Range is not really in issue in NZ. That battery has 600km range. Stop for 30min lunch, supercharge, you get a couple of extra hundred kms. On the ferry, supercharge and get extra kms. Full charge in garage overnight with a timer set to charge on off peak power at 11pm.

Power generation won't be an issue. This will be an exceptionally slow transition. As electric cars slowly filter to the second hand market and become more popular, combustion cars will get cheaper and cheaper thus slowing their demise.

Micro hybrid may be the popular option for the next short while, but if cars still contain internal combustion engines in another 50 years ill be very disappointed in humanities lack of sci-fi ness.

Was reading an article the other day about ranges of EV's and how cold weather can effect them (badly), let's see if I can dig it out.

Bugger me it was a Tesla.

If you swap electric for micro-hybrid in your above post, you're on track.

Full electric will be a fad, it's a niche, much like supercars.

Not everybody owns them because they're super expensive, aren't very practical, but those who do feel good about themselves.

I agree with Berg. 50 years from now cars will all be electric.

Why does a generator need premium petrol ? You are paying about 5% more for 98 over 91.

Also have a look at the review of the Vauxhaul Ampera (aka Holden Volt)

It takes 95.

And it's probably for the same reason normal cars need it.

95 isn't 5% more than than 91, is closer to 2% given the 2.18 and 2.22 price from my local.
Using what your engine is tuned to makes the price point negligible although 98 is a crock of shit pricewise imo.

I just bought a brand new VW Polo, 5.3L/100k avg, the little 1.2 turbo is throwing out 160nm @ 1500 rpm, pretty nippy.

You think petrol will last forever?

No but I think petrol will last longer than it'll take to magic up enough lithium and to find a viable power source, especially at proposed micro-hybrid rates.

In 50 years, yeah probably, but in the mean time it's more economically viable to develop a micro-hybrid, I think we're looking at two different time periods here...but I'll carry on with my explanation.

The car companies compare costs down to the ten thousandth cent because as you can imagine when you do a large production run those cents start adding up, so to throw away ICE altogether and start fresh on electric would cost a fortune per unit as exemplified above.

They're not even sure what format the batteries will take, Johnson Controls are pushing for a 48v lithium attached to a 12v lead acid (which I know more about than I can explain - hehe that feels so cool! - sorry new engineer) but that's more of a proof of concept.

I know all the tech blogs are yarning about EV, but they're a bit off the mark really.

I worked in the industry over summer which I realise doesn't make me all knowing, but just from what I've seen I think it'll go micro-hybrid long before it goes full EV.

I'll wait to see tiwanking necro this thread in 10 years time to validate but I suspect that in the near future we'll have more focus on hybrids running off biodiesel and ethanol blends.

That's awesome. Electric cars are the future.

However I'm sure fuel pumps are much faster then that, or that Audi has one humongous fuel tank.

Every 70 miles which also happens to be the distance between boost points for the hyperloop....oh and look there's an excess of power at those points which will need to go somewhere....oh look a fleet of cars which need charging....oh look a company specialising in PV panels to go on top of the hyperloop.

Mighty convenient that the tax payer pays for all of that....

Seriously awesome idea, Musk will be the worlds richest man if the US makes the logical decision to go with his design, which is never guaranteed in america.

Frankly he deserves to be the richest man.

The more billions we give to him, the more he has to revolutionise space travel.

And of course, if finish building his Iron suit which he will wear to fight villains and defend us from Thor's evil brother.

oil companies and other cars companies will be pissed - because Tesla is doing what each of the oil companies and car companies have always wanted - to make the cars and then own the stations that provide the fuel for their vehicles - own the whole supply chain

Well, Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee is convinced.

Quote
Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee says his scepticism about electric cars has all but disappeared after he took a spin along the Los Angeles coastal freeway in an electric sports car.

Quote from: Transport Minister Gerry Brownlee
I've been somewhat of a sceptic around electric vehicles. I don't want to say I'm a total convert but I've been incredibly impressed by the technology that I've seen.

When you've got a car that can perform to the sort of specifications that I saw at the Tesla factory you could just see that we're not too many years off there being quite a significant percentage of electric vehicles in our fleet.
