Hey guys, I'm new to this forum, how do I pirate DVD's that I rent from the video store.

I use ImgBurn and it works great.

Looking at it doing a straight rip to avi. Does it do that rather than taking an image? <3

Use DVDdecrypter (or if you have access to linux, libdvdcss with copy disc to image), and then run the image through http://handbrake.fr

Avi is obsolete as a container, it doesn't handle newer codecs as well and has way too features for todays multimedia needs.

Handbrake contains into ogm, mkv (my special choice) and mp4, and it handles x264 and can add multiple audio tracks and subtitles if you need those features.

But it is rather slow.

It is still pretty fuck'n excellent though.

mmm. It's a fantastic tool, and most things that encode anything use it!

however the development on the mplayer project has slowed a great amount over the past few years to the point where it's sheer awesomeness has been encroached upon by other players (with cleaner codebase and apis too).

A sad day, I'm mplayer and xmms (original) diehard to the end, but... even I'm starting to question. They've dropped the GUI development all together too.

I found windows standalone versions of mplayer difficult and tempermental to use. I found VLC is a much more reliable standalone player despite it's quirks. I mostly stick with ffdshow now.

Mplayer was the first project to include ffdshow within it's binaries (largly negating the need for external codecs). VLC copied suit, but got a much more stable windows version out there quicker. As such, every twat now thinks they're the shizzle.

Originally VLC was just for receiving streams.

On linux (where both projects were born) the stability is vice versa.
Mplayer in windows has been quite stable for a long time... it's more the GUI that crashes. It's fantastic support for frontends has reduced that majorly... however now it seems to be the backend that crashes. *sigh*

smplayer is probably the best GUI project around.

Oh yeah no doubt mplayer/mencoder is pure awesomeness and legendary but not for the faint of heart. Learning is not the problem (though will probably find even that problematic), its remembering!!!

Oh yeah VLC does some conversions too. The advantage there is that libdvdcss is already there. Rii, try compiling VLC from, source you might find you get better performance.

Compiling XBMC is fun too.

Its mods, not admins, that can hide or edit things. In this case it was a tidy up of the posts with huge text which made the thread hard to read rather than because of any dislike of what was said.
