Have a look at bridge cameras if you just want to get started.  My Panasonic DMC-FZ28 does straight RAW files as well as normal JPEGS so it gives you that ability to play with Raw files without breaking
your wallet on a full D-SLR. It also has the ability to screw filters on (56mm though which is a little expensive) so you can play with polar lens etc....
I bought mine for about $680NZ, but not sure how much you can get it for in Aus.

You can get into photography with any camera though, its mainly about finding the right subject and then getting the best composition.

this is what my brother bought and after i had a word with him he swapped it for a Canon 1000D within the week haha. 1000D is a very good entry level DSLR with the smaller price tag.  FZ28 is like a DSLS point and shoot, you have to wade your way through a menu and presets to change anything and the electrical viewfinder is completely pointless.

the view finder is pointless as you should be using the lcd anyway.  The view finder is very handy when taking shots in a bright environment.  The view finder is smaller though.
If i had the money i'd buy a 1000D, but with money constraints i opted for the FZ28.

Awesome photos though.

Why do people always say never to take photos into the sun? Sure it can make everything else look dark, but sometimes they look awesome.

Well the photos are not really good, as taken with a crappy camera.  The subject is fantastic, this is one big ass moth.  The camoflage on this thing was amazing, looked entirely like a leaf.  If you look carefully this moth has even developed "mossy" green parts to its leafy camo.

When it was flying you could see the black and orange stripes clearly, pretty animal.

Wow that really is amazing Smeg!

Well I was outside enjoying the sun in my backyard when I realised that it was a perfect opp for some photography, there was about five or six bees all buzzing around a Lavender bush, and some other bugs around a Daffodil bush.

Arguably the biggest pest of the day, constantly whining because she had just been washed and was itchy.

What shutter speed were you using then?  Really nice resolution on the bee.  Macro lens?

Uh, still getting used to all the terminology, but on the LCD the shutter speed is 3o" (3 milliseconds)

And the lens is a Nikon DX 18-105

Ok possibly the best photo add-on you can get spork and deviant called: FxIF

http://ted.mielczarek.org/code/mozilla/fxif/

basically install that with firefox, right-click on the photos go to properties and you can view the photo info,
eg the shutter speed on those photos ranged from 1/640s to 1/1600s

Went to Victoria (mainly Melbourne) on the weekend as my brother lives over there, got a few photos.

A lot of my photos had a lot of noise in them, is there some setting that I have changed, or does something else change the amount of noise that gets into a photo?

you haz my shoes!

the higher your ISO the higher your noise level will be,

if you are on manual your ISO will always stay the same. so this mean if you have an ISO of 100 it will stay 100

if you are using auto it may adjust depending on the light. if you are in low light the flash may pop up to compensate but auto no flash mode will just boost the ISO

this will cause more noise.

(p.s. foolio) thx for the software but mac OSX gives me all the camera info under 'get info'

D90 should look ok with anything under 800

Also, is there a setting so that if I was to focus on a certain distance/ object, the rest of the photo would be blurred?

Say I'm looking at a sign on a road, and I want the sign to be clear, but everything else out of focus?

I know by changing the aperture you focus on different.. distances or lengths, but is there a way to change the settings of what is not focused on?

Hopefully this is understandable.. :P

EDIT:

Ah, never mind.

There is no setting to change what is focused on.

the only thing that controls the depth in a photograph is your focal length (mm of lens) and your aperture size (F-Stop)

also i don't think you have quite the right understanding of what an aperture does, id suggest doing more research :P
