The announcement will be on the 22nd May.

Was a bit disappointed with the PS4, so hopefully the nextbox will be better.

I just hope they reject any claims of always on DRM.

What a dick move if they plan on not allowing people to on-sell games.

I'm still laughing at that guy from EB games NZ who was saying how sony and/or microsoft would never kill the 2nd hand game market

how the fuck did that twit get to upper management? he's probably the guy who decides when EB games is having a sale.

I'm excited.

I play mostly PC, but prefer driving games on console. And the Kinect is pretty fun.

haven't seen this comment, and surprised if one of our guys has been quoted somewhere but...

considering gamestop & specialist stores that rely on the preowned market sell something like 80% of all consoles sold....it's a valid comment.

new hardware drives customers to specialist stores like no ones business, today has been a great example of that, I had groups of people discussing the pro's & cons of both consoles with me all through today.

and because of that, both manufacturers WILL be coming up with a better solution for preowned rather than just locking it all down...which at the end of the day is pretty consumer hostile anyway.

back to the topic at hand, nothing here has lured me away from playstation for my console, and many of my customers....even the previous xbox fan boys, seem pretty disappointed to...but the proof will be at E3

We learned all about perpetuity and annuity the other day in engineering management and economics.

Basically it's the monetary value today of regularly being paid a sum of money regularly forever (annuity is for a fixed period of time so technically more applicable to this situation) lets say you're right and your company sells 80% of the consoles, what microsoft and sony will have done is compare that number to the amount they believe they will make by killing the pre-owned market (people forced to buy new - sure sales wont be 1:1) they'll have a bunch of scenarios and statistics and surveys and income profiles for various demographics of gamer customers.

If the annuity of killing pre-owned games is greater than the annuity of that 80% (which will just be dispersed amongst other retailers - so wont really be a loss) then I'd start talking about all ways on, games tied to account, steam style kill the pre-owned games market, and further I'd be looking for a new job. You should go to university! they teach you all sorts of neat things there like this.

awwe I'm sorry, I meant to be informative, not condescending.

crap now I'm sounding even more condescending....but seriously that's what they would have done, I think the pre owned market is about to take a hit, I reckon sony might hang back and see how the public takes this from microsoft (not well) before it solidifies on anything, it might even wait until microsoft has gone too far then introduce a swapping system.

And why wouldn't they? The game development industry is hardly known for it's good intentions and consideration for ethics in the pursuit of mega cash, it would kill off piracy too.

Here's what your boss said: http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/games/8322649/Sneak-peek-at-next-gen-Xbox-PlayStation
Quote
Marketing director of EB Games, Shane Stockwell, is not so sold on the rumours surrounding a second-hand lockout.

"If I was concerned by everything I read on the internet, I'd probably have lost my hair a long time ago," he told Fairfax Media.

"I've learnt to take it with a grain of salt. That's all rumour; there's nothing to say otherwise; I think it would be a strange move from two major corporations to cut off a business avenue in pre-owned games."

I guess EB could always move into retro-gaming.

Yeah I have a test for this shit on Tuesday, believe it or not but it's at the forefront of my mind at the moment.

So are ray tracers, PID controllers and embedded systems, I can tell you more than you want to read about PID controllers.

Anyway I've done my 15 hours today, time to go home and sleep till 7 then get up and do it all again tomorrow! later today!

ah yes, shane stockwell, he's from our Australian head office and is a very clued up guy, in charge of marketing for the entire Australasian region, which is run pretty independently of gamestop.

it mirrors what many are thinking, and reflects how much PO trades fund new game purchases, gamestop had a report out late last year that showed something in the region of 78% trade in's go toward new release, full price game purchases

Now that is an interesting stat, so they'd be effectively reducing sales by nearly 80% any ideas as to what demographic of gamer that is? even in your own experience?

Guys here at uni yesterday evening were saying they don't trade in cause it's not worth it, one guy got offered like $4 for a game you guys were selling for $35 (so he claimed)

I wonder how that 80% would compare to the increase in sales as a result of killing piracy.

core trading demographic is is 18 to 25 year old males for the most part....although that is growing older.

the example you quote there is pretty simple, but probably true, be interested to know the title, but probably something quite old, and something we have a lot of copies of, effectivly trade prices being set by what we WILL be selling it at in the future....not what we ARE selling it for at moment of trade.

the whole trade process I find pretty fascinating because it's pretty much fortune telling haha

best rule of thumb, first month of launch, trade it back and you'll get around half your money back...any longer than that and game quality, popularity and how many copies we hold becomes more of a factor. sports games dont hold their value, COD does

C'mon engineer, take another look at those figures. 80% of sales don't come from PO, 80% of what people get given for PO games gets re-spent on new titles. Ghost didnt mention the proportion of the total new game sales that come from PO trades just the proportion of trade in being respent in store.

Interesting.

Also this popped up on reddit too

WHAT THE FUCK?!?! a print out of a photo of you, and a half meter of nichrome wire attached to a watch battery would be enough to fool this machine, as for the claims that it would cross reference your social media, don't give it your facebook details! FUCK! The even more obvious solution is to just buy a PS4.....or a PC....

This whole pre-owned game scenario is fucking me off.

The software/game industry is the only industry I can think of, that after you pay full price for the product, the creators still have the audacity to tell you, you don't own it and want in on more profit when the game is sold on.

That enrages me.

You don't own the software you own the licence to run the software, if you actually owned it they would be giving you the source code.

This is the EB website right now:

I'd want to know the price of it as well before pre-ordering.
