We never bought her barbie or bratz or anything like that so for her it isnt where that came from - its a family thing  we did indulge her in her polly pocket phase
 

just buy them some tools - if they want jewellery, teach them to make there own

i mean how bad is it giving a child an angle grinder or an oxy/accetalene set to play with

 
she got her first tool kit when she was 6 months old made out of squishy stuffs, she's had a proper one for a couple of years.  shes spent her holidays pulling apart the old computers we have at home and is building herself a multi level dolls house.  so my spare room is covered in screws and wiring.  i think shes eyeing up some of the carpet.
