awesome, thx Zolthe questions are about media use of Cantabs over the last year: which media/communication methods worked or didn't, which ones they used to try & find out info about different things and other media/communication-y stuff. I've also got questions about length of time without power, location, emergency kit, transistor radio etc to see if some people/suburbs are more prepared these days. Mayor Bob reckons everyone's got an emergency kit now. I don't fink so... well, we don't (we're just lazy & we have most of that stuff around.... somewhere....)And there's a part2 which has opportunities for longer answers/rants etc :welcoming:I get the feeling there'll be heaps of this sort of stuff next year... I've applied for a couple of summer scholarships at UC, both are on EQ topics. I guess, if you can't beat 'em, study 'em! :playful:
So the word from an insider with an SIS contact is that they WERE Israeli spies and a whole lot more of that (training etc) goes on here than we realise.
There'll be a population boost once rebuild labour is imported. Also the CBD developed when Christchurch was much smaller. It's natural for peoples routine shopping and daily lives to be in clusters closer to where they live ( which also helps alleviate traffic issues). I hope the CBD does struggle to attract large corporations back, and stops being the Central Business District, and starts being the Central Living District, so we get a mix of inner city residential, culture, recreation and boutique businesses, that feed into the arts precinct and Hagley Park
With a history of flooding on the Canterbury Plains over the past 40,000 years, a sustainable future takes on a whole new meaning.Tsunamis are a threat, and it is only a matter of time before our shores are visited again by the monster waves. The sediments Christchurch is built on are generally less than 4000 years old. The history of flooding by both rivers and sea leaves us building our lives on a very dubious foundation.Maori learned this lesson the hard way about 1450AD and retreated from seaside and low-lying sites following a catastrophic tsunami.Another area of Maori wisdom was that the swamp that is Christchurch was never a place for them to live, rather a place to pass across. They viewed this swamp as just another food source. As one of the biggest natural swamps on the Canterbury Plains its future would have been better used for farming, such as occurred in early settlement.
A New Treaty ClaimI understand that for the first time ever, the Crown has filed a Treaty of Waitangi claim against an Iwi.The Government is claiming that Ngai Tahu sold them dud land in Christchurch and they want Ngai Tahi to buy the land back
