It's sad when something happens like this, but it also shows how important it is to have insurance. I don't blame them for not having it (It can be expensive), but people need to understand what not having insurance means.

If my house burnt it down it would suck, but really the only irrreplaceble thing I have is photos (and if I wanted I could have an offsite backup for all my photos). Everything else is just stuff I can just buy again (with the insurance money).

The Insurance companies should still do insurance for fire. I don't understand why insurance comapnies don't want to give people in Christchurch insurance anymore.

If you read the thread, you'd see they couldn't get insurance post the ChCh earthquakes - like a hell of a lot of people in ChCh at the moment.  That's why the fuck they didn't have insurance.

And your week was probably not as shit as theirs, given they a) couldn't get insurance and b) had their house and possessions destroyed by a fire that wasn't their fault.

Because then they'd have a lot of high-risk clients and would end up paying out more than they would be bringing in pushing premiums higher for everyone.

But isn't the only change to earthquake, landslide and flood damage risk?  They could at least offer insurance that includes fire risk (which must be one of the most common ways to lose a house).

B) If you actually read the story it is about two families.   Its the second ones (the Throsby's) who I have more sympathy for as they don't have a family farm and the mother was employed at the egg factory which was also burnt down.  No mention of them having let their policy lapse.
