Dunno if this works for you, but what I did to get a better understanding of the Interviewing/hiring process was have a yarn with HR managers and employees at some big companies.

You'd be surprised how many are willing to chuck you some free advice if you sell your plight a bit. I found it really good to get some information from the hiring-party's perspective.

If you happen to know any industrial psychology graduates, that tends to help. The HR manager at my old work was really good, and because we had business relationships with large firms like PwC, Bell Gully etc (to the point where staff were seconded between us and them) I manage to get in a few good chats with a couple of other HR guys.

Coincendentally, I work a considerably shitter job now, but it's more fun. However, I did find good applications for the info I learned from HR folks.

I wasn't taken for the job, but looking back I really did seem out of my depth. I mean, I could have done the job, but it would have still been a reasonable learning curve for me too... which wasn't really what they were looking for.

Heh. What worked for me in the end was having my cover letter stand out. It was big, flashy, colourful and actually as far from a formal letter as one can get. It was bold, direct and extremely cocky. The opening line was somthing like "Stop looking, I can start immediately." It had photos and funky typography. And on the third page was a typical boring cover letter that never even earnt me a call back.

Confidence sells it at the end of the day.
Coincidentally I am now doing something I enjoy, and loving it. Great team, great job, great boss, great money. Good times!
