You can make an anvil in a metalsmiths forge. Then you can use that anvil to build a metalsmiths forge.

It's like an infinite loop, so you'll have to at least embark with an anvil, or get one from trade.


For trading, you'll have to build a Trade Depot outside, and assign a Broker through the nobles screen.
When a caravan turn up, wait till they have unloaded, then go to the Trade depot, press 'g' to bring up the goods screen to select which goods you want to trade, then 'r' to get your broker there, then 't' to trade.

Dwarf and Human caravans have lots of cool stuff. Elves have crap stuff.

Just had a long battle with a horde of Mandrills. I have no military, so my wardogs did all the work. There is blood everywhere, and one of my wardogs ripped the leg of a monkey.

If I knew how, I would promote him to Chief war dog.

I don't know how to get rid of blood.

There was blood outside from battle, both Dwarven and goblin blood, staying around for years.

So I flooded the whole area with water to wash it away.

But instead, it just spread the blood everywhere.

Now my previously white coloured fortress is now coloured blood red.

Well revenge is something worth losing ones head over.
That monster will never get ahead in life.
He will never be ahead of the pack.
The surviving dwarves will have to go ahead without their friend.
But they did cure the monsters splitting headache, but if they were that bad he should have migrained to the south!.
The dwarves probably made a joke about the monster, but it went over its heads.
At least the monster wont need haircuts anymore, especially in this economic crisis cutbacks are necessary, and the dwarves were offering a two for one deal!
I mean, the dwarves went head to head with the monster, and still came out as the head-honchos.
But the monster shouldnt have let it go to his head anyway.

I have some spare time at the moment and want to learn to play this game buuuuuut the website doesn't load for me. I think its a problem with TLC cable because I remember having this problem before and may be a DNS problem. Anyone know how fix?

Edit: Can get through on a proxy but a more permanent fix would be oarsome.

http://mayday.w.staszic.waw.pl/df.php has a download link with a already installed tileset that makes the game understandable. Annd i recommend tutorial investigating, You'll quit otherwise.

Anyways guys...

The Mandrills. The Giant, presumably blue, monkeys. It turns out that my wardogs did not kill all of them, while everyone waits for the wall around the entrance of the fortress to be built, A now-regrouped swarm of mandrills have returned, to cause havoc. I shall throw their corpse's into the newly made dumping hole. I am pleased.

Will edit post with results of battle!

edit : not end of battle yet, but holy shit. don't want to mess with these fuckers >.<

The results of the battle... Well half..maybe!

Whilst I thought there were more, it turns out there were only 2 that attacked us. While one, either the idiot, or the leader of the 2 lead the other mandrill towards us, He soon realised his mistake. The two attacked my wardogs, but my wardogs were brave and stood up to them (literally, I was given the message "The Wardog Stands up".)

With one slain, The wardogs go for the other. All the mandrill can do as it realises he is the last one left, is run like a bitch. The wardogs follow him to the designated walls of the fortress, and only manage to rip off his left toe, now laying on the ground. Right now i've paused the game, and am trying to work out how to send my two military members to kill the fleeing mandrill.

 I want him to suffer.

AND THE CHASE BEGINS!

He's dead. Seeing that instead of wardogs chasing him, he was only being followed by 2 small dwarfs, with only tiny helmets and fists at the ready, He turned around, and charged.

And then my dwarfs punched his SKULL through his BRAIN. Yes. THROUGH.

I feel so cool.

The more important dwarves get a magnificent statue in their rooms.

The current project is to build a massive wall around the map. I've made almost every dwarf a manson, and they spend their time hauling rocks up from the depths and building the wall.

Nothing will be able to get in our out, without passing through weapon traps.

That's what I like about this game.

I read that someone gets his Skull punched through his brain, or an axe in his chest tearing his spleen out. And then I imagine it happing in my head, and it's awesome.

Blood is bugged. If you inspect a dwarf they will be covered in blood vomit and pus. Cleaning doesn't work most of the time either. There are apps you can download that will scrub blood off floors. Check the bay12 forums.

It's funny, goblins roll up to my fortress. I hide my dwarves inside, make them cower behind close doors, while the goblins chase the poor animals all over the place.

A few of the animals get a goblin axe in there head, but they were going to be eaten anyway.
