Codex - if you get a chance, have look for 5th Gear from last week - they did an intersting test on 'premium petrols' - BP Regular (95) vs Shell V-Power (98) vs BP Ultimate (98) vs Esso (98) vs Asda (95).

General conclusion was that the extra cost wasn't worth it. The 98 BP ultimate only gave 1 extra HP over the BP 95. The V Power gave 4 or so additional HP over BP regular 95. But when you take a car from 200 to 204 the difference isn't really noticible.

In NZ our 91 is shite, so given the option opt for 95 prem over 98 prem.

Actually I grab it because it's cleaner and I get more k's out of it, around 40-60 more k's per tank o-o

Also use the 10cent vouchers or get 7 or so cents discount anyway through work so it's not much more than 95

Distance - wasn't measured. They only compared BHP (rolling road) for each fuel mix.

If your car normally takes 95 or is tuned to 95/98 then use 98 imo, otherwise if it's tuned to 91 you'll just be burning a lot a excess fuel

Yar, some cars are tuned to the 98 mix, better economy, more power(although your figures are intredasting Spig) etc etc.

Yeah, what codex said about cleaner. It's the clearner burn for more efficiency the engine loves, not the extra hp the octane rating gives.
Even if you have an older engine it's generally better.

octane has no relevance on power, unless it's tuned.

I run 91 in all my vehicles because they're not tuned to the point where pre-detonation is a risk, except my race bike which I run 98 in to reduce even the slightest chance of pre-det

Just whatever you do, make sure there's none of that techron shit in your tank.
Lest your engine suffer the consequences.

The tests & video would say otherwise. Same vehicle, same rolling road, different fuel - yeilded 4-5 bhp more than regular petrol.

That's the reason you put it in race cars, not every day drives that are 20+ years old.

Unless it's tuned.

The golf and the subie clearly had an ecu capable of advancing the ignition to take advantage of the higher octane, aka, tuning.

If you burned 1mL of 98 and 1mL of 91 you will get the same amount of energy given off.

Not that I would call their method scientific anyway.

i never run my small engines on 91, heard to many stories of methanol contamination so i just stick to 95,  100:1 synthetic mix for saws.  all our older work vehicles had to run on 95 but the newer stuff is back to 91 and the mileage has got noticeably worse.
