which when I tried once before to get some star photos resulted in trails rather than individual specs. Edited the raws to up the exposure a bit and played with the contrast. Original images were even darker.

Postal, your camera must have a huge count on its shutter.

Doesn't the A65 shoot quite noise free at ISO 800 - 1600?

lol had my new canon for hmmm 6 months or so and already close onto 16k shutter count ;)

http://www.wilmslowastro.com/software/formulae.htm

t
ake 60 seconds and divide it by the CENTIMETRE of your focal length ie 60 / 5 cen =   12 seconds  that is the length of time you can have your shutter open on a 50mm lens before the stars start to track in an image so the wide lens you use the longer you can have the shutter open before you start to get tracking :) so at 18mm its 33.3 seconds

when i shoot stars its usually at iso2000 @ f4 40-50 sec's on a 10mm lens iso 100 is too dark to be shooting stars :)

I've taken around the 36k make on this Canon 450D
and I bought it off my Father, god only know how many he took before I got it
(is there somewhere the camera will tell me the shutter count?)

I think there is an app you can get for canon that will tell you when you plug it in to your pc.

Awesome advices. Will try higher iso and a wider lens.

Going to try and shoot some fireworks displays too, given heaps are about to happen with 5th nov and all. Any tips? (I have never done it before).

try and keep your iso at around 400 shutter speed to around 1 - 2 seconds (depending on the fireworks quality otherwise youll end up with a load of smoke) and try to start with f5.6ish and adjust to suit :)

iso400, which was a bit high, plus focus was way off. Need another clear night.

the easiest way to shoot a startrail mate is to shoot a hundred or exposures @30 sec's a pop and stitch them  on ether photoshop or on star track software :) (stars will almost always be in focus (within reason) so always focus on the object closest to you or visible awesome start though mate :)

Yeah that is what I did :)

I think it was about 8 or 10 sec per exposure, and about 180 of them (as I made a timelapse too, which was super average).

Next clear night I will try again with lower ISO and better focus.

thought I would break the camera out tonight with a few shots of fireworks  - I still dont have a tri-pod so these were all just hand held shots

Will see about maybe getting a tripod over the weekend so when we do some more fireworks on Sunday hopefully I will take some better shots.

These are 2 I happen to have on my facebook, cleo is the cat, she was the queen of the house, she passed away a few years ago, I got a 6x4 print in a nice glass free standing frame for mum for xmas that year and she cried :( but the picture of cleo sits in my parents lounge by the TV, if she topples over during an earthquake it's considered large by my parents.

The dog is meg, she's a boarder collie-retriever and has a lot more grey around her nose these days.

I've got 3 more films to get developed from a trip on the southern transverse train thing, but it's been too pricy as a student, so I'll get those done this summer at some stage.

also your guys photos are amazing too :)
