soooooooooo fucking confusing......

do I go sole trader for the jobs I am tendering on, or do I bite the bullet and fork out the cash to become a registered company.

I'd go full hog and register the company.

I'd second that... limited liability company offers more protection to the individual operator/owner than sole trader. It's been over a decade since I incorporated my company but it all made sense at the time. It doesn't cost that much and you can do it all online

@Matt: Awesome :D hopefully it fits though, not sure I got the right size o-o. Either way it still worked out pretty cheap, should buy more tee's online lol.

@Growler: Yeah I do BUT I mostly do individuals stuff like PTS's etc. This is a great place to start though if you're looking at new businesses: http://www.ird.govt.nz/images/flash/tfb/ helps you decide what kind of entity you are registering like partnership vs company etc

it depends growler. how much money do you make?  Benefits of of beign registered far outway the sole trader guy.  Theres nothign to it as well, i've had my company since 2003

the benefit of becoming a registered company is that people will take you more seriously.  You can ring up a supplier and say, well hey i need to set up an account. and ten hyou get trade pricing on materials etc etc which you will probably already gettign anyway.

If you are gst registered thats an extra benefit for bigger companies dealign iwth you because then they can write it off as expenses.

its not that hard to do or set up. Just go see a lawyer, or you can do it all yourself on the companies office website. I had a friend of mine do mine for free, all i had to do was just pay the fees to the companies office.

very simple. Only thing obviously is just have to do the GST returns ever two months, but thats no biggy because you'd charge the customer this cost obviously. Paye you'l;l have to do every month and send it in before teh 20th of each month if you have people under your employment. If you're the only employer and you made no money, just send in the return with 0 gross, 0 paye, etc etc  Then just get MYOB or what a friend to do your end of year financial accounts.

IRD are very helpful if you dont know how to do any of this.

theres no monthly fee, you dont have to do a minutes of meeting every year like a trust. Just BLAMO SET UP! allocate the amount of shares you want in the company, etc etc.

easy as bro, just do it :)

I'd recommend Xero before MYOB as well as Ace payroll. Xero + Ace = win

yer im using an old version of myob i got back in the day when i first started. It was ok to start, but the company is definitely out growing it.

moving to software now that has serial number storage etc when we're importing gear from overseas with better stock control. Especially when it comes to the hire side of things arrghh..

i mean if you were really disciplined you could do it all through exercise books even lol

edit: yer you can set it up as 1337 shares actually :D

Try xero out rice, pretty sure they allow trials, and can be set up for automatic account statement importing etc.

Anyone an Amazon pro?

I have only used it once before but I bought some headphones a few days ago from them and got a confirmation email on Tuesday saying my CC had been charged and the phones had been shipped (being shipped to in-laws in Seattle, fuck paying $45USD in shipping to get them to NZ).

Checked my account today and my CC still hasn't been charged.

Have I just scored free headpones or should I wait a bit longer before I celebrate?

Weird.

That is actually really shitty because in the back of my mind I am going to have to tell myself that $60NZD still has to come from my credit card when using it in the near future.

Email explicitly tells me that they have charged my credit card.

Silly Americans.

Nah, it's never been about image or fitting in...I probably could have got better for the price, but not immediately or as convenient and to be frank I have no problem with what I'm hearing.

However, good on you for having a passion and an informed opinion.
I realise not everyone appreciates the majesty that is Geology, just as there are people who can't be arsed with spending extra time/money on audio equipment when their needs are being met anyway.

TLDR?

I'm happy with my lot.

the JVC Gumys but really, you should bump it (the budget) up a bit tbh. They're light on bass + they're earbuds as opposed to in-ears.
Grim's always as been down with the kids :P Just admit it :P Reasoning's fine but we know ya down with the kids! ;)

if you didn't know, Grim's an awesome breakdancer.

well lets say I will probably only be paying 1-3 suppliers, and only be being paid by 1-3 clients.

I'm not going to need a suite like MYOB, nor do I want to pay $300/yr for something like xero.
