It was too small so not very fun; would have preferred it to be bigger tbh.

bummer.... last I heard, Polytech was re-opening Thursday.
Staff are having meetings to try and rejig the schedule so we can cover everything in the time remaining... but 'cos I'm on contract & not permanent staff, my meetings etc only start tomorrow. Maybe by then most of the planning will have been done and we'll just have to figure out how to make it work ???

Small businesses shut down by the Canterbury earthquake will get wage subsidies of $350 a week per worker to pay employees under a package just announced by Prime Minister John Key and Social Development Minister Paula Bennett.

The package will be available to companies with fewer than 20 workers and will be backdated to the date of the earthquake. Ms Bennett said $15 million had been set aside at this stage to cover the payments.

Ms Bennett said it was aimed at protecting jobs and supporting small businesses which could not operate due to damage from the earthquake.

"This is a deliberately fast response because small businesses are particularly vulnerable at this time," she said.

The subsidy will be paid for up to four weeks initially and businesses can re-apply after four weeks if they are still unable to operate.

The main parts of the package are:
•  $350 per week gross wage subsidy
•  Advance lump sum paid to employer
•  Employer can 'top up' subsidy
•  Backdated to date of earthquake
•  Firms holding insurance cover for loss of earnings will be expected to use this before accessing the wage subsidy.

Ms Bennet said it was not yet known how many businesses and employees would need to take up the package.

Firms who can pay wages through their insurance will not have access to the fund.

"We’re very aware small businesses have been hit hard by this crisis and we are determined to help them get through the worst of it," says Ms Bennett.

Businesses can apply from this Thursday and will be paid within 24 hours.

Employers should call the Government earthquake helpline 0800 779997.

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake has struck the central Hawke's Bay near Waipukurau.

GNS Science reports a 3.6 quake hit first, just after 10am at a depth of 40km, near Waipawa.

The bigger quake hit 50km south-east of Waipukurau, 90km south of Hastings, at 10.48am.

Just read this; is this in relation to the CHCH quake? is it a sign of things to come? Is anyone here from Hawkes Bay?

Just bloody needy attention seeking from Hawkes Bay tbh.

Oh look Christchurch is getting all the attention. We can have earthquakes tooooo

We had one that I felt earlier today. It terrifies me when they happen because I am working on the 5th floor of an incredibly old concrete building that dances every time I sneeze.
