After making my previous post, I jump over to the work machine next to me to discover that it's HDD (Seagate) now produces a lovely ticking sound when attempting to boot!

So who's considered good nowadays?

I've had more success in the past with WD than seagate. And I never thought WD was particularly great?

The ticking is probably just a miniature bomb planted in your HDD. I see no point actually checking though, you'll know it's a bomb when it explodes.

My soon to be Father-in-law has put me on to Hitachi.

So far so good. Running a 750GB SATA2.

From work the most failed hdd's were seagates followed closely by hitachi's. Western digitals very rarely failed.

I have had bad experiences with the WD external hard drives. The USB interface they use is brittle and doesn't stand up to small bangs and drops. I know you aren't *supposed* to drop them, but they are portable for a reason and the more you make use of that feature the higher the chance an accident will happen. Never had the actual drive fail on me though.
