So I'm doing some thinking into what my options are for money when I get to the states (CC, cash, checks etc.)

Getting a debit card sounds like a good idea because it gives me access to my ordinary funds and the availability of using it where Visa is accepted. I read the small print and my anus puckers.

In addition, the rate of exchange shown on your statement for converting each overseas ATM withdrawal into New Zealand dollars includes a margin added by Visa International Service Association of 1% of the New Zealand dollar value of your withdrawal. So if I want to withdraw $1000 NZ cash which is very likely not only am I going to get charged BNZ's fee of $10 for an international withdrawal fee, but Visa is going to take a further $10 on top of that.

It also includes BNZ's Currency Conversion Fee of 1.25%. WHAT!? Visa is already charging a fee of 1% for the exchange and you are charging it again?

On top of this there is a yearly fee for just owning the card and other fees for your usual banking activities. So, for the simple process of withdrawing $1000, $32.50 is being hijacked. That's disgusting.
