A magnitude 5.2 earthquake has struck the central Hawke's Bay near Waipukurau.

GNS Science reports a 3.6 quake hit first, just after 10am at a depth of 40km, near Waipawa.

The bigger quake hit 50km south-east of Waipukurau, 90km south of Hastings, at 10.48am.

Just read this; is this in relation to the CHCH quake? is it a sign of things to come? Is anyone here from Hawkes Bay?

doubtful. NZ experiences 10000s of quakes a year.

although, some geologists believe large quakes can cause existing faults to also pop off like a zip. but there is no evidence at this stage to support that occurring.

great thank you for that.

there are rumours flying round that this one in CHCH was just a tatse of whats to come - what are the possibilities of being hit with something even bigger than that?

Faults result from the accumulation and subsequent release of stress in the Earth's crust, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake (why the fuck do we even bother with the Richter scale nowadays is beyond me but anyway...) is a fairly major seismic event so I'm doubtful that any more major (e.g. 7+) events will follow.

...on that fault line for at least the foreseeable future...but it doesn't negate a large magnitude 'quake along the Alpine Fault.

Growler, how are your dogs? Ours are nervous wrecks, but at least the two spaniels run under the desk/bed whenever there is an aftershock.

I guess we shall see, maybe this quake released pressure on the Alpine Fault. I have my personal doubts about that idea though, there is too much movement unaccounted for along the Alpine Fault for my liking.

not sure if you CHCH'ers are aware:

Telecom has made payphones in and around CHCH free for local national and mobile calls.

Press says 'pre-school, primary, intermediate and secondary schools' in Chch, Selwyn, Kaiapoi districts .... your training provider makes their own decisions I think, based on building safety etc.

Present. I felt it from Hastings, even though I was stationary and on a 2nd floor I had to have it pointed out to me though. It was too small so not very fun; would have preferred it to be bigger tbh.
