Yes, the State should cover everything. Infact, lets abolish insurance all together so citizens don't need to take any responsibility for themselves.

Why should the workers have to in effect pay themselves for the downtime due to the earthquake because some companies elected to not take out the appropriate cover?

Because it's an 'Act of God', so trundle down the road to the Cathedral and lay a class action against him/her.

You will find that the businesses will have insurance policies that cover them for acts of god for stock, fixtures, fittings etc - but unless you have income protection insurance (ask Xt) you are pretty fuxored.

wow dude, i'd agree with this stance if the financial difficulties these guys are facing were self inflicted but they weren't. Employers will get their insurance cover etc so in retrospect they will be fine - their employees however are going to get screwed on top of the hefty clean up bill each household faces.

DESPITE insurance or lack of, this isnt the time to be shaking ones finger to say fuck ya you get zip because you werent insured. its going to take weeks even months for this city to get back on its feet - do we really really want to add a bigger burden to those affected by taking such a harsh stance?

god forbid something happens to you buddy that isnt covered by insurance. i really do hope you wouldnt have to deal with people who share your current mentality - then again that may be a good thing, humility and empathy can and do go long a way

while i see your reasoning and your stance, i dont agree with it -obviously - it isnt about the $$$ its about getting 100,000 homes and families back up on their feet.

@fairy - for pretty much same $$ as you chuck in to Kiw-Shaver, you could have your own personal income protection insurance in place.

ok Spig I understand - trust me I understand. and agree to a certain extent.

here at work, we had a meeting about our staff in CHCH. Our employer obviously has insurance but due to the size of the disaster, it will take time to sort out, our office is closed for a couple of weeks.

we have all banded here and staff in auckland and wellington have all agreed to forfeit this months coming bonus to donate to our 5 staff down in christchurch WHO ALL HAVE FUCKING INSURANCE BUT WILL HAVE TO WAIT THE LENGTH OF TIME FOR INSURANCE TO AGREE TO THE CLAIMS LODGED AND PAYOUT.

my boss and my colleagues didnt have to do any of this - the office was insured, staff property was insured but we had enough sense to realise that all of these claims, re-building etc will take time to get sorted.

so 50 of us are forgoing our $600 (thats my holiday moolah for my trip to CHCH in Oct)bonus $30k to cover 5 people for a maximum period of 8 weeks which is how long we estimate for them to have some normality return in their lives - hurts us but not as much as our CHCH staff are.
