I thought history had a pretty good record of showing there was normally a -1 mag aftershock for most major seismic events. Bath's Law & Gutenberg-Richter law both seem to agree.

As a palaeontologist I concur.
Yes, the media is saying that, but so are geoscientists and it is a possibility. There is loads of data still to process as well as dynamics to understand.
The geoscientists are being more reserved than the media but looking at their faces I can see the uncertainty and worry.

I would say just be as prepared as possible and live every day to the fullest

Hmmmm, you know what? This could be a very elaborate publicity stunt by Blizzard. The expansion for WoW coming out in December is about a dragon made of lava exploding out of the ground and tearing up half of the world, which is being preceded by earthquakes. Maybe they are planning to recreate this event in real life on the day the expansion goes live and a giant lava dragon will burst out of Christchurch and tear up New Zealand.
