its sad, people are buying up big at the supermarket cause of GST increase. its 2.5% increase. its fuck all. if it is an issue, l2rebudget. put that third bag of chips back, you don't need it

only way GST is affecting me is that the super closes at 10 instead of 12 :(

you mean they are changing the countdown on riccarton rd to close earlier ?, or a different supermarket

I find it funny that all day the petrol stations have been grid locked by people desperate to get petrol to only save ~$5.

Also, I agree. This GST hike hype is fucking me off. It's a minimal rise and a lot of companies are actually absorbing the extra GST.

+ the fact ya actually better off due to income tax reductions.

woah, an extra $4.20 for a FULL 60L tank from empty...

Really.....

Let's try 31k p/year (below 1/2 of the median household income based on the 2007 NZ income survey by NZ stats).
Currently, that's $5320.
New tax system = $4445 = +875.
875 / 52 = $16.83 p/week extra.
26555 (31k - tax) / 52 weeks = $510.67 of TAXABLE income.
For me to negate the GST increase of 2.22% (NOT 2.5% as 1.15 / 1.125 = 1.0222) I'd have to spend $758.11 p/week to negate my extra cash in the hand to be absorbed by the GST rise
($16.83 / .0222 then rounded up to the next highest cent to surpass)

Ok, that's assuming a constant rise in prices. Let's try a 4% increase in daily costs (tbh, it'll be far less than this)

I'd have to still spend $429.75 p/week to negate this!
People having a cry are either ignorant and/or can't do basic math.

Your taxable income is in fact far less as well as mortgage payments and rent payments are not (central government) taxable.
Technically rents are taxable in the sense you are paying for the landlord's rates, but that's local government and not a direct tax like income tax or GST.

The best thing about Finance Minister Bill English\'s latest Budget is that it does finally signal a much greater role for the private sector in the New Zealand economy. And another step along the way to extract this country from the political cul-de-sac in which Helen Clark\'s Labour Government parked us.

it is 2.5%, it's a 2.5% increase from the base price of no GST.

most businesses run price + GST, all my quotes are per unit or sqm etc + GST, so yes, all of my final billing will be 2.5% higher.

eg, if you ring me and asked for a life size pic, i would tell you it would be $100 + GST. For your average consumer your have it right, but thats not where the government is making money from this.

Also I know a lot of people that are generally worse off because of the increase.

No it will be 2.222% higher. What was $112.50 will be $115.00. $115/112.5 = 1.02222

The rate that GST has/will be charged at has increased by 2.5 points, but net effect is only a 2.22% increase on prices.

Well put me down on the other side of the ledger, after the tax changes we get the tax cut 'north of $50' that was promised and that's after accounting for the extra $35 a month in GST cost for us (assuming all expenses rise by 2.22%).

it has no effect on prices spig.

I charge the client $100 + GST, my price hasn't changed by 2.2%, the GST has risen 2.5%.

They dont go 100 x 1.125 then x 1.022 now do they? They will now go 100 x 1.15 if they have half a brain....

I can't remember the last time within my industry that I quoted or received a quote inclusive of GST.

Yep - same here, prices for us are always ex-GST. A benefit of only selling to businesses, not retail.
