What did I do wrong here?

I pretty much just played around with as many settings as I could for half an hour but still couldn't get the photo to look neat.

Fair enough, I didn't pick a very busy road, mainly so I could test out the technique, but when I first set up it was busy..ish, then it died down. Damn Adelaide traffic.

I had a few people offer me to come back to their place and take some photos of the cityscape from their roof, and trust me, in that area, there are some HUGE houses, however I wasn't so keen. They probably all had huge basements where they do live operations on people the kidnap.

night stuff, long exposure.

30sec or bulb, try run ISO 100-200 'IF" you can, do heaps of test shots cranking up the iso in steps till you get the desired result.

With that traffic sort of scenario, you may be better being slightly further away to avoid refractions/reflections directly into the lens, you can always crop the final image!

Long exposure noise reduction OFF

White balance, Flourescent normally give best result.

If you dont have a remote release use timer.

Yea, I had it set to bulb, the exposure length was 33 seconds (because the traffic stopped coming), going to have another shot tonight on a diff road

A few beetles I have found wandering around lately. Need to buy a macro lens, current one sucks for this purpose. One if a gold beetle, aspidomorpha most likely, other is black ground beetle, carabidae. I use them in my science classes. Plenty of carabids in NZ, never seen anything like a gold beetle there tho...closest I have come are the iridescent manuka beetles. If someone can get a high res picture of a huhu beetle that would be great. Ones online are generally crap.

sticky stuff on hand is mixture of honey and water for beetle to replenish energy with.

One of my students and a cicada. Much larger species here, around double the size of the largest green species found in NZ and black. I spend a fair amount of time outside catching things for biology class. Living in a concrete jungle most of the kids have no idea about their natural environment. One of my business aims here is to rectify that. This girl was afraid of aphids 6 months ago, now she happily grabs large species of Nephila (big nasty pseudo-poisonous spiders....large webs) out of their webs. I consider this a major victory in the war against cute things and Hello Kitty.
