I love their consensus politics and the 'everyman' tales of coming up through the ranks of adversity and walking over people to get where they are today.

Of course, Spig, it's not that simple, though yes, I think if applied properly, Socialism is very cool.
Not all of National is 'evil'. It's a bit of a Curate's Egg.
I don't need another dollar. I'm aspirational, self-sufficient if need be and have empathy for my fellow beings, both human and non-human and from a lot of what I have observed, including personal conversations with Gerry, he doesn't appear empathic, is reasonably ill-informed and has more ego than Tofu!

Yes, it takes money to make money, but it's not like they drive around in diamond encrusted Astons waving at the peasants as they do donuts around the square. Seems to me, there is more green eyed monster than reason behind a lot of hate in NZ.

I think it depends very much on your concept of work.
Working to pay for the bills and groceries is very different to working when you already own serious assets.

Having been a fairly egalitarian country, we haven't seen the generational wealth and entitlement that is coming through at the moment. There will be some serious have and have nots shit happening in the future.

You could have a million dollar home, with a million dollar mortgage - yet are classified as being a 'rich' prick.

If you have no income to service any expenses you are fuxored, regardless of what assets you have.

Well, as much of a clichê as it is, I would imagine wealth would be measured on a scale of how long you could live maintaining your current standard of living, paying all living expenses after the point that all income ceases.

Willing to bet there are few to none of those people in this country.

because im quite a superficial kinda guy ill try and explain it, although i could be totally wrong and i dont endorse said judgments:

i know ride ons can come pretty cheap, but the assumption is the large property which necessarily needs a ride on becacause of its largeness is worth a large sum of money.

spigs earlier comment about million dollar properties and million dollar mortgages come into effect here, but of course i think the average judgementalist generally says 'if shit hit the fan and you sold everything tomorrow then you would come out with more pingers than the person with a more modest property/mortgage'. Based of course on the assumption that said million dollar property owner is earning income (ethically or otherwise, but that's a whole other judgmental kettle of fush) with which he can support million dollar mortgage.

All of this also really needs to take in the fact that throw a stone in any direction in certain parts of Auckland and you will hit a million dollar property these days, particularly in your neighborhood, but i think the dollar amount is really unimportant. which is ironic really isnt it.

but you are right spig, it is entirely about perception of who has more, which which is why D unit gets shit for having a ride on.

there is much more to your mortgage argument than those figures, there is income level, money made on top of the investment at sale time, and then quality of life as well which all come into peoples judgment of wealth. I also think people might consider it all to be a waste of money too.
knowledge on the other hand is a whole different kettle of fish. I think people tend to miss that one entirely when considering wealth.
