Wrap a belt or something with a slip knot around it, to give you a grip.

That's how they get oil filters off.

Or, looking at it a bit more closely, a bar across the top between the two notches should do it.

It looks like that's the preferred method

Why are you changing the method you've used in the past if this hasn't been used in c. twenty years?

Also, (* dons Health and Safety hat*) do you get MSDS forms with any of the chemicals you use (what are they, out of curiosity?)

Wood is better to use than a hammer if you need to hit it.

Do you have access to a vice clamp, or even a jar opener?

Is it a left- or right-handed thread?

Well, I bought some chlorine from the local pool store, and I didn't even think to tell the person at the store that we do not use the pool feeder to dose the pool with chemicals, so he sold us some stuff which can only be placed into the feeder, as it dissolves over time, instead of instantly, which is what happens to the stuff that we used to use. And also I gave the pool one dosage using the old method of just mixing the chlorine in a bucket and putting it in the pool that way, but as that isn't how to do it, the chlorine burnt out or something like that. (I don't really know what happened, but as soon as two days later the pool had 0% chlorine).

I do not believe that MSDS forms are necessary for home use, however if anybody else does come over my house with any possible intention of using my pool, I will make sure to show them any forms which I received with the chemicals which will show them what chemicals are in my pool, and I will require a doctor's certificate saying that every person who uses my pool is not allergic to, nor will they have any other bad reactions to anything related to my swimming pool. [noiwont]

The suggestion of a vice clamp is a very good idea, and while I do not have one, I might go out and purchase one, as I'm really not seeing how this is going to work otherwise. The feeder's lid is far too large for any jar opener to fit onto it. I've tried wearing some pretty tough rubber gardening gloves, and putting as much force into it as I can, but it feels like I'm going to break my shoulder before I get the lid off.

Thanks for the tip with the wood, I tried a rubber mallet, but that just seems to damage the rubber on the mallet, rather than loosening the lid.

It rotates in a clockwise direction to loosen it.

I've never actually seen the lid of the feeder off, and we have lived in this house for about 12 years I think, however I plan to ring my brother (who used to manage the pool when I was younger) tonight and ask him if he has ever taken it off, otherwise I'll either have to buy something to get the lid off, or I will have to just discard the chemicals which I bought and buy some which don't require the feeder.

I did? :P Gah, Ninja cat! 'This post is unavailable to rep, please contact an administrator if you have problems'..

That worked perfectly, I don't know why I didn't notice what those notches were for in the first place.

Thanks all for the help. :D

It's more for your personal safety if anything happens, plus it's a legal requirement for chemical suppliers (if you request it, or as best practice they provide it).

Still handy to know about

Pool is all dosed up, now to just wait for it to settle down and I no longer have to worry about all the shit that was appearing in my pool.

pulls? Is that how kiwis pronounce pills?

Yea, well I actually intend to use my pool afterward, so destroying the lid wouldn't really work too well, especially as this thing is like 20 years old, so probably not replaceable. :P

Pretty sure people still sell pool equipment m80

By the way - that's the filter. If you haven't opened it in a while it might need some attention/replacement.

The best thing about Finance Minister Bill English\'s latest Budget is that it does finally signal a much greater role for the private sector in the New Zealand economy. And another step along the way to extract this country from the political cul-de-sac in which Helen Clark\'s Labour Government parked us.

That's not the filter, well not the big one anyway, it just has a little hole / feeder in the bottom of it which feeds powder into the system over a certain amount of days. We have our pool checked by the local company once a year, just to make sure that everything is still working pretty well mechanically.
