I remember going into an arcade to play this and wondering if the machine was broken because I dont remember the graphics being so hideous. Gameplay for the original game is still just as fun as it was back in the day. None of this 'million hit combo!!!' rubbish. Once you take about 8 hits you be dead. Literally.

Rant below.
Spoiler :
Quote from: Wikipedia
In 1995, the Daily News summed up the Mortal Kombat series like so, "The original Mortal Kombat video game debuted in 1992. Its combination of story line, character and mega-violence soon made it a hit worldwide. And the controversy engendered by its blood-gushing special effects only served to boost its popularity."

We used to line up to play the original (and II) to play that at the arcades, same way we used to line up to play SF2. Only difference was that the guy who stayed on the longest had murdered dozens of people in a spectacular way.
Quote
Mortal Kombat's commercials have also received some criticism. In the 1993 hearings on violent video games, Senator Joseph Lieberman criticized Sega for one of its TV commercials saying that the commercial promoted violence. The commercial, as described by Current Events, a Weekly Reader publication, "The TV commercial shows a boy gaining the respect of his friends after winning Mortal Kombat. At the end of the commercial, the boy angrily knocks over a tray of cookies given to him by friends now frightened by the boy's fighting ability. The boy roars, 'I said I wanted chocolate chip!'"

Moral outrage over video games (with the exception of 'Naughty Bear') has always pissed me off.
Quote
On November 22, 1997, 13-year-old Noah Wilson died when his friend Yancy stabbed him in the chest with a kitchen knife. The mother of Noah, Andrea Wilson, alleges that her son was stabbed to death because of his obsession with the Midway game Mortal Kombat. She alleges that Yancy S. was so obsessed with the game, that the child thought he was actually the character Cyrax. This character, Cyrax, used a finishing move in which the character grabs the opponent in a headlock and stabs the character's opponent in the chest. Wilson alleges that this is the maneuver in which Yancy S., killed her son.

Hey. News flash stupid mum: You and your son 'Yancy' (who calls their son 'Yancy'?!) are stupid, murderous, retards.
Quote
However, despite the character's other varieties of finishing moves, the character Cyrax does not actually perform this move at all.

back back forward punch - raidens combo... this is a combo i can remember non of this up down left right a b c ddd c left up down right bbb bullshit from dead or alive or any new styled fighting game.

how the fuck am i meant to remember a 30 button combo .. i barley remember breakfast.

as an adult, Project Manager and a contributor to society i have to try and remember enough without trying to remember a 200 page combo book per character just to play a game and have fun to wind down...  i guess this is why SWTOR and BF3 appeal at the moment - the lead you by the hand and tell you what to do .. or just say aim at moving thing push mouse button.

even SWTOR gets a bit complicated with all the combos of moves that add to each other .. i think i am just feeling mentally OLD today.

edit: RANT

i remember being about 17 when there was a story about some 5 year olds breaking another kids ribs copying moves from POWER RANGERS...  and there being a big hoo ha about violence on TV.... but what they failed to focus on was that the Father beat the mother as well and that the kids had been going to karate and thought well we will practice on our friend....

so really if you are violent natured your probably going on that killing spree with or without video games.  in fact the video games of you shooting people probably stopped you from actually doing it for a few more years because you vented by playing games.

God, I remember when MKII came out. There was one  chip shop in Hastings that had it, and i was a broken ass 13 (?) year old, so I'd just go after school and watch older kids play. The sprites and backgrounds were mind blowing.

You'd go to paper plus and buy (read) EGM2 and Gamepro just to maybe get a couple of Fatality Codes as they were discovered. Once I even resorted to MKII trading cards to get moves at like $7 per packet. Then you'd get a double up of Barakas blade swipe and throw your toys out of the cot.

I also played the original Unreal Tournament a LOT, Total Annihilation and finally, Freelancer, the biggest classic space game in history, has already been mentioned, so ups to you.

I forget about "The Incredible Machine" because we had to play that for computer class on the Apple IIe's. It was one of the educational suite of computer programs you had to learn how to use/run. I just assume that everyone had played it. Same with SimCity, which was also a computer class prerequisite program.

The size of Freelancer is no match for Elite, Elite Plus, and Elder Scrolls: Arena.

I do not understand this at all. Anyone who charges you money to get these games should be shot.

An interesting console released in Australia and New Zealand, this is a licensed version of the 1292 Advanced Programmable Video System made by Radofin in Europe in 1976.

I've owned at least three of these over the years, my latest acquisition being a boxed version in excellent working condition with a number of boxed games cartridges. Due to the need to free up some space I've sadly had to sell on my other two Fountain Force 2 consoles.

Holy crap, really?? I thought they were a world wide console! I never had one, but my friends did.

Those joysticks were impossible to use. Didnt it have some weird overlay thing for the buttons as well? There were 12 buttons, but different games used different buttons.

Yep. Basically like any other modern controller, except instead of having "A, B, C" it was just a 3x5 set of blank buttons. You put an insert that came with the game over it to label each button.
I think I still have it tucked away somewhere. My grandfather had it, NFI why... but I ended up with it I think. NFI where it is though :<

Games on it were pretty win. Except if you were playing something like pong. Then it was pretty much impossible. The joysticks have no centering device, and just stay at whatever angle you put them in. Getting it down so you can make minute movements is insanely difficult, lol. You tend to end up jamming a finger between the side of the joystick and the burm of the controller where it sat so you could use it as resistance to move the joystick with a bit more precision with your thumb, lol.

I just realised that Max Payne was made in 2001.

A brilliant game made even better by this:
